1 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH 7100 Harvard Hills Rd. P.O. Box 846 Harvard, IL Church MAY 2017 Jeff s Thots on Living The Faith This prayer came to my attention during the very difficult months when Joyce was first diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. I originally read it in a book by Max Cleland. Max was the head administrator of the Veterans Administration. He was a Vietnam Veteran who had lost both his legs during the war. His book is titled Strong in the Broken Places. And refers to how a broken bone is actually stronger in the place where it has been broken. The Prayer of an Unknown Confederate Soldier I asked God for strength that I might achieve I was made weak that I might learn to humbly obey I asked for health that I might do greater things I was given infirmity that I might do better things I asked God for riches that I might be happy I was given poverty that I might be wise I asked God for power that I might have the praise of men I was given weakness hat I might know the need for God I asked for all things that I might enjoy life I was given life that I might enjoy all things I got nothing I asked for but everything I hoped for Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered I am among all men, most richly blessed. My prayer is that this prayer will continue to give you strength and insight into how God continues to make all things work together for good in you life. Now to some things you might be wondering about.. Beginning May 21st Claire Brennecka will be leading worship and visiting those in the hospital. She will be filling in while the search goes on for an interim pastor. Donna Ingram is the chairperson of the search committee. This Summer there will be a series of meeting to develop a mission statement for the Harvard church. This is a very important process toward calling a new permanent pastor. The steering committee has been appointed and their first meeting with be June 5th. Thanks to many people who are making plans for the future, everything for the transitions that could be done before my retirement is complete. Many, many good things have happened in the 28 years I have been your pastor. I look forward to hearing about the new adventures of the church I have loved all these years. Shalom, Jeff

You can help the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago by saving the little tabs you pull to open soda, soup, or other aluminum cans. The funds generated from recycling these aluminum gems help offset the House s expenses. McHenry County s Home Community Education Association which is part of the University of Illinois Extension has been collecting pop tabs for many years. Last year they delivered over 72# to the Ronald McDonald House in Chicago. You can help by bringing your tabs to the church and placing them in the box by the door of the work room. Thank you, Florence Spesard KITCHEN INSPECTOR for the month of MAY Is Midge Roach A kitchen inspector s job is to check the kitchen and the parlor once a week during your month.
