1 Volume 20, Issue 11 Novemberr 2018 Community Thanksgiving Dinner C H I N O U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H The Tidings It s that time of the year and Thanksgiving is almost upon us. It s hard to believe that this will be our twelfth Community Thanksgiving Dinner. We have a great bunch of people on the organizing committee, but we can use as much help as we can get. Our brothers and sisters at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church are going to be with us again, as well as our friends at Potter s House. Our clothing drive is proceeding at an unbelievable pace. So much so, in fact, that Marilyn Mack, Rachel Houseberg, and the rest of their crew started sorting early, or they would have been swamped by Thanksgiving. We will take any new or slightly used clothing. This can be either dropped off at the church - in the food pantry - or let us know and we will make arrangements to pick it up. While any financial donations will be greatly appreciated, we are focusing on food items: 1. Turkeys, cooked or frozen. Frozen turkeys should be at the church by the Saturday or Sunday before Thanksgiving 2. No. 10 can of Green beans or Corn 3. Stuffing mix 4. Powdered mashed potatoes 5. Cranberry sauce 6. Dinner rolls 7. Gravy mix 8. Pies of any type, cooked or frozen. If you would like to donate a frozen pie, these should be at the church no later than the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. And in case, I haven t already done so. I would like to personally thank everyone for their continued prayers for this important church ministry. 2 Women Of Chino United Methodist Church - You Are Invited! United Methodist Women (UMW) is a mission organization dedicated to serving women and children here around the world. Our unit, Chino UMW, is inviting you to join us on Sunday, November 11, at 9:00 a.m. in the Parlor to discuss how we want our unit to proceed in this mission. We look forward to seeing you there. All-Church Thanksgiving Dinner Adult/Family Ministries would like to invite you to our yearly All- Church Thanksgiving Dinner on Sunday, November 18, right after church in the Social Hall. All you have to do is bring your own table service and a dish to share. In addition, we will be needing about 6 dishes of mashed potatoes/gravy, 6 dishes of dressing and 6 turkeys. We have a sign-up sheet posted on the Adult/Family Bulletin Board for this purpose. Note: You may cook/carve your turkey at home OR you can bring your turkey to the church by 7 a.m. on the 18th and it will be cooked in the church oven that morning. See ya there, Adult/Family Ministries Holiday Mood Setter Potluck Dec. 2 For a number of years our United Methodist Women (UMW) has hosted the holiday Mood Setter on the first Sunday of December. Delicious holiday goodies and lovely Christmas decorations have encouraged us to celebrate the Christmas season. This has been the gift of the UMW to our congregation. This year SAM is honoring the UMW by hosting a holiday potluck. Bring your favorite holiday dish and join us in honoring the UMW and celebrating the Christmas season. Baskets! Baskets! On December 2 two baskets will be on display in the Social Hall. One will contain Women s Bean Project food items as well as a Chino UMC tote bag, handmade book marks and Christmas ornaments. The second basket will contain the ingredients for a Christmas dinner. Tickets will go on sale at this time for $1 each or 6 for $5. Drawing will be on December 16. Page 2 T HE TI DI NGS
3 Alternative Christmas Market - December 9 and 16 This is my commandment. Love one another as I have loved you. John 15:12 Choose gifts that make a difference long after the holidays are over. Again this year you can give back in a meaningful way while also helping you check things off your shopping list. With a simple $10 gift to Imagine No Malaria, send a net to a family in need of protection from malaria and honor your friend or family member. Other projects are Habitat for Humanity (houses), International Heifer Project (animals), Church World Service (blankets), and David and Margaret Home (help for girls in need). Third World Gifts and Hand Arts will have crafts from around the world with most of the money returning to the artisans as well as goods from Home Boy Industries and Women s Bean Project. Start making your gift lists now so you will be ready to go shopping on the 9th. This is shopping for the glory of God. Choir Member of the Month, October Beth Mendoza Beth Mendoza first came to CUMC as a little girl when her mother would occasionally send the kids off to church. She has memories of singing in a children s choir, practicing upstairs in one of the rooms overlooking Riverside Drive. In fact, Beth still has a bible given to her by the church when she was in the third grade. It is signed by the Superintendent of Christian Education, Margaret Mendoza, who, many years later would become her mother-in-law. Beth started attending CUMC regularly when she was 15 for the strongest of theological reasons: it was where the boy she loved went. She started singing in the choir within a very few years, and although there have been periods of absences, they can t seem to get rid of her permanently. In the early 1980 s, CUMC put on a dramatic production in the Sanctuary, in which Beth took part, and a deep love for stage performing was discovered. She went back to school to learn as much as she could about theatre and began performing throughout LA and Orange Counties. She began performing at the Candlelight Pavilion Dinner Theatre in 1999, and it became her home away from home. Retired now, Beth spends her days chasing after her granddaughter. For the last 25 years, she has loved and shown Pembroke Welsh Corgis in everything from Conformation to Herding, and she is very active in the Southern CA Corgi club. V OLU ME 20, ISS UE 1 1 Page 3
4 We Are in Mission Hygiene Kits/Food Pouches A million thanks to our church family for your donations to our ministries involving the hygiene kits and the food pouches. Some of the donations for the hygiene items came from as far away as Hawaii! Anyway, keep those donations coming folks. So many people depend on them. We continue to receive many thank you wishes from the Inland Valley Hope Partners. They serve many communities in the Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties. We continue to attempt to supply 25 hygiene kits per month. Unfortunately, they could probably use ten times that amount of kits but we continue to do our small part to help. Additionally, we continue to distribute both hygiene kits as well as meal pouches to our own homeless people in our neighborhood. Last but not least, we spoke to the Chino Valley Unified School District Care Program to inquire about which hygiene supplies were needed. We were able to take them some shampoo, toothpaste, razors, shaving cream and laundry detergent. These items were in short supply, so we were able to help the school district as well. Thank you again goes out to our church family for your continued donations to our food pantry. We can always use more! Peace, M & M Groups News! Last month we turned in IHOP receipts totaling approximately $78. They in turn sent us a check for $100. This is a great way for the church to receive a small amount of money for the General Fund. We hope you, as our church family, will continue to support this ministry by eating out at IHOP occasionally. 5 From the Worship Committee At our annual Halloween party this year, we had a group of about 20 adults, but unfortunately, no kids. We played Bingo and some other games, did a word puzzle (Pastor Matt was the big winner), made up some jokes, did some craft projects, and enjoyed some great food and drinks that attendees provided. Robert Phillips was our deejay. The Esqueda family had the best costumes. Misty came as Waldo from the Where s Waldo search puzzle books. Gerald was a cigar-smoking gangster in a zoot suit. James was a voodoo tribesman with skulls for closures on his garment. Steve and Cory Cuadras arrived before the party to help out, and it was great to see them. Steve is involved with the audiovisual department of their new church. Cory is still teaching (please remember to pray for safety for Cory and all teachers). Their daughter has a great job and is continuing her college education. Is it just me, or do kids grow up too fast? Thanks to all who attended the party and to those who helped out, especially Judy and Paul McConnell, Jenifer Lomeli, Roberta Brazelton, Rachel Houseberg, Stan Dack, and Robert Phillips. (Please forgive me if I missed anybody.) The highlight of the day was the scary organ concert given by Robert Phillips. I don t know how Robert does it, but his fingers fly over the keys faster than human eyes can follow them. He played several versions of the Dies Irae, a tune that is frequently used in horror movies when the evil character(s) appear, but is actually a Christian chant. Robert once again demonstrated his arranging skill by playing some ghoultide carols, combinations of Christmas songs and scary pieces, prompted by Robert s annoyance with retailers who have Christmas items on display alongside Halloween costumes and decorations. Many thanks to Robert for the beautiful music and to those who gave a freewill offering toward the organ fund (just over $200 was raised). Finally, if you have any ideas for a workshop (I ll research anything) or an event for the first half of next year, please let me (Kathleen Phillips) know. And if you d like to be a liturgist, Communion assistant, or blesser, let me know right away. If you already are serving in one or more of these capacities, please let me know, by NOVEMBER 15, of any dates from January through June when you CANNOT serve, because I hope to prepare the next duty roster so you ll have it by December 1. Thanks for your help. Saturday, November 17, 11-12:30: Animal appreciation and blessing service. Saturday, December 1, 10-12, decorate; 12-1, lunch; 1-2:30 Christmas singalong. United Methodist Student Day November 25 This is the last of our Special Sunday offerings for the year. Your generous gift supports scholarships, administered by the General Board of Higher Educations and Ministry. When you give today, you enrich ministry and help connect students to their faith. We meet at 9 a.m. in the Parlor on Monday morning. We have just started a new study on FAITH IS THE ANSWER, BUT WHAT ARE THE QUESTIONS by Pastor James W. Moore. We have been busy helping to make the hygiene kits for those in need. We would love for you to consider attending our group. We hope to see you there. Blessings, M and M Groupo Choir Member of the Month, November Sue Rhodes Choir member Sue Rhodes was born in upstate New York, moving as a teenager to California. She graduated from Montclair High School and attended Chaffey College. She has always loved music and her talent was utilized at Westmont UMC, Pomona, where she was a member for thirty years, singing in the choir, leading congregational singing, and sharing some songs she herself had composed. She and husband Dave Taylor were married in 2002 and came to Chino UMC after Westmont no longer offered English-speaking services. Dave suddenly passed away in 2015, leaving a large gap in Sue s life. Sue worked for Lockheed Martin for 28 years, holding various positions, including janitorial, receiving, packing, and shipping. She is the mother of two sons who live in Utah and grandmother to two children, aged 13 and 7. We are glad she has made her church home with us and has become a part of our choir.
