1 Fort Dearborn Moose Legion # 33 The Moose Legionnaire Waves Vol. IV Issue 1 Summer 2007 YOUNGSTERS ENJOY VACATIONS AT MOOSEHEART CAMP ROSS Mooseheart Camp Ross, a woodland paradise located near Mount Morris in northwestern Illinois, provides summer camping and recreation facilities for more than 250 Mooseheart children during each summer vacation. The 150-acre woodland, traversed by Pine Creek, provides an ideal setting for a summer camp. It was made possible when 86 acres were donated to the Moose for a summer camp by Past Supreme Governor Harold Ross and his wife, Dorothy. Camp Ross (continued from page 1) Children are housed in six rustic wooden cabins, each with a capacity for eight campers. In addition, there is a swimming pool with shower house, director's cabin, recreation building, a wintersummer cabin and four utility buildings. With the exception of the dining and recreation building, and the Walter Ketz Memorial Chapel, which was financed by the Mooseheart Alumni Association, all of the buildings and the camp's continuous operation are financed exclusively by the Moose Legion. The camp has been in operation since the summer of A camp director supervises the camp while it is in operation during the summer. He is assisted by two full-time recreational directors and six high school counselors during each camp period. An average day at camp is spent swimming, playing organized games, going on nature hikes, and studying arts and crafts. Campfire programs are held three evenings each week, and each group of campers is taken on an overnight expedition. Thanks to extensive funding from the Moose Legion, Camp Ross was winterized in the 1990s to enable large groups of students to enjoy a first-rate sledding hill, snowmobile trails, ice skating, and a heated central dormitory. On Sunday, May 27th we held a Moose Legion Celebration at Chicago Heights 828.

They know that participating in Moose Legion affairs and signing up new Moose Legionnaires in their Lodge is an important ingredient to that recipe.

On Sunday, May 27th we held a Moose Legion Celebration at Chicago Heights 828. The new Administrator, Wally Paris and Moose Legion Committee Chairman, Steve Myles, are determined to make Chicago Heights Lodge a huge success story. They know that participating in Moose Legion affairs and signing up new Moose Legionnaires in their Lodge is an important ingredient to that recipe. They have recently tackled the daunting task of replacing their roof in an effort to let their membership know that they mean business. This year we are going to take advantage of Southwest Moose Family Center 44 s new location just 2 blocks away and we will be having lunch there. We are hoping that thru the generosity of the members of Fort Dearborn 33 Moose Legion we can open this up to a Greater number of students that ever. For just $20.00 (a $25.00 value) you too can sponsor a student to join us on October 20, 2007 for this outing and, if we receive more sponsors than students that can attend that day, gift certificates that can be used by the School as rewards for the Students to use at The Enchanted Castle (same ownership) in near by Aurora Illinois. If you are interested in participating in this program please send your response a.s.a.p. 5 Page 12 Annual Corn Boil at Mooseheart Saturday, August 4th, 2007 If you have never been to Mooseheart, you should take advantage of this opportunity to meet the Children we support. All members and their families are welcome. The Illinois Moose Association s First District puts out a fine spread for the kids and Moose administrators and parents. A picnic is planned on the lake located at Mooseheart. There is a pavilion and a cottage in the event it rains. Free hot dogs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, pop, and ice cream is featured. There are also games for the children. Mooseheart, The Child City, is a realized dream of its founder, James J. Davis. Sprawling over 1000 acres of Illinois prairie, it features more than a hundred buildings, a beautiful Lake and is home to many children, ranging from infancy through high school. Register for the IMA State Convention today! August 16th - 19th at St. Louis Airport Marriot Illinois Day at Mooseheart Saturday, September 8 th, 2007 We are fortunate we are so close to Mooseheart. You should see where our children at Mooseheart live and go to school. The Gift Shop will be open if you wish to purchase Moose clothing, regalia and memorabilia. You must see the Baby Village, the Moose Museum, the Illinois House and the House of God. Morton Grove Moose Family Center charters a school bus to take us there at no cost to you. The bus will leave their lodge at 9:00 A.M. sharp and will return approximately 5:00 P.M. We have a sign-up sheet in the social quarters or call (847) if you are interested in going to Mooseheart on this informative and eventful day. Free Transportation, Food, Refreshments and Bingo are provided. Page 5 Summer 2007 Letter from the President I am very proud to have been elected as your new President of Fort Dearborn # 33 Moose Legion. I can only hope that I do not let you down. I am grateful to have a board of directors that I know is very capable and willing to fulfill their obligations with pride, diligence and dedication. The first thing on my agenda is to thank my predecessor Past President Todd Kramer for a job well done. I can only hope that I can maintain or improve upon his momentum to put Fort Dearborn Moose Legion # 33 back on the map. I especially want to thank him for nominating me for the office of president and promising me his full support in the upcoming year. I thank him with my heart and hope to make all of you feel Great to be an Illinois Moose Legionnaire. On May 5th I attended the first Moose Legion Celebration at Camp Ross. I am very pleased with our attendance. We had Moose Legionnaires representing five of our seven lodges. We hope to make this an annual event with 100% participation and supply several candidates from Fort Dearborn # 33. I always wanted to see Camp Ross and this was a perfect opportunity to see it in all it s glory. We all had a great afternoon. We only wish more of you could have enjoyed it and to see what our efforts can produce. We are reinstating quarterly Moose Legion Ceremonials for February, May, August and November The May 2008 special event will be held at Camp Ross in conjunction with other Moose Legions throughout Illinois. Finally, I would like remind you about our Annual Family Picnic at Prospect Lodge # 660 on Saturday, June 23rd, Prospect 660 is a great location to have a picnic. They offer many outdoor amenities for your enjoyment and for a wonderful afternoon with friends and family. The annual picnic is our way of saying Thank You to our fellow Moose Legion Members for supporting us and giving them an opportunity to introduce their fellow Moose members to the Degree of Service. Celebrate the Moose Legion and our efforts by joining us. The morning will be filled with Information, Promotion, Pride, Recognition and Fun. The afternoon and evening will be spent at Moosehaven with a Carnival, Picnic and Fireworks. Be sure to make reservations before hand. Third Annual Fort Dearborn Moose Legion # 33 Kane County Cougar Game scheduled for July 5th It is that time of year again, when we get in to full swing. The third annual Kane County Cougar Game for the children at Mooseheart is scheduled for Thursday, July 5th, Although all 75 tickets we purchased are spoken for, you can buy tickets at the box office or online at any time. Just let them know you are with the Mooseheart party and they will direct you. Come out and have some fun and throw some bags Or just watch and enjoy a bar-b-q sandwich!! Doors open 12:00 tournament starts 12:30 Menu : Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, and Brats With all the trimmings, for $2.00 each. Sign up at the door Entrance fee for teams are: Adult team - $20.00* Youth team 16 and under - $10.00* Mix team adult / youth - $15.00* A sandwich is included with your entrance fee. The tournament will be a single elimination. All teams must have at least one member of The Loyal Order of Moose or Women of the Moose. Youth teams must have a sponsor from either the Loyal Order of Moose or Women of the Moose. The prize structure will be dependant of the number of team participating! Please note : there is a Moose Legion Breakfast at River Park 2578 in the morning at 8:30 AM
