3 ST MARY COUNCIL 6993 GRAND KNIGHTS Arthur Sitzberger Anthony Slusarski Lester Hochhalter Harry Jones Stephen Sitzberger Ned George Herbert Gramse Richard Mansell Jr Clifford Janeliunas Paul Scehovic Clifford Janeliunas Daniel Michalak Gregory Quinn Timothy Cosgrove John Hoffman Guy Mikulich Joost Sluis 2007 ** Joseph Doyle Peter Baker James Peppmuller Donald Bauc ** Sir Grand Knight Joseph Doyle died in office on Decem- ber 19, Peter Baker was elected to finish Joseph Doyle s term in January ST FRANCIS OF THE WOODS COUNCIL 6993 Knights of Columbus Council 6993 was chartered on October 30, The council was not associated with a particular town or parish and meetings were not always held at St Mary in Mokena as they are now. In 1977 there were no councils in New Lenox, Frankfort or Homer Glen. The council took the name St Francis of the Woods, had members from New Lenox, Frankfort, Mokena and surrounding lands, and had a close relationship with the Sisters at the mother house on St Francis Road. The annual Nun s Bingo began at that time when retired sisters still lived in an old girl s high school that has since been torn down. The council in Frankfort split from Council 6993 in the mid nineteen eighties. The council in New Lenox was formed in the early nineteen nineties. Both councils were started by members of council The council in Homer Glen is much newer and does not owe its parentage to our council. With the creation of new councils in Frankfort and New Lenox, as well as another, now defunct, council that was located at the St Francis of the Woods mother house for a while, Council 6993 became centered on just the St Mary Parish in Mokena. The council name was subsequently changed to St Mary Council. Our council has been a powerful force for good in the church and community. The council has paid for improvements such as the range hood system in the Burnett Hall kitchen as well as many smaller items such as new faucets and the grill in Burnett Hall. The Frankfort Township Food Pantry has been given very strong financial support and the annual Tootsie Roll fund drive has raised thousands of dollars every year for the intellectually impaired. We annually raise money to support seminarians. The council provides all the American Flags for the classrooms of St Mary School. The kids of Mokena eat candy we throw out every year on the Fourth of July. The list is long. The council is recognized as very successful. St Mary Council 6993 will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year on October 30. At the movie showing on Monday October 29 that is sponsored by the knights with the Parish and the CCW, a cake cutting ceremony will commemorate our anniversary. Come and join Grand Knight Don Bauc for the birthday celebration! Viva Cristo Rey

5 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ORGANIZATION The chart above shows the organizational structure of the Joliet Diocese Knights of Columbus. A Chapter is a local organization of councils that have joined together to support the work of the order. Our Chapter embraces the whole Joliet Diocese. All knights in the diocese are voting members and can attend meetings. Founded in 1882, the Knights of Columbus is a worldwide organization of over 1.8 million members in over 14,000 Councils world wide. The Knights of Columbus are headed by a Supreme Knight. Each state or territory has a State Deputy with a staff of officers. The State Deputy has assistants called District Deputies who each oversee a group of councils to ensure that they remain aligned with the rules and standards of the order. The Joliet Diocese has about seventy councils. Each council has a group of elected and appointed officers headed by a Grand Knight. The highest degree of initiation is the Third Degree of the order and all elected officers must be fully initiated by being Third Degree Knights. Third Degree knights do not wear a formal uniform. In 1900 the order created a patriotic degree that would publicly represent the knights in uniform. Members of the patriotic degree are exemplified (initiated) into an Assembly of Fourth Degree Knights. Any Third Degree Knight can join the fourth degree after six months membership. Being a fourth degree knight is not a higher status that that of a third degree knight but denotes membership in the Patriotic Degree. Fourth Degree knights have the title Sir Knight. The fourth degree has its own complete organizational structure that starts at the top with a Supreme Master, who is on the staff of the Supreme Knight, a Vice Supreme Master who is in charge of a geographic area called a Province, and a Master who is in charge of a group of Assemblies in his District. Council 6993 in Mokena has members in the Joliet Assembly, which is in the Northern Illinois District and the Marquette Province that includes Illinois, Michigan and Wisconsin.. Joliet Assembly Sir Knights are members of thirteen councils from Morris to Mokena and Wilmington to Lemont. The elected officers of an assembly are headed by the president who is called the Faithful Navigator. There are presently about 330,000 Fourth Degree knights in over 3,000 Assemblies worldwide. Fourth Degree knights wear the regalia that identifies the order. Fourth Degree Assemblies draw their members from a group of councils. The territory represented by an Assembly is more or less random. Assemblies headquartered in the Joliet Diocese are McNamara Assembly 202 in Bourbonnais, Joliet Assembly 204 in Joliet, Dooley Assembly 209 in Bolingbrook, Bishop Blanchette Assembly 3044 in Bolingbrook, Divine Mercy Assembly 3197 in Loda and Bishop Roger Kaffer Assembly 3232 in Crest Hill. Knights from councils on the periphery of the Joliet Diocese belong to Assemblies such as Cardinal Stritch, O Callahan and others that are not headquartered in the Joliet Diocese.

6 The Vocations Raffle Last month every person on our membership roster was sent a raffle book for the annual vocations raffle. If you missed opening the envelope, please look for it or call Joe Sluis at (815) for another book. The raffle is a state wide fund raiser for Seminarians. Our council keeps $9 from each book sold for our vocations fund and the state vocations fund gets the rest of the money raised. BUY THE BOOK! The booklets cost $15 each. When you fill out the booklet, don t take it apart and make sure that the front cover remains attached. Fill out each stub and mail the booklet so it will be received before Novermber 22 to: Joost Sluis St. Vincent Ct. Mokena, IL If the booklet with check is received after Thanksgiving Day all the money you send in will be retained by the council too late. THE FOURTH DEGREE On page 5 of this newsletter there is a discussion about the organization of the Knights of Columbus that explains the Fourth Degree. The Joliet Assembly invites all knights to join in the wonderful work of representing the Knights of Columbus in public with the regalia of the Patriotic Degree of the order. Consider becoming a Sir Knight of the Assembly! To join the Fourth Degree you only need to have completed your First Degree six months before joining and must complete the Third Degree as late as the day before joining. The next exemplification of new Fourth Degree knights will be on February 9, The Joliet Assembly will hold an open house on Monday night December 3 at the meeting hall of Council 4400 in Joliet. The event will feature a free meal for non members of the Assembly and a lot of information. All knights are invited to attend. Plan now!! The March for Life Bishop Conlon will once again lead a large group of Joliet Catholics to Washington DC in order to pray on the steps of the Supreme Court along with 300,000 or more Christians from all denominations to pray for an end to the child murder of abortion. Some of the Joliet Knights going on the trip with their wives are making the pilgrimage for the fourth or fifth time. Join them! The March consists of a bus trip to the Washington DC area that starts on Wednesday January 23 from St Charles Boromeo and returns on Sunday January 27. It is a wonderful experience for all who participate! The bus ride is very well managed and the meals and accommodations work well. All come home tired and happy. Join the Bishop! Call Mary Scholp at the Life Office at (815) or mscholp@dioceseofjoliet.org. The last day to sign up is Nov. 2. PROTECTING GOD S CHILDREN Almost all Catholics have an opinion about the Priest Scandals that have rocked the Church. What most don t realize is that the incidence of identified abuse of children by priests is extremely low when compared with such activities by school teachers and others. The Church is a convenient target for those who hate us. School teachers can hide behind the sovereign immunity that protects government from law suits. It had been a terrible trial for our Church. In order to prevent abuse of children in the Church, however rare, the Bishops have instituted a program called Protecting God s Children that provides for a background check and training for all Catholic men and women who will deal with children in conjunction with Church activities. The training is required for all of us before we can participate in events with kids. If you have not attended a training session, contact Mary Fran Consola at the Parish office ( ). The next training session will be on November 8 at 7:00 PM for those who have registered.

7 The Joliet Assembly will provide a Fourth Degree Honor Guard
