1 KNIGHTLY NEWS Saint Maximilian Kolbe Council No Pismo Beach, CA District 52 Division 111 MAY 2015 VOLUME 22, NUMBER 3 Grand Knight Message Brothers, First of all, I would like to thank all of you who made this year s Spring Fling such a wonderful success. We had great participation and actually made a profit! It is a little early but I am estimating we made somewhere in the neighborhood of $3,000. All of these dollars will in turn be donated to the local charities we support. Very special thanks to Brothers Benevedo, Huck and Nunez and their volunteers who made this event very successful. Speaking of events our next project will be the Mother s Day breakfast. We will be serving a complete breakfast at no cost to all the mothers of the Parish. The Breakfast will be served following the 8 and 10:30 Masses on Mother s Day, May 10th. We will need all of you that can to be there beginning at about 7am. This is a great service project honoring our mothers. Dan Beck is coordinating this event. I just want you to know that we are currently taking jacket orders for our Council. The total cost is $85.00 includes all embroidery ($75.00 for jacket & $10.00 for the back emblem). Wearing the jacket really helps letting others know who we are when we are serving. So please consider buying a jacket. Please contact either Brother Frank Mackie or me if you are interested, If you haven t had the opportunity to look at this month s Columbia Magazine I would suggest you do so and read the articles about Father Junipero Serra. Blessed Father Serra will be canonized later this year when Pope Francis visits the Unities States. Father Serra was the first great California evangelist and a pioneer whose life qualities are worth emulating to the degree we can. Please keep Blessed Father Serra in our thoughts and prayers as this future Saint s honored day approaches. The councils are beginning the process for nominations and the ultimate election of officers to the new Columbian year. This is very important to each council; it is the future for your council. I urge each member to consider being an officer in your council. It is your opportunity to lead and participate in the workings of your councils. Current officers should consider other positions including those within your council, the chapter level or even a role at the state level. 2 SPRING FLING: A HUGE THANK YOU to all who participated in our annual fundraiser. A special appreciation to the brothers (and families) who sold tickets, prepared the hall and meal, those who served and smiled, and helped with the clean up (a few less smiles!). CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE At the last business meeting, Father Alphonse spoke about the 9 ways of Cooperating in Sin. We also had a reminder that Divine Mercy exceeds Justice. REMINDER TO JOIN US ON MAY 20: Rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m. before General Assembly Meetings. Scholarship drive raffle tickets are on sale for $1.00/ticket. 1st & 2nd prize will be ¼ beef (cut & wrapped), 3rd prize will be a trailer full of Red Oak wood (cut for BBQ) and 4th prize will be $100 grocery gift certificate. See any local Knight for tickets. Sales will continue until August 9th and announced at the Knights of Columbus Parish Picnic. Blessed Junipero Serra is the feature article with his image on the cover. He will be canonized during the Papal visit to the United States in September. Blessed Serra is known as the Apostle to California and spent the last 15 years of his life in the Golden State including Indeed, his travels took him through today s central coast including Pismo Beach. If you look closely, you might even see him journeying along the beachfront. Our Chapter is the Junipero Serra for good reason as the soon-to-be saint made his headquarters at Carmel where his remains rest beneath the altar. The Chapter is distributing intercessory prayer cards. Be sure to get one! While in California over one hundred years before the founding of the Knights of Columbus, you know he would have been a very active member.

3 Honor Flight honors our veterans who served in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam by flying them to see the memorials built in their honor in Washington, DC. We will be sponsoring a veteran. 5 KNIGHTS IN ACTION Every month, Columbia magazine features about 50 different Council activities...both large and not-so-large. Yet, each reminds us that we are brothers without borders and committed to helping everyone. Here are just a few: St. Augustine Council (Des Moines, Iowa) Knights pulled a 122,000 pound 727 jet competing against 35 other teams to raise $100,000 for Special Olympics. Salt Lake City Council 602 donated $3500 for a new range for their church. St. Vincent de Paul Council 5012 (Encinitas, CA) donated funds to establish a pro-life website Your Life Begins at Conception. In Mililani, Hawaii, St. John, Apostle and Evangelist Council 14663, Knights climbed onto the roof of a monastery to clean years of debris from the gutters before flushing the drainage. Yavapai Council 1032 (Prescott, AZ) donated ten wheelchairs to veterans and St. Susanna Council (Mason, Ohio) built a ramp at the home for a girl with disabilities. St. Catherine Laboure Council (Harrisburg, PA) built a ramp for their 101-year old priest to safely leave the rectory to celebrate Mass. There will be no more sunrises, no minutes, hours or days. All the things you collected, whether treasured or forgotten will pass to someone else. Your wealth, fame and temporal power will shrivel to irrelevance. It will not matter what you owned or what you were owed. Your grudges, resentments, frustrations and jealousies will finally disappear. So too, your hopes, ambitions, plans and to-do lists will expire. The wins and losses that once seemed so important will fade away. It won t matter where you came from or what side of the tracks you lived on at the end. It won t matter whether you were beautiful or brilliant. Even your gender and skin color will be irrelevant.
