1 Since the Arkansas Activities Association s creation of the Arkansas Interscholastic Star program in the school year, Arkansas high schools have selected over 1,000 outstanding young people as the individual in that year s eleventh grade class who best exemplifies the criteria described by the Three A s of the Interscholastic Star program. These criteria are: * Active Involvement in school activities and community service November 2010 Junior Alert: It s Time to Plan for Interscholastic Star ways to highlight the student activities programs. They are involved in assemblies, parades, community relations, mentoring, service projects and sportsmanship promotions to name just a few. These students are excellent role models for others to emulate. * Adaptability to meet challenging situations with courage, perseverance and commitment, and an * Attitude of cooperation, dependability and application of interpersonal skills. Since the program begin, 18 outstanding young people have been named to serve as the representative for school activities programs and the values found in them. In 2009, Lonoke High School raised almost 5500 pounds of food for their friends and neighbors. The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance, KATV Channel 7, Stallion Transportation Group, US Bank and the Arkansas Activities Association are sponsoring a food drive at War Memorial Stadium during the high school championship football games December 3, 4, 10, 11. The Spirit of Giving is an annual food drive that benefits anti-hunger organizations throughout Arkansas through the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance. The first phase of the drive is a head-to-head competition between the teams on the field. The food collected by your school will be distributed by an anti-hunger organization in your community, helping your friends and neighbors. An award will be given at half-time to the team that donates the most food. The US Department of Agriculture ranks Arkansas as having the third highest incidence of hunger in the nation, and the need is growing. Almost 500,000 of our fellow Arkansans are affected. Let there be no mistake, hunger touches every community in our state, and affects friends and neighbors. An estimated 1 in 6 Arkansans doesn t know from where they will get their next meal, according to Rhonda Sanders, Executive Director of the Alliance. As you are preparing to come support your team on the field, please remember to bring a non-perishable food donation. Or collect food at your school during the week and bring it on the spirit bus. Collection points will be conveniently located at gates 1 and 7. Your support will strengthen your team and your community! The second phase is an overall competition. The team that raises the most food overall will receive a $1500 donation! This donation is courtesy of Stallion Transportation Group based in Beebe, Arkansas.
