Use this Table of Contents to supplement other teaching texts. There are several publishing companies that carry wonderful books about American history. A History of US. The New Nation by Joy Hakim carried by Common Sense Press is an excellent text to compliment this book. Diana Waring.. History Alive Publications has excellent materials for studying history. Greenleaf Publications also carries an array of American history materials that work well. Bob Jones University and Abeka carry primary texts that complement this study. 2 Introduction In introducing this book on American Historv Through Art, I want to say that this subject is vast and comprehensive. One book would not be adequate to cover the topic in detail. I will begin by mentioning several artists that you will want to study as you are studying periods of American History. I have several mentioned in the following pages with corresponding lessons, but I want to mention some that you can research yourself if you choose too. The following pictures with corresponding lessons can be found in Visual Manna Complete Art Curriculum. You can also look these artists up in reference books or an encyclopedia. Edward Hicks is a wonderful American artist whose picture The Peaceable Kingdom shows a peaceful meeting between the settlers and the Indians. Fur Traders on the Missouri by George Caleb Bingham shows us life on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers in the mid 1800 s. Albert Bierdstadt s The Rocky Mountains show us what the west was like at the time of Lewis and Clark. The Robie House by Frank Lloyd Wright shows us America s greatest architect. Portrait of the Arh st s Mother by Wliistler, The Tom Hat by Thomas Sully, and The Banjo Lesson by Tanner are all wonderful American portraits. We also see The Bronco Buster by the great western artist Remington. In Visual Manna 11, we see The Little Spaniard by George Catlin, a great artist who concentrated on showing the lifestyle and wonder of the American Indian. We also have Breezing Up by Winslow Homer, the great American seascape artist. Visual Manna I also has a lesson called Pottery that would make a good study because of the Indian pottery that is so much a part of our heritage. Currier and Ives were a lithography firm that published many 19th century prints showing the manner, people, and general personality of the time. Enjoy studying all these marvelous American artists! 2

3 America! She has inspired melodies that stir our hearts - "From the oceans, to the prairies, to the mountains white with snow..." "O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave..." "This land is your land, this land is my land..." "Sweet land of liberty, of Thee I sing..." America! She has produced poetry that touches the soul - "Listen, my children, and you shall hear of the midnight ride of Paul Revere..." "...Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to bmthe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!" "Behind him lay the gray Azores, Behind the Gates of Hercules; Before him not the ghost of shores, Before him only shoreless seas. The good mate said "Now must we pray, For lo! the very stars are gone. Brave Admid, speak; what shall I say?" "Why, say, 'Sail on! sail on! and on!'" America! She has yielded a harvest of speeches that quicken our spirits - "I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death?" "I only regret that I have but one life to iose for my country." "Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new nation, coceived in liberty, and dedicated tu the proposition that all men are created equal... " America! The music, the literature, the art of America express the unique and precious heritage of our country. Let us not be content to merely know: the names - Columbus, Washinwn, Lincoln; the dates -1492,1776,1861; the places - Plymouth Rock, Boston Harbor, Gettysbug; but let us strive to comprehend the reasons behind them. Let us learn the why's and the wherefore's, the heart and soul of our nation, the creative expression which will transport us from a dull knowing to a rich comprehension. America! 6 , George Washington Gilbert Stuart--The Great Portrait Artist We can thank Gilbert Stuart for giving us wonderful portraits of our founding fathers. There were no cameras, and he had that special gift of capturing the spirit of a person on canvas. Some artists can do pictures of people, but they seem to miss that certain something that brings the canvas to life and really captures the essence of a person, but Gilbert Stuart has over 1000 portraits to his credit and each is a masterpiece portrait. He painted George Washing ton, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and James Madison, just to name a few. Did he have to work and study to achieve this high degree of technical expertise? He was born in Rhode Island, but went to England in 1775 to study under the master artist Benjamin West. In England, he was greatly influenced by Thomas Gainsborough and Joshua Reynolds. Here is one of his well know portraits. Use the grid to draw your own picture of George Washington. Now try to draw him freehand, just using Your sight to get the proportion correct.
