Origins of Father s Day The nation s first Father s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, in the state of Washington. However, it was not until years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother s Day official that the day honoring fathers became a

2 nationwide holiday in the United States. This year Father s Day 2018 occurs on Sunday, June 17 the second Sunday in June. On July 5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation s first event explicitly in honor of fathers, a Sunday sermon in memory of the 362 men who had died in the previous December s explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company mines in Monongah, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday. The next year, a Spokane, Washington, woman named Sonora Smart Dodd, one of six children raised by a widower, tried to establish an official equivalent to Mother s Day for male parents. She went to local churches, the YMCA, shopkeepers and government officials to drum up support for her idea, and she was successful: Washington State celebrated the nation s first statewide Father s Day on June 19, In 1972, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation making Father s Day a federal holiday at last. Today, economists estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on Father s Day gifts. Pastoral Care for St. John s and St. Paul s Call or text and reach Pastor Joel Schroeder, Pastor Nicki McIntyre and Vicar Bob Ball all with one number. 7 FALP News May 27th FALP call process update The Rev. Juliet Hampton met with the Redeemer church council on May 16th for an exit interview with Pastor Joel. Following that, she met with the Faith Ambassadors council for another exit interview with Pastor Joel. Questions that were discussed included: -What has gone well in your ministry time together? -What do you wish you could have spent more time or effort on or what do you wish you could ve done differently? -What is your greatest hope for what is next for the ministry in this place? The FALP council will meet with Rev. Juliet on June 13th at Ridgeley to take the next step in the call process. This meeting will involve more discussion about where we, as a parish, see as our focus going forward, and what our options are as we search for someone to help lead us in that focus direction. Pastor Joel will lead his last worship services at Faith Ambassadors congregations in June. We are working on pulpit supply/worship leaders for the months of July and August. Once again we ask for your prayers and your patience as we go forward with our Spirit-led ministry of celebrating cooperation, participation, faithful fellowship, creative service, and outreach to all people. The FALP covenant which was approved by all five congregations outlined the steps our parish will follow: VI. CALL PROCESS A. The Parish Council designates a Call Committee made up of members from Parish congregations. B. The Call Committee (following guidance of the Nebraska Synod ELCA Bishop) interview and make recommendation of a pastoral candidate to the Parish Council. C. The Parish Council will then present the candidate to each of the active congregations to approve or disapprove based upon the individual congregation s bylaws/constitution. D. Following each congregation vote elected representatives on the Parish Council will bring their congregation s vote 7

8 to the Parish Council to report the congregation vote. Representatives are bound by the congregational vote. E. The representatives vote will be weighted according to the congregation s Communing, Contributing, Confirmed (CCC) established for the current year. F. Approval of the candidate will be on a 2/3rds vote of the Parish Council, weighted according to the current yearly assessment formula. The FALP council continues to ask for your prayers, especially now as we enter this transition period. *+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+*+* Faith Ambassadors Parish Congregations REDEEMER HOOPER 601 East Fulton Hooper, NE Church Office ST.
