1 CHURCH LEADERSHIP ROSTER FOR April 2013 COVENANT BETWEEN PASTOR AND CHARGE... 3 YOUTH GROUP HAPPENINGS IN APRIL... 3, 4 Two Churches One Gospel A NEWSLETTER FOR TWO PILGRIM CONGREGATIONS DOING OUR BEST TO FOLLOW JESUS IN A SPIRIT OF LOVE, JOY AND PEACE A Few Thoughts From Steve A few years ago I stumbled upon something that reminded me just how simple and beautiful church life can be: a whimsical little song written by an artist in the UK on the occasion of a pastor's retirement. The song is called In An English Country Village, and the first line asks the question: How many people does it take to run a church..? We waste a great deal of time in the church complaining about things that don't go well, griping when we don't get our way, nursing old grievances and lamenting well-intentioned plans that never came to fruition. I'm as guilty as anybody of all these things, but every now and then something happens that helps me even if just for a fleeting moment to put everything in perspective. In those gracious moments I see the church as a kind of improvised dance; sometimes we stumble and cause others to stumble, sometimes we step on toes, but sometimes (when we're most in tune with Jesus) we flow together with such grace and ease and sheer delight. As you read through this newsletter, see if you can discern a little of the improvised dance that makes these two churches beautiful to behold and even more beautiful to be part of. And as the Lenten journey of Wilderness and Cross give way to a festive Easter Jig, take time to give thanks for each other...and for the Lord of the Dance, whose music heals us and restores us and makes us together something really quite beautiful to behold. Here's a portion of the song: Chorus: How many people does it take to run a Church In an English country village? The vicar just can't manage if we leave him in the lurch In an English country village. Someone to sweep the floors up, someone to clean the windows. Two to light the candles, ten to ring the bells. Two to play the organ, four to do the flowers And a team to make the tea and cakes which we all deserve. The graveyard grass wants cutting, the choir needs conducting, The Christingle Service won't organize itself. There's weddings to be planned and christenings at hand, Thank Heaven someone's always there to give a little help. The Sunday School has teachers, the Newsletter needs features. Who collects the hymnals and books out of the Church hall? Who does all those things... that we haven't time to sing? And who meets the Bishop, when he comes to call?

3 Page 3 Presented at the Special Charge Conference held on March 19, COVENANT BETWEEN THE PASTOR AND THE CHARGE In recognition of our newly formed Charge, the and the congregations of Mountain Home United Methodist Church and Sherwood United Methodist Church desire to acknowledge the newness of the relationship, and support and guide each other as we learn the meaning of our new roles in relation to each other. We accept and embrace our new fellowship as a Gift from God, and we forge this Covenant in honor of that Gift to us. Above all, the and the The has been sent here to encourage unity between our two congregations while honoring the unique gifts and passions that each congregation brings to the relationship. In recognition of this, the Covenants to be the shepherd for the Charge, guiding the Charge as a compassionate teacher, caregiver, and truth-teller. The will preach and teach the Gospel with passion and depth (Word), joyously and graciously offer the Sacraments (Sacrament), engage and be engaged by the wider parish community (Service), and equip the members of both congregations to faithfully administer the affairs of the church (Order). The will nurture the Charge and be ever vigilant in the parish, especially seeking out the sick, the grieving, the hurt, and all who are in need. Charge Covenant with each other to be encouraging, open, forgiving and patient, and to honor God s path for our journey together. The Charge Covenants to support the in the work of encouraging unity between the two congregations. The Charge will honor the s individual gifts, abilities and passions, recognizing that God works through each of us in our own special way. Understanding that the role of the shepherd requires much time for intentional study and prayer, and that the work of a can be isolating, as well as physically and emotionally draining, the Charge affirms the s need for regular Sabbath time, whether that time be for rest, enjoyment, renewal or education. The Charge will respect and support the s family, providing them with a sense of privacy, security, acceptance and belonging. Above all, the and the Charge Covenant with each other to be encouraging, open, forgiving and patient, and to honor God s path for our journey COVENANT BETWEEN MOUNTAIN HOME UNITED METHODIST AND SHERWOOD UNITED METHODIST CHURCHES In recognition of the newly forged relationship between Mountain Home United Methodist Church and Sherwood United Methodist Church, we, the congregations of these two churches, receive our new relationship as a Gift in Christ, and we form this Covenant with each other to honor the beginnings of our journey together. Through this Covenant, We acknowledge that both of our churches share in a common faith, and a common richness in traditions of spirituality, liturgy and service. We rejoice in our diversity from which we may mutually benefit as we continue to develop our individual spiritual Gifts. We honor and embrace Mountain Home s special Gift of Nurturing, and Sherwood s special Gift of Outreach. We acknowledge that we can learn from each other and work together to make the Gospel shine brighter within our community We Covenant to share each other s hopes, fears, joys, pains, difficulties and successes, and we acknowledge that in taking this journey together, we bear witness to the ever widening circle of Grace, which is the Kingdom of God.

4 Page 4 M t H o m e Y o u t h G r o u p N e w s Plans for April No regular youth group meetings planned as we focus all our effort on our Weekend of Service (WOS) with the Sierra Project. Weekend of Service April 26,27,28 Additional details will be sent before the trip exact times, etc. But this should give you lots of information. We just roasted marshmallows in our outdoor fireplace on a beautiful Sunday evening. We made S mores and munched on brownies with Robbie Frederiksen, our host leader for our Weekend of Service. He is a student at George Fox and a youth leader at the church where we will stay for the weekend. The youth are pumped and the leaders are ready to go and make a difference together! The youth will be accompanied by Connie, Kelly and Larry and we will stay at the Fremont United Methodist Church in NE Portland. We will be working on improving the housing conditions at Dignity Village in NE Portland and we will also be focusing our efforts on food for the hungry as well. From Sierra Service Project s website: SSP's exciting Weekend of Service program is now taking place in three different cities. Like our summer projects, these weekends combine fun fellowship with youth from other youth groups with a challenging, hands-on service project and a strong focus on understanding how we can all live out our faith in the world around us. Each weekend starts on Friday evening and ends on Sunday afternoon. We will partner with different local organizations to Preparation needed for youth attending the trip: DUE March 31 st : Youth to turn in at least their $50 deposit for each youth (can make checks payable to MT Home (note what it is for Youth group deposit to WOS). Total cost of the weekend is $95.00 per youth/adult. Scholarship money is available please contact Connie or Kelly if you have a need. IF you have questions, please contact Connie ( ) cjjacot@gmail.com or Kelly ( )kellyfreuler@gmail.com For more information on the Sierra Service Project Weekend of Service: provide much-needed hands-on service work.
