1 UNIT PLAN Grade Level: 1 Unit #: 4 Unit Name: Historical Figures Big Idea/Theme: Historical figures played important roles in promoting and protecting democratic values. Culminating Assessment: Select one of the important s from the unit. Dress up (optional) as one of the historical figures and present information to the class about their contributions and the significance of their contributions to life. Unit Understanding(s) Students will understand George Washington was selected as the first president of the U.S. and played a role in the defeat of the British. Benjamin Franklin s almanac and his scientific experiments as well as his participation in the country s founding are important events in U.S. history. Thomas Jefferson s role in writing the Declaration of Independence is important to U.S. history. Abraham Lincoln developed the Emancipation Proclamation. Rosa Park s actions as part of the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, affected equal rights for all s. Martin Luther King s I Have a Dream Speech and his actions helped all s gain equal rights. Historical and political figures contribute to the democracy of the United States. Unit Essential Question(s): Why was George Washington such a? What role did George Washington play in the defeat of the British? Why was Benjamin Franklin important in the founding of our country? Why were Benjamin Franklin s almanac and his scientific experiments important? What important role did Thomas Jefferson play in writing the Declaration of Independence?
