1 Prairie UU Society 2010 Whenona Drive Madison WI (608) Located off the south Frontage Rd. of the West Beltline Hwy near the Seminole Hwy exit. NON PROFIT ORG U.S. POSTAGE PAID MADISON, WI PERMIT NO PRAIRIE FIRE As the prairie stretches out until it becomes one with the sky, let us reach out to touch and be one with the natural world and with one another. From our Bond of Union. July 25, 2003 The Prairie Fire is the newsletter of Prairie Unitarian Universalist Society and is published semi-monthly. The two most recent issues may be seen on Prairie s Web site at President: Ken Skog; (608) Editor: Dan Proud, prairieu@execpc.com; (608) PRAIRIE CALENDAR Sunday, July 27 10:00 a.m. Raising Cain, Raising UUs presented at Sauk City by Mary Somers and friends from four other UU congregations in the area. Tuesday, July 29 Men's Homeless Shelter Breakfast Wednesday, July 30 6:30 p.m. Spanish Speakers Potluck Sunday, August 3 10:00 a.m. "Chakra 2: Emotions, water, fluidity, pleasure" presented by Judy Skog. August 3 10 Prairie s Interfaith Hospitality Network Shift Sunday, August 10 10:00 a.m. "Wisconsin Environmental Initiative--Green Buildings" presented by John Imes. Sunday, August 17 10:00 a.m. "A Musical Celebration of Animals," a multigenerational program presented by Doleta Chapru and Dan Proud. Next Prairie Fire deadline is Sunday, August 3, DETAILS OF UPCOMING EVENTS Sunday, July 27 The joint congregational meeting in Sauk City begins at 10 am. The theme is "Raising Cain, Raising UUs" and will focus on religious education. The service will be presented by Prairie, Sauk, James Reeb, and First Society UU churches. The newly formed Janesville group will also join us. We will briefly present RE curriculum, youth circles, the teen years, covenants, and social action through adult RE. Babysitting is provided. A potluck will follow, with beverages and set-up provided, but bring some food to share. Directions: take Hwy 12 to Sauk City across the river to the first stop light. Then turn right north on Water Street, go 3 blocks, left on Polk, go 2 blocks, and it is the big blue building, with the sign: "A Free Congregation of Sauk County, A Unitarian Fellowship." Sunday, August 3 We will explore yoga positions related to the Second Chakra. This chakra governs emotions, with goals of fluidity of movement, pleasure and connection. Water is the element related to this chakra. If you want, bring a piece of coral, or a shell to put on the altar (and to take home again, with all the good energy we raise). Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. I will modify the positions for people who would be more (continued)
2 comfortable participating from a chair, but there will also be rug space available for those who choose. Don't let the E word scare you off. This chakra is also about connection. Take a risk. You might find out something about yourself, and you might even find some pleasure in the movements. Sunday, August 10 John Imes, owner of the Arbor House Bed & Breakfast, will tell us about the environmentally friendly building techniques that went into the remodeling of and the addition to the Arbor House B&B. Sunday, August 17 For "A Musical Celebration of Animals," Prairie musicians of all ages are invited to perform their favorite music about beasties, birds or crawly things. We will include an occasional singalong which folk instrumentalists are welcome to accompany. If you wish to perform, contact Doleta Chapru, ideally by July 30 ( dchapru@aol.com, or , or 239 Standish Court, Madison WI 53705). Please no calls or s the first two weeks in August. Late entries will be accepted August OUR SOCIETY PRAIRIE WORK DAY--SAT., AUGUST 2 Come one, come all, for the next installment of makeour-church-a-fit-place-to-live. There will be a work day at Prairie on Saturday, August 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will focus on de-molding (washing) walls and floors in the basement, and cleaning the kitchen (especially the fridge). The other big task is to clean all the toys in the RE area and organize things for the start of the RE year in September. You need no special talent, other than a desire to make things clean. There will be cleaning activities available for all abilities, including children. Cleaning is actually a great way to give our children a sense of ownership and pride in the building (not to mention us adults, too). A representative from the RE committee will be 2 available to direct the activity related to organizing and cleaning toys. Cleaning supplies will be available, but if you like to wear gloves when you clean, it would be good to bring your own. It might be helpful to have a few extra buckets & sponges & mops, so people don't have to wait for supplies. Please tell Judy Skog ( or jaskog@tds.net) if you plan to come, so she doesn't need to call you. PRAIRIE BOOK CLUB--SUN., AUGUST 10 THE NO. 1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY by Alexander McCall Smith is the August 10 Prairie Book Club selection. We meet after the Prairie Sunday service, around 11:45 am. This is an open book club. If you have read the book you are welcome to come. Bring food to share. PRAIRIE PLAYREADERS Anyone interested in hosting one of the monthly Playreaders session, please send the date or month you are interested in hosting to Susan Hagstrom, 916 Shorewood Blvd., Madison, WI 53705, or SusanTanyaAmI@aol.com (It is a capital i, as in me, myself and I, right before symbol) by August 16. As host of Prairie Playreaders, you can choose the play to be read. It is good to estimate parts needed as between 4-15 (the upper reaches, people read multiple parts). Some munchies are usually provided by the host, with a dessert during either intermission or at the end. Playreaders is usually held on a Saturday with a start time of either 7 or 7:30, chosen by the host. This is an opportunity for anyone who has long wanted to hear their favorite play read aloud! Susan Hagstrom FOUND A white plastic plate labeled "Epicure" on the back was found at the July 6 picnic. If yours, call Warren Hagstrom QUESTIONNAIRES
3 Please return your completed Prairie Program Committee Questionnaires to the tray in the back of the meeting room or by mail to Warren Hagstrom. I didn't participate in the arguments, but one of the reasons I love Prairie is because people are really passionate about their ideas, and they are eloquent in expressing them (albeit at excessive length). I learned about our extended family, what one won't learn in a group of strangers. And I think I learned more about the Madison urban area, although I could have learned more if people weren't so nasty. Maybe at our next potluck we should have more protein and less sugar. Warren Hagstrom RECENT PROGRAMS July 6, under threatening skies, about 25 Prairie folks enjoyed a picnic at the Hoyt Park shelter. A grand rush to the table occurred when Jean Matos and Doleta Chapru delivered ice cream and chocolate cake, the flavor requested by the Clawson children. It rained, as Jack Jallings predicted, but remained pleasant inside the shelter. Kids had fun watching Bob Park stoke a reluctant charcoal grill. On July 13 Sarah Lord, Nancy Schraufnagel, Pat Watkins, and Mary Mullen reported on issues and good times at the UU General Assembly. The Assembly chose criminal justice as this year's adult education focus. First-timer Sarah Lord invigorated us all with her enthusiasm and knowledge of the issues. Sarah attended sessions with other young adults. (When elders invited to their sessions didn't come, one of the young adults said, in effect, "We will be the leaders.")
