12 From the Yard Office A Happy Valentine s Day hello to all my fellow model railroaders that love our hobby!! Bet you didn t think that I could work Cupid s Day into this!! On Wednesday, your Division Five officers made a donation presentation to the Capital Area District Library. Between the $1000 that the Division members authorized and an additional $500 that individual members donated, we presented a $1500 donation to the Library. Elsewhere in the Journal, you will find more information on the presentation. I was very proud of the members that both approved and gave towards this donation. Our donation will be part of a fund that will be used to upgrade the meeting rooms that we use, which will make it even more enjoyable for us during our events. Along with these future upgrades, the Division has purchased a new projector and camera for clinic presentations. The camera is of a high quality which will allow us to project clinics on the big screen for everyone to see when we are presenting how to clinics to the group. As many of you know, the lack of such equipment has made these types of clinics very hard to present successfully. I am quite excited about the possible clinics that we can present to you in the future and I will be looking to you to come up with some good ideas for new presentations. I want to thank Ron St Laurent for presenting the idea of procuring this equipment to your officers and investigating the different options that we had. I think that you will be very happy with the equipment that Ron has selected. This month, our meeting is competing with the Saline Train Show and I m not sure just how many people will be attending our meeting. Richard Kubik will be giving us a presentation of servos which will be very interesting. There are many different types of servos and many different applications in model railroading for them. I m really looking forward to this presentation. This will also be the first presentation using our new projector and camera which will allow you to see these servos close up. After Richard s presentation, our plan is to break the members into groups and work on names for the Division and the 2018 Convention. The following paragraph was in last month s Journal and I am repeating it here since it explains the goal of this work group. Please put your thinking caps on and help us come up with some good names to choose from. The Division name is going to be with us a long time, so I want us to get the right one! I plan on March to choose the names but if there is not enough participation at the February meeting, it may have to be postponed until a later date. I mentioned last month that we would be giving (at least) a $20 gift certificate to the member that come up with the winning name for our Division. But this is only for individuals that forward the name directly to me before the members vote on it. The name(s) will all be voted on at the March meeting, and if the winning name was submitted by an individual and not created by the group, the gift certificate will be presented to that individual. Depending on the time that we have, we may cancel the layout tour. My layout, The Nashville Road is open for visitors if you all decide to come for a visit. I know that just about all of you have visited the Nashville and many of you have operated on it. If you haven t seen it in the last year, there have been several upgrades. A decision to visit the layout or cancel the visit can be made by the group at the end of our brain storming session, either way is fine with me. I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday! In early January a plea for donations was sent out by the Capitol Area District Library (CADL), Downtown Lansing location. The donations would help defray expenses for the upcoming renovations of the basement galleries A, B and C, including new furniture and new dividing walls. Division 5 has been meeting in these basement galleries since 1990, when the division was reinstituted. Hearing the plea from the library at a Division 5 meeting, the membership voted to donate $1,000 towards this effort. Individual members added another $500 for a total donation of $1,500 from Division 5. In the picture, behind the group, you see a wall displaying a donation tree. Individual leaves represent donations to the library. Division 5 will be honored with a bronze leaf added to this tree. Andy Keeney stated, "We are very grateful to have such a wonderful facility in which to hold our meetings and feel this donation is a testament of our gratitude." Photo and story by: Ron StLaurent
