2 News from District President By Harriet Creswell, President, Greenwood District UMW The Greenwood District units continue to do good work that shows faith, hope, and love in action. It is remarkable to see what the women of the Greenwood District are accomplishing in On March 10, our Day Apart was held at Zion in Prosperity. The theme was Freely Give. Co-Presidents Marcia Miller and Janie Morris and all the ladies of Zion were gracious hostesses. The breakfast food was delicious, the accommodations were more than satisfactory, and the overall atmosphere was perfect. Our speaker was Kevin Long, Administrator of Wallace Family Life Center. He told us about some of the great work being done at the center and some of their needs. Our offering of more than $600 will be used to help purchase a new much-needed bus for the center. Attendance at this year s Day Apart was 55; I think everyone who attended was inspired. On April 27 and 28, I attended the Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska. Lake Junaluska is always special, and this year was no exception. The weather was perfect, and the lake was beautiful. The Greenwood District was represented by 46 members. Everyone who attended received a blessing from the speakers and music. Reverend Fran Elrod was our speaker for each session, with Reverend Ann Hoyt and Reverend Rhonda Smith leading the music. The theme of It s All About Grace was timely and relevant. Every attendee left Lake Junaluska with a new spirit. We in the Greenwood District are at a critical time. Some units are dissolving, officers are difficult to find, and interest in activities seems to be declining. We are in need of several officers for The Nominating Committee is hard at work searching for officers. All our members should consider serving the Greenwood District in leadership roles. Be in prayer for our Greenwood District United Methodist Women. We are the heart of the United Methodist Church! Once again, thanks for all you do for United Methodist Women. Harriet News from District Vice President By Carol Marse, Vice President, Greenwood District UMW What a swift year this has been--a busy one, though! I would like to thank the ladies of Central UMC in Newberry and the ladies of Zion UMC (my church) for hosting events in The leadership training at Central was inspiring and informative; the refreshments were delicious! The District Day Apart at Zion was also an inspirational event, and the Greenwood District ladies showed great generosity to the Wallace Family Life Center. Again, the food was wonderful!! Thank all of you for your hard work this year! We look forward to our next event: the Annual Meeting at Wightman United Methodist Church in Prosperity on September 22, President Rosemary Bowers is already hard at work preparing for the Annual Meeting. Events for 2019 include the District Officer Training Session at Broad Street UMC in Clinton on January 26, 2019 and the District Day Apart in March of 2019 at Troy UMC. Have a wonderful and restful summer! - Carol Page 2 - June, 2018 News A Plenty

12 News from Greenwood District Treasurer By Marcia Miller Hello UMW Ladies! I would like to introduce myself as your New District Treasurer. When I opened the program book during the September 2017 District meeting, the office of Treasurer had not been filled. I looked at my sister, and said, is this a sign? My friends from Wightman nominated me, and here I am. The UMW has been an important part of my life since 1980, holding offices of President and Treasurer over the years at Zion United Methodist in Prosperity. Remember that your goal is to be a 5 Star Unit with a Gold Seal. As of today, I have received mission gifts from 24 churches. We still have a ways to go to meet our District Pledge, so remember to get your remittance reports in by August 24 th to receive your certificates at our District Meeting on September 22 nd. Pledges for 2019 will need to be presented that day. Also, I have a great supply of very nice Gift in Mission and Gift in Memory cards. For each $5 donation, I will mail one card back to your Treasurer that can be sent to honor someone special. If you have questions concerning the requirements for a certificate, feel free to contact me. I have met many wonderful ladies that together make our Greenwood District a success. My hope and prayer is that together we can fulfill The Purpose of The United Methodist Women. Most sincerely, Marcia H. Miller Below: Participants enjoyed the fellowship, refreshments, and educational experience of this year s District Day Apart. Page 12 - June, 2018 News A Plenty
13 Program Resources New By Barbara Gates, Coordinator of Program Resources It is almost summer and if you are planning a vacation, it is the perfect time to select a few books from your UMW library shelf to tuck into your suitcase. Remember that the 2013 books will be off the program after this year so be sure to read those that interest you. REMINDERS: To all readers--be sure to turn in your Program form of completed books to your unit leaders by August 15th. To unit leaders--please collect all Program forms and send them to me by August 20th. Mail them to me at Barbara Gates, 501 Cothran Avenue, Greenwood, SC If you have any questions about this just call me at Something new... I would like to give special recognition to any reader who has moved up to the next higher reading plan. For example, if you did Plan I (5 books read) last year and moved into Plan II (10 books read) this year, or last year did Plan II( 10 books) and did Plan III (15 books) this year, or ANY move upward to a higher plan, I would like to spread the good news!! When you are ready to turn in your reading form to your unit leader by August 15th, simply attach a note to this year's reading plan sheet telling me of your change. Share your idea with us Many units read books in small groups. If you have found an interesting way to read our books in a group, would you be willing to share with us how you do it? We all could use fresh ideas!!! Send ideas and I will share them in this publication. 2. The Purpose of the UMW Reading Program is to encourage members to think critically about current issues through an annual selection of member-reviewed books. The Reading Program is a study opportunity, but it should also lead to action. The following actions we are encouraged to do are as follows: --Expand understanding of and participation in God's mission. --Increase sensitivity to all human beings-their needs, interests, and concerns. --Encourage critical thinking about issues facing humanity today. --Grow in understanding of Scripture as it relates to Christian faith in contemporary life. --Enhance self-knowledge and act from that knowledge. --Strengthen involvement in local and global Christian mission. Please let me know if a particular book led you to one of these 6 actions and what you did or thought about. I think it would be interesting for us to read how others have been moved by a book to Action! Send your story to me at the address above. I would like to share them in the December issue of News-A-Plenty. Have a great summer!! Barbara Page 13 - June, 2018 News A Plenty
