Just drop by to chat for a spell and catch the energy of this group. Our recent projects were granny square blankets for First Light and Angels for the Salvation Army s Christmas Village booth. Blankets for the new home ladies Angels made for Salvation Army exists to glorify God, make disciples, and meet needs through acts of love and hospitality Leeds Outreach: Our buckets are mostly empty and crying for food items. W on t you help? We can help by bringing all kinds of canned food items, dried beans/peas, peanut butter, jelly, oil, flour, cornmeal, sugar, detergents, soap, and paper products. Your local food pantry continues to need your donations of non-perishable food items to help fill their shelves. Cents-ability - Let s keep the effort going - coins, checks, cash, all accepted. The offering is received on the second Sunday of each month. Mark your check for Cents-ability. Thank you for prayerfully considering our mission here at LPC, that our choices are wise and enable a generous spirit. News - Doris Jarvis The average Sunday attendance for September was 32. Communion was served on September 11. Let me introduce you to LPC s new choir member, Amelia Long. Amelia and George Buddy joined the church on June 12, It s better late than never, so welcome to the choir Amelia. Thank you to Ron, Spurgeon, Joan and William for many hours of practice to provide music for our worship service. Thank you to our supply pastors, Banyon Allison and Terry Tingle, for filling the pulpit on September 18 and 25. Tell me how you would like to volunteer at LPC! Our congregation is asked to pray corporately for the future of our ministerial leadership search. In the next few months, if you have a need or concern, please call on your shepherding elder or one of the other elders. I will not leave you comfortless. I will come to you. John 14:1 Community News ~ Following communion service on October 9, 2016 If you wish to provide a goodie please let Doris Jarvis or Emily Hodges know. Stated Session will meet immediately following our fellowship. Reverend Richard Hanna will be our moderator. 3 Elder Carolyn Jarrett Mary Anne Moseley Bud & Amelia Long Jerry & Patricia Partridge William Peek Charles Gabert Encore Musical memories will be presented at the Leeds Theatre and Arts Center on Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 for a show of music from Leeds Arts Council s past musicals and a few more. The Leeds Arts Council presents it Fall Mystery Theatre Bloody Murder on Oct 14, 15 and 21 and 22 at 7 p.m. and Oct 16 and 23 at 2 p.m. Ticket price to be announced. On Thursday, October 27, the Leeds Area Open Circle Poets and the Leeds Arts Council will host the quarterly meeting of the Birmingham Arts Journal. This meeting will be held at the Leeds Theatre and Arts Center at 6:30 p.m. Many Birmingham and local poets will read their works that are published in the Arts Journal. This is a free program. Come and enjoy some of the best stories and poems.
4 RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ELDERS Your Nominating Committee asks that the congregation submit names for consideration of Elder. Some of the qualifications to be considered in nominating an individual are CHURCH INVOLVEMENT (regular attendance at worship, regular participation in church activities, stewardship), PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND SKILLS (cooperativeness, good judgment, willingness to learn and follow through on assignments and readiness to listen); and CHRISTIAN LIVING IN DAILY LIFE (faith, dedication and commitment). Three (3) elders will be elected by the congregation for the Class of 2018 and one (1) elder for the Class of The committee also seeks recommendations for three members-at-large from the congregation to serve on the 2017 Nominating Committee. Please submit this form by October 23. You may place it in the offering plate or give it to any member of the Nominating Committee (Doris Jarvis, Chair; Wynton Hodges, Morgan Knight, or Patricia Partridge) Session Notes We will celebrate Holy Communion each second Sunday during morning worship. Leeds Presbyterian Church To: 2016 Nominating Committee: I would like to recommend to be considered an Elder. I think this person would make a good Elder because: The next Stated Session meeting will be on Sunday, October 9, immediately following the fellowship coffee. I would like to recommend as a member-at-large from the congregation to serve on the 2017 Nominating Committee. Signature Date ALL RECOMMENDATIONS WILL BE REVIEWED AFTER PRAYERFUL CONSIDERATION; A SLATE WILL BE SELECTED BY THE 2016 NOMINATING COMMITTEE. THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE WILL ASK THE SELECTED SLATE IF THEY ARE WILLING TO SERVE. AT A CON- GREGATIONAL MEETING, THE CONGREGATION WILL VOTE ON THE RECOMMENDATION OF THE 2016 NOMINATING COMMITTEE. ADDITIONAL NOMINATIONS MAY BE MADE FROM THE FLOOR AT THAT TIME PROVIDED THE PERSON NOMINATED HAS BEEN CONTACTED AND HAS AGREED TO SERVE IF ELECTED. Nominations are being accepted for the 2018 Class of Elders (3 members) and Class of 2017 (one member) and the 2017 Nominating Committee (3 members). 5 LPC looses long-time member Phoebe Scott Dorrough ( ) Mar. 2, 1913 ~ Sept. 10, 2016 age 103, of Birmingham, AL, died September 10, She was born March 2, 1913 and raised in Leeds where she faithfully served in numerous civic capacities during her husband Dr. Bill Dorrough's 14 years as Mayor. She was predeceased by her parents Effie and William Scott, her husband Dr. Bill Dorrough, daughter Phoebe Roberson and sons Billey and Scotty Dorrough. She is survived by her granddaughters Leigh Anne Robertson, Julie Zaharis, Shellie Smith and Nancy Roberson, great-granddaughters Elizabeth Robertson, Madeline Bryan, Mary Austin Head and Jane Head and greatgrandson Matthew Bryan, daughter-in-law Anne Dorrough, nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. A graveside burial service was held Friday, September 16th at 10:00 AM in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Leeds, immediately followed by a memorial service and reception at Kirkwood by the River Chapel, 3605 Ratliff Road, Birmingham. Memorials may be made to Leeds Presbyterian Church, PO Box 98, Leeds, AL Prayer Concerns Congregation and Friends Prayer Concerns: Alice Lewis (Emily Hodges sister), The Family of Phoebe Dorrough, Paula Haynes (wife of Ernie Haynes), Pat Harkins (Spurgeon Marchant s niece), George Huffman, Emily Hodges, Hubert Strong, (Spurgeon Marchant s brother-in-law), and our missionaries and their families in the world s areas of conflict and war.
