The essay is due on. Moral courage is the courage to take action for moral reasons despite the risk of adverse consequences. Moral Courage: to make strong moral decisions (with a deep understanding of right and wrong), regardless of whether that is what everyone else wants you to do. Courage is required to take action when one has doubts or fears about the consequences. Moral courage therefore involves deliberation or careful thought. Moral courage may also require physical courage when the consequences are punishment or other bodily peril. A hero exhibits moral courage. Heroes are brave, humble, and noble people. STEP ONE: DEFINE MORAL COURAGE Using the information above, define moral courage in your own words. This is the basis from which you will make your argument. This definition will dictate your entire essay. 2 2 STEP THREE: RESEARCH YOUR HISTORICAL FIGURE For your research, you must examine at least eight different sources. At least four of them must be primary sources. For each of your eight sources, you must complete a Source Analysis using the provided graphic organizer. As you come across a document, give the document a number (1-8). Photo-copy pages of a book you will use or reference. Print off webpages used. Staple document to the Source Analysis. Essay clip all 8 sources together for grading. Mr. Vallee has created a wonderful research page for you to begin your research. Ms. Eckert has also located great resources for you to find primary sources. Go to You can also find the Source Analysis form. STEP FOUR: DEFINE YOUR DOCUMENTS Examine your documents. For each document decide what the message is about whether your historical figure is morally courageous and record it below: STEP FIVE: BUCKET YOUR MESSAGES Examine the messages. Pull out three themes or buckets in which you can categorize the documents above. Write the names of the category on each bucket.

10 FINAL CHECKLIST: 10 Your essay should be formatted like the image to the right. All of the sources you used must be cited in a Works Cited, like the image to the right. Read through your essay. Historians always write in the past tense. He/she went to or He/she had a Double check your tense. Sometimes students write in past participle, He/she had went which is incorrect tense for a historical essay. Go to a quiet place and read your essay out loud to yourself. Doing this, you will discover many of your mistakes because sentences won t sound right. Have a friend or family member read your essay looking for mistakes in logic and the strength of your arguments.
