Sister Linda Nelson, WM opened the meeting with a comment taken from the January 1955 minutes, hoping this year will be filled with service to the members and our Order. Sister Dorothy Elliott has settled nicely into Harwood Manor, a residence where the meals are provided and nursing care is also provided when needed. This is where her husband Stavert resided the last few years until his passing in December Brother Jack & Sister Lyn Smith advised the Chapter they will cover membership fees for 2016 for any new members. Also Brother Jack is giving a door prize at every meeting. While they are holidaying in the South, Brother Don Finan is taking the Worthy Patron chair the two months Jack is away. Sister Linda Nelson thanked Sister Beth Joseph for the Birthday Book, it had been her mother s, so has many birthdays of old. She also said she was overwhelmed by the many gifts she received and the many and varied expressions of congratulations. Brother Pat Hutchison reported on the Trustee Meeting and audit. Sister Beth Joseph had a phone conversation with Sister Bunty Keilback.

Sister Bunty said she and Brother Chuck were both doing okay. Sister Iris Thompson received a phone call from Sister Ida Drummond; who lives in Edmonton; she is keeping well and sent New Year greetings to our Chapter members. The date for our Official Visit will be May 10, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. There will be a meal before the meeting. Sister Wilda O Brien refreshed our collective memory on the story of the Izzy dolls. She has already knit 24 dolls and will be our convener. Sister Idella Barr presented Sister Linda Ard with her commission as Grand Representative of Alabama in Saskatchewan and Sister Shelley Mikkelson with her Commission of Grand Representative of Oregon in Saskatchewan. Sister Wynn Richards will be presented with her commission, Grand Representative of Wisconsin in Saskatchewan, at a later date. Brother Gordon Yarde will be away for the March meeting as his Installation as a Deacon in the Anglican Church is on that day. Congratulations, Gordon! Sis. Idella WGM gave an interesting report on General Grand Chapter in Washington DC. A Worthy Star Sister Linda Nelson, WM, asked me to choose a Worthy Star member to be highlighted. My thoughts went directly to Sister Leola Macdonald, PM this is her Star History... Sister Leola Macdonald (nee Minnette) was initiated into North Battleford Chapter #2 on September 11, 1950 with Sister Maude Sturgeon, WM and Leola s father Brother Ed Minnette, WP It was a very impressive ceremony. She wore a formal gown. It was the Official Visit of the Worthy Grand Matron. Her dad Ed, gave the obligation beautifully and her mother Betty, though nervous, did very well with her lecture as Esther. 3 Sister Leola grew to love Eastern Star and served many offices and recommended many candidates to Eastern Star. Leola and Doug were married in November, He was a great help to her for many years. Leola served in all offices except Sentinel which she served as a substitute at times. Some offices she served more than once. She was Marshal 5 times, Worthy Matron 2 times, 1972, 1993, with Brother Doug as Worthy Patron, Secretary 4 times , Treasurer 4 times , Associate Matron 3 times, Associate Conductress 2 times, and served in every Star Point office, some more than once. Leola supervised the making of cancer dressings, collected stamps for Chapter #2 and assisted at the Red Cross Blood Clinic. She was District Deputy Grand Matron in 1980 and served as Grand Electa at the Grand Chapter. She was the Grand Representative of Ontario in Saskatchewan in 1985 and Grand Representative of Colorado in Saskatchewan in Leola received an Honorary Life Membership in 2003 and received her 60 year pin in May your day be filled with Blessings A Celtic Proverb ACACIA CHAPTER #3, BIGGAR Submitted by Sister Urla Tyler, PM At the February meeting of Acacia Chapter No. 3, Biggar, and WGM Sister Idella Barr (right) presented Sister Doreen Wylie (second from right) with a two-year commission Grand Representative of Pennsylvania in Saskatchewan. Also pictured are Worthy Patron Jim Reid and acting Worthy Matron Debbie Robinson. Sister Doreen will be a 70 year member come May of this year.

We remember all those who have passed from our Chapter in 2015: - Ev Ross PM (72 year member) - Audrey Cherry s companion, George Reid - Albert Morrison PP 4 (l-r: Jim Reid, WP, Debbie Robinson, Acting WM, Doreen Wylie, and Idella Barr, WGM) SASKATOON #4 Submitted by Sister Bev Otsuka, PGM As we finished up our Chapter Year in 2015, we were faced with the same excitement in November in regards to our elections... Funny how the excitement has changed throughout the years from election from ballot to election by guilt or better yet, whose turn is it this year? Some ask, isn t it better in the city chapters? Ha, ha... actually (and I think I can speak for the other city chapters...) we are just a small chapter in a big room...but thankfully, we do have a full slate of line officers once again for 2016: WM - Donna Rederberg (No P.M. behind her name) WP Richard Thomas PP AM - Judy Brown (No P.M. behind her name) AP - Bob Brown PP Secretary - Carla Simsic PM Treasurer - Patricia Meddins PM Conductress - Bev Otsuka PGM Assoc. Conductress - Kayla Ingram (No P.M. behind her name) It is always exciting to elect into the line, a member who has never done that office before. It puts a new attentiveness and optimism into our membership. We look forward to their new ideas and enthusiasm. In 2015, we put on a couple of suppers in the Shrine Club to raise some monies for our Chapter. We do enjoy our time working together and becoming a stronger bonded group. There sometimes is far more importance of working together than just raising monies. We welcome all visitors to our meetings as we gather on the 3 rd Mondays of the month (not in July and August) at 730 p.m. Come and join us anytime! From the Editors: Our apologies to Sister Bev, PGM for not including this article in the December 2015 issue. REGINA CHAPTER #7 off and Celebrating 100 Years! Submitted by Penny Pedersen, PM Let the Celebrations Begin! Saturday, January 23, the Blue Room of the Regina Masonic Temple was a proverbial bee hive. And there was lots of buzzing. Our Grand Lecturer came to assist us with a School of Instruction. The Worthy Matron, Sister Mary Ann Couse had invited our sister Chapters of Mizpah, Assiniboia, Kitchener and Corinthian plus all our members, new and not so new. There was one member from Kitchener, our Grand Lecturer, our Worthy Grand Matron and 19 members from Regina No. 7. Yes, we went in to information overload - not from our Grand Lecturer - Sister Bev had everything very well organized - but there were so many questions and comments flying around it was hard even for the seasoned member to keep track of what direction we were going. This goes to show, that it does not matter how long we are members, there are always questions, new things to think about and new ways to approach long standing rules.

Our School of Instruction was followed by a pizza party at the home of Larry and Mary Ann Couse. We were pleased to see four husbands join the group - Michael, Frank, Dean and Larry - good on you boys. This was the first of many social gatherings planned for this year. Thanks to all for a super day - and that includes Mother Nature. She made travel very convenient. Regina Chapter No. 7 Historically Speaking January & February 1916 The following is a quote from Regina Chapter No. 7 80th Anniversary booklet coordinated by then Worthy Matron, Eileen M. Inglis, PM, Worthy Patron Allan M. Inglis, PGP, and Secretary, Mabel Andrew, PM The following notices appeared in the columns of the Regina Leader on January 17th and 18th, (l-r clockwise: Laura Cookson, Tracy Gillies, Bev Otsuka, Melinda Nagy, Kim Rathwell) our members spouses enjoy some delicious pizza Our WM Sister Mary Ann Couse hard at work in her kitchen! "FORMING EASTERN STAR LODGE: Mrs. Mary Slipper, Secretary of the Ontario Grand Chapter Eastern Star, will be in Regina today for the purpose of considering the advisability of initiating a Chapter of the Eastern Star here. Mrs. Slipper would like to meet members, and those interested, at the home of Mrs. H. R. Barrett, 1535 Athol Street, this afternoon at 2:30." Our Chapter was organized on January 17th, The Instituting Officer was Mrs. Mary Slipper of Port Arthur, Deputy of the Most Worthy Grand Patron of the General Grand Chapter and present Secretary of the Ontario assisted by Mrs. W.C. Trick and Mrs. W.J. McCauley of Mizpah Chapter No. 1, Moose Jaw and Mrs. L.I. Irvine of Regina and Mrs. Bingham of Omaha. It was decided to organize that evening. The only place available for the meeting on such short notice was the Fur Store of Mr. John Grills situated on Scarth Street. A special meeting was arranged and twenty-six who were eligible met and were instituted into a chapter known as Regina Chapter No. 7. Several could not become members at this meeting as they did not hold demits. They were Sisters Barrett, Irvine, Norton and Case. The charter fee was only $1.00 and it was decided to leave the membership open for one month. Many took advantage of this and a class of fifty-nine initiates were given the degrees by the officers of Mizpah Chapter No. 1 of Moose Jaw. Sister Violet Reilly was installed Worthy Matron and Brother L.C. Harris, Worthy Patron. The meetings were held in

the Knights of Pythias Hall in the McCallum Hill Building. This room did not afford much accommodation and no kitchen. The members brought their own food and obtained coffee, cups and spoons from a restaurant. Sister Reilly said their first equipment were teaspoons donated by members and she used a tack hammer for a gavel until they were permitted to use one belonging to the Masons. By the end of the year they had 135 members, a fine showing for one year. It appears the home of Mrs. Barrett stood for nearly one hundred years, however, we did not make it there in time to take a picture of that home. You see in the photo below our Worthy Matron, Sister Mary Ann Couse standing in front of the newly erected home at that address, where it all began. Jan 25, 1916: following the organizational meeting of January 17, Regina Chapter No. 7 held their first official meeting. Minutes were read and adopted. They decided to hold their meetings in the McCallum Hill Block, Room 305 at a monthly charge of $5.00. Initiation and membership fees were discussed. Following what appears to have been quite a lengthy discussion, they moved the membership fee be $8.00 each and $16.00 per couple. An amendment quickly followed with the initiation fee of $3.00 and annual dues of $5.00 per year payable half yearly in advance. An interesting note is these motions were all moved and seconded by brothers. The following committees were set: Sick and Visiting, Social, and Finance. Then the brothers 6 moved that the Chapter be governed by the bylaws of the Grand Lodge. Carried. Again moved by the brothers that the Chapter regularly meet on the first Thursday of the month. Carried. Although, in the minutes it appeared this motion was previously carried, it was moved and seconded (again by brothers) that members pay half yearly dues in advance to enable the purchase of supplies and regalia. This motion was carried. It was apparent they were doing their best to get as many members in as charter members, as they extended the charter fee till the first Thursday in February. "The W.M. then addressed the meeting in a few well- chosen remarks referring to the Chapter being in its infancy and asked for the hearty cooperation of all the members to help make it a success. The meeting then closed in due form after the singing of God Save the King." Thursday, February 3, 1916: Communication was received from Morse with two applications for membership. The secretary was to write to these applicants advising them they must get a letter of consent from the Chapter in whose jurisdiction they live in order to make application here. The 68 petitions which had previously been presented to the Investigating Committee were reported as favourable, the ballot was declared favourable and these applicants were duly elected to receive the degrees. A motion was moved and carried that an invitation be extended to Mizpah Chapter No. 1, Moose Jaw to meet with us at our next meeting and to put on the work of the initiation. It is apparent these invitations were very serious as a committee was struck to take care of the visiting sisters from Moose Jaw. Two bibles were donated. Four Trustees were appointed. A Ribbon committee was set up. Worthy Matron, Violet M. Reilly declared the office of the Associate Conductress was vacant owing to her resignation. By the way, the sisters stepped up as this meeting progressed and made and seconded most of the motions.

A matter of interest: The Fur Store of Mr. John Grills was located at 1843 Scarth Street, and was known as Grills and Co. Furriers and Ladies Ready to Wear. Today it is a ladies store called Madam Yes. A photo is shown below. In visiting this location I found a friendly young woman who was happy to hear our story and to allow me to take pictures. It is interesting to find little hidden gems that we do not know about in our city. At least I didn't. Cute clothes, hats and shoes. (l-r: Back Row: Secretary - May Barr; Martha - Kathy Hamilton; Esther - Norma Lintick; Treasurer- Helen McKeen-Kratz; Sentinel - Lou Lintick; Third Row: Electa - Effie Cook; Chaplain - Roxanne Pederson; Ruth - Lillie Schultz; Second Row Organist - June Sanderson; Adah - Gerry Howat; AC - Alice Bedford; Conductress- Alice Tataryn; Warder - Shirley McKay Seated: AM - Sophie Sajtos; WM - Linda Galloway; WP - Rick Galloway; AP - Dick Tataryn 7 PRINCE ALBERT CHAPTER #16 Submitted by Sister Dorothea Herron, PM Our Chapter was pleased to present 25 year pins to Sister Norma and Brother Lou Lintick, (pictured below with Acting Worthy Patron Rick Galloway and Worthy Matron Dorothea Herron) Our installation was in December GOLDEN WEST CHAPTER #38, LANIGAN Submitted by Brother Keith Bird, PGP Golden West Chapter met on December 4, 2015 for the Installation of officers: - WM: Marilyn Bodner, PM; - WP: Ron Reierson, PP; - AM: Eva Dinkel, PM; - AP: Keith Bird, PGP, - Secretary: Evelyn Reierson, PM; - Treasurer. We are looking forward to a summer BBQ, date and location TBA; our Official Visit will be June 10 and our Birthday Pot Luck lunch will be October 17 and December 3 will be our Installation/Christmas party. Our members have made banners for Radiant Chapter; Miriam Chapter; Radiant-Miriam Chapter and Golden West Chapter. Mary & Keith Bird were the WM & WP of Silver Star Chapter when it closed so Keith has knitted a Silver Star banner. Several members are knitting Izzy Dolls as I write this I am looking at 22 with #23 in progress. LLOYDMINSTER #76 Submitted by Sister Heather Sigmundson QUEEN ALEXANDRA #84, KINDERSLEY Submitted by Sister Sandra L. McIntyre PM At the Feb. 1st meeting, Sister Anne Bruce PGM, on behalf of Worthy Grand Matron Sister Idella Barr, had the honour to present a Grand Representative Commission to Sister Beryl Near to Australia. She also announced that Sister Sandra McIntyre would be receiving a Grand Representative Commission to Wyoming. This is the second Grand Representative Commissions for these two members. In January 1996, Past Grand Matron Sister Clara Lyons, on behalf of Worthy Grand Matron Sister Connie (Wilson) Pinnow, presented Sister Beryl with a Commission to the District of Columbia and to Sister Sandra a Commission to B.C. and the Yukon. Congratulations to Sister Grace Hill, PM on her appointment as Grand Representative to Nebraska! (l-r: Brother Tom McManus WP, Sister Beryl Near - Grand Representative to Australia, Sister Anne Bruce PGM, Sister Sandra McIntyre - Grand Representative to Wyoming, Sister Frances McManus WM) Wishing you lots of fun and laughter with your new appointment! 9 CORINTHIAN CHAPTER #89, GOVAN THEN AND NOW Submitted by Sister Louise E. Ross, PM On February 27, 1930 a meeting was held in the Masonic Temple, Govan, to institute Corinthian Chapter #89, Order of the Eastern Star. L. Fairweather was installed as Worthy Matron and J. Orville Clark as Worthy Patron. The Chapter from Nokomis exemplified the degrees of the Order following the Installation. Because Govan was an agricultural community, it was decided to hold meetings on the first Tuesday after every full moon. The dues were set at $5.00. On July 16, 1930, our Chapter was constituted by Clara Agar, Worthy Grand Matron of Saskatchewan. It was stated in the minutes of the first meeting that Corinthian Chapter could look forward to the future with every confidence. Corinthian Chapter has continued to exist during years of hardship, years of prosperity, years of war and years of peace. Donations are still being made to many worthwhile causes. In 2015, our Chapter donated to the Govan Optimist Club, the Allan Blair Cancer Clinic, Heart and Stroke Foundation, ESTARL (Eastern Star Training Awards for Religious Leadership), Lanigan- Nokomis Food Bank, to the Senior Homes in Strasbourg, Nokomis and Raymore, the Last Mountain Music Festival; as well as to the Worthy Grand Matron s special project. Our accomplishments are many: we have sponsored Guides and Brownies in the Govan community, catered to weddings and meetings of other organizations and lodges. We put on fashion shows and sponsored musical groups; hosted teas and bake sales; held social functions with the Masonic Lodge and neighboring chapters. Help was also given to worthwhile appeals when financially possible. Corinthian Chapter has been honored by having some of their members elected and appointed to fill some of the highest offices in OES: General Grand Chapter Committee members, appointed by the Most Worthy Grand Matron of the General Grand Chapter; the following members were appointed: Betty Abrey, Donna Sanders, Glenn Boughton. Elected as Worthy Grand Matrons and Worthy Grand Patrons of SK were the following: Gertrude Smith Semans, Alice McDougall Nokomis, Betty Abrey Imperial, Donna Sanders Regina, Glenn Boughton Regina (now of Victoria). They have brought honor to our Chapter. Two members of Corinthian Chapter received the prestigious honor to serve in the General Grand Chapter Sessions when they were held in St Louis, Missouri. Ruth Scott was honored to fill the position of Assistant to the Right Worthy Grand Warder; Louise Ross was honored to be appointed as General Grand Chapter Assembly Page. Many changes have occurred in our Chapter since it was constituted 85 years ago. Our membership has declined, our dues have been raised, etc. But we strive to live by the principles of our Order. Our interest has not waned to always do our best. Our Chapter membership may be small, but WE ARE MIGHTY! YORKTON CHAPTER # HIGHLIGHTS Submitted by Sister Gladys Lehtisaari, WM Yorkton Chapter # 92 managed to fill all the chairs for the ensuing year, except for Ruth which remains vacant, with most of the officers succeeding themselves, as follows: 9

Worthy Matron: Gladys Lehtisaari, PM Worthy Patron: Dave Birchard, PP Associate Matron: Patricia Polachek, PM Associate Patron: Wayne Stephens, PP Secretary: Cathy Toth, PM Treasurer: Karen Wilson, PM Conductress: Ruby Lee, PGM Associate Conductress: Lillian Parker, PM Chaplain: Maxine Greiner, PM Marshal: Earl Greiner, PP Organist: Roderick Lee, PGP Adah: Velma Fuchs Ruth: Vacant Esther: Kathy Gordon Martha: Angie Oleskiw, PM Electa: Lorraine Poitras Warder: Joseph Poitras Sentinel: David Polachek, PP Trustees: Patricia Polachek, PM (2016), Wayne Stephens, PP (2017), Kathy Gordon (2018) The Committees remain the same as the previous year with the addition of Photographer, Sister Kathy Gordon. We were delighted to see that our two newly-installed members accepted to take a station in the chapter. This year, as in the previous year, our aim will continue to strengthen the chapter by reassuring our knowledge and sharing with others, to try and be financially solvent, and hopefully increase in membership. January was our recess month. At our February meeting, Sister Gladys Lehtisaari WM was surprised with a presentation of a Grand Representative of Vermont in Saskatchewan, by Brother David Polachek, Grand Trustee, on behalf of Sister Idella Barr, WGM who was unable to attend this meeting. Sister Gladys thanked the Chapter and Grand Chapter for this honour and promise to perform her duties to the best of her abilities. In reviewing the 2015 Financial Statement we find out we had a $ deficit year. This past year we lost 5 members: 3 Death, 1 Demit, and 1 Suspension. Brother Wayne, Fund Raising Committee, presented plans for this year which are a Garage Sale in May, Soup and Sandwich in the fall, and preparation of tickets for 10 sale for the Stanley Cup Pool. Sister Maxine Greiner will convene a Luncheon for the Masons in March. Sister Cathy Toth donated an Afghan to raffle at our Official Visit, Worthy Matron Project Blind Book Sale fundraising towards chapter expenses. Hopefully all these projects will raise enough funds to cover our expenses for the ensuing year. Brother Earl Greiner, Publicity Committee, will approach the Masonic Lodge and see if we can advertise our meetings this year in the local paper, together, and share the cost. Sister Patsy Polachek, Membership Committee, shared some ideas on how to increase our membership, and the possibility to purchase a blazer to identify our chapter in certain functions. Our chapter was saddened by the loss of Brother Don Low who passed to the Grand Chapter on High last January. The Altar was draped in his memory. Prior to the meeting a delicious Lunch was enjoyed by all present, provided by Sisters Maxine Greiner and Patsy Polachek. This year we will be celebrating our 85 th Anniversary and discussed on how we can best celebrate this important milestone. Birthday member Sister Doreen Murray was Honoured.
