2 From The Pastor s Pen Susan V. Mills Many thanks to the church for granting me two weeks off to travel to Houston for vacation and to attend a Theology Conference as part of my Continuing Education. The first week has flown by! We were able to visit with both my parents and my daughter, her husband and the two grandsons. And all of us were delighted to attend the play that my oldest grandson was in called, I Never Saw Another Butterfly. It was produced by the Theater Arts Academy in conjunction with the AD Players of Houston. It is a play about the children in the Terezine concentration camp during the Holocaust which tells the story of children in horrendous conditions who were able to summon strength and hope to survive (or at least the will to survive) during that awful time. The children of Terezine had a very brave teacher who helped them tell their stories through song, poems and drawings. Teaching was forbidden in the camp, but they devised a method to fool the guards so that they could continue to learn. After the war ended, the poems and drawings of the children were compiled into a book. The children who participated in the production were all required to attend the AD Players production of The Diary of Anne Frank and visit the Holocaust Museum in Houston as part of their preparation for their play. They worked hard and learned much in the process. All in the hopes that history may never repeat itself! For me, it was a very abrupt introduction to the Lenten season, to be sure! We have all been driven by the Spirit at some point in our lives into the desert where we are forced to confront the dark places in the world around us or perhaps in our own hearts. During this Lenten Journey with Jesus we are told the stories of several individuals who met with Christ in the dark, out-of-the-way places: Nicodemus who had questions he could only ask Jesus in the cover of darkness; the woman at the well, who had questions so deep, she was convinced that even the Christ could not reach them; and then there was the young man who had been held captive to the darkness his whole life. My prayer this Lenten season is that the Spirit will lead us in our wandering and wondering, in our dreaming and awakening, and that we will be made anew as we meet Christ in the shadowy places of our lives. None of this can happen, of course, without the work of the Spirit in our hearts and lives. My friend, Jan Richardson, recently shared a prayer for the Lenten journey: Move over the face of my deep, my darkness, my endless restless chaos, and create, O God; trouble me, comfort me, stir me up, and calm me, but do not cease to breathe Your Spirit into my wakening soul. 6 A Prayer Update on Mason Carney As many of you remember, we offered prayers for Mason Carney during his kidney transplant last year. This update was sent from his family: Hello All, We hope this finds everyone doing well. With any luck spring is trying to emerge wherever you might be! It s hard to believe it s already been a year since Mason s kidney transplant but today March 11 th marks his one year anniversary, so we wanted to give a quick update! Our family has come a long way since last March but Mason especially! He has truly had an amazing year of growth and good health! He now sits close to the 50% mark on the charts having gained ten pounds and grown five inches since receiving his new kidney (I can t seem to shuffle the clothes out of his closet quick enough!). His kidney team is impressed and doesn t need to see him back in clinic until June! Labs (blood work) in six weeks he has never gone more than a month in between labs in his entire life. We met with his urologist yesterday and his recent urodynamics test (Feb. 28 th ) results showed a tiny bit of improvement along with normal pressures. His body continues to overcome amazing challenges which we re hoping will continue to work in his favor. Therefore, all remains well with the new kidney and we can follow up in six months. This is the first time Mason has gone an entire year without having had a surgery and the clock is going to keep ticking truly a wonderful thing! The kids spring break (March 24-28) just happens to fall in between Mason s one year postkidney anniversary (March 11 th ) and our upcoming ten year wedding anniversary (April 16 th ) so we are driving to Florida to celebrate as a family at the beach!! Simply make a notation on the memo line for Waldport Food Share. Food Share is currently experiencing a shortage of food and having to turn folks away. Our donation to Waldport Food Share for March totaled 116 pounds of food. Please remember to bring in your cans and other non-perishable items!
