2 Discover / Explore / Experience WHAT S ON OFFER AT THE JEWISH MUSEUM Welcome from the Learning Team Each year we welcome over 16,500 student school visits to the museum. Our Learning Team create safe spaces for your students to challenge perspectives, advocate for diversity and build relationships by being experiential, inclusive and collections focused. Schools came from our local London boroughs including Camden, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Lambeth and from as far as Cardiff and Kent! Our award-winning workshops are designed for students to gain knowledge and understanding about Judaism as a living faith and as part of a long cultural and historical heritage. We inspire students to look at the world from a different point of view. The Jewish Museum encourages students to use handling objects within our interactive workshops to support creative and critical thinking. Our pupils loved their visit to the museum. Children from all faiths were engaged and excited in the workshop and it has opened up many opportunities for discussion back in the classroom. 4 Discover / Explore / Experience DISCOVERING JUDAISM Discovering Judaism is a series of hands-on, interactive, multi-sensory workshops designed to encourage pupils to learn about the vibrancy of Jewish religion and culture today. During workshops students handle artefacts and use the displays in the Judaism: A Living Faith gallery to explore religious life through contemporary films, engaging displays and ritual objects from our nationally significant collections. Totally Torah Discover why the Torah is central to Jewish life, how it is looked after and celebrated. Find out fascinating facts about the Torah, how many commandments there are and how they are a source of guidance in everyday life. Explore the many stories in the Torah and the enduring craft of the Sofer (scribe). Investigate the Torah as a sacred object as well as a handcrafted artefact, see Torah scrolls from around the world and let the magnificent 17th Century Synagogue Ark in the gallery reveal its secret history. Experience handling artefacts that are used to make a Torah, Yads (pointers) and Etz Chayim (Torah rollers). Students will have a go at being a scribe using a quill and ink to write letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Explore Shabbat rituals and traditions and the symbolism of the artefacts adorning the Shabbat table. Experience how a family prepares for Shabbat and learn about Havdalah, the ceremony marking the end of the Sabbath day. Taste challah (traditional plaited bread) and kosher grape juice and make a candle or candlestick holder to take back to school. 5 Key Stage: Early Years, 1 and 2 Festival Focus: Illuminating Hanukah Festival Focus: Passover: Why is this Night Different? Festival Focus: Journey Through the Jewish Year Discover the story of Judah and the Macabees and the miracle of Hanukah. Students will learn about the importance of home in Judaism when celebrating this festival. Explore the bravery of Judah and his brothers and investigate the importance of light in Judaism. Students will have the opportunity to handle objects including different types of Hanukah lamps. Experience the taste of Hanukah with doughnuts and play the traditional Hanukah game of dreidl (spinning top). Students will also make a candle to take back to school. Key Stage: Early Years, 1 and 2 Curriculum Keywords: Festival Foods, Hanukah, Hanukiah, Dreidl, Home, Judah, Maccabees, Miracle Discover the story of the Exodus from Egypt through storytelling. Explore the symbolism of the Seder plate and the various customs relating to this central festival. Learn why Jewish people eat matzah (unleavened bread) during the week of Passover and why Seder night is different. Experience the tastes of Passover. Students will be encouraged to taste the foods eaten during Passover and on Seder night to help sensory learning of the story and its importance in Judaism. Key Stage: 1 and 2 Curriculum Keywords: Passover, Pesach, Seder, Haggadah, Hametz, Moses, Plagues, Pharaoh, Symbolism The visit acted as a starting point. It has been great to see the students excited this will make the classroom learning much easier! Year 4 Teacher, Haringey For our children not of Jewish faith it was most rewarding for them to get the opportunity to touch, smell, see and hear. The workshop was ideal for the opportunity to have discussions. Year 5 Teacher, Lambeth Discover the cultural and religious importance and practices of key Jewish festivals: Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Passover and Hanukah. Explore the Jewish calendar through food. Students are invited to a dynamic, sensory learning session encouraging them to make connections between taste and symbolism. Foods include, kosher grape juice, apple and honey, doughnuts, parsley and matzah. Experience how Jewish people celebrate festivals in synagogue and at home through food, traditions, and childrens games. 6 Discover / Explore / Experience EXPLORING HISTORY Exploring History is a programme of object-based interactive workshops designed to engage students with the history of Jewish religion and culture in Britain. During workshops students handle artefacts and archival documents, and spend guided time in the History: A British Story gallery exploring the rich and diverse history of British Jews. Workshops encourage pupils to understand the complexity of people s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies, and relationships between different groups. The children were completely fascinated by the people they investigated and thought deeply about the minority aspect of their lives. The workshop was most appropriate and challenging in the most positive sense. Year 6 Teacher, Barnet 6 Exploring History

7 Key Stage: 2 Jewish EastEnders: A Victorian Story Discover the stories of real Jewish families who migrated to London s changing East End during the Victorian era and the challenges they faced embarking on their new lives in Britain. Explore changing identities through object-handling, archival documents and photographs. Using these artefacts students will discover the impact of living in a new and diverse environment. Experience what life was like at the turn of the 20th century in London s Jewish East End. Using historical enquiry skills students will be encouraged to consider the challenges faced by immigrants into Britain and the positive impact they can make. Key Stage: 2 Curriculum Keywords: Great Migration, East End, Immigration, Census, Yiddish, Archives, Identity, Nationality First World War: Remember Me Discover the personal stories of four British-born Jewish men and women who signed up to serve in the First World War. Through object and document handling students will gain a deeper insight into Jewish identity on the Front Line. Explore the implications of being part of a minority community whilst serving on the Front and find out more about the lives of those who signed up. Experience the work of a museum curator as students select objects for a mini exhibition on remembrance focusing on one individual for their display. Students will be encouraged to reflect on remembrance in a Jewish, national and local context. Key Stage: 2 Curriculum Keywords: Synagogue, Rabbi, Ark, Torah, Tallit, Siddur, Trench, Camouflage, Chaplain, Remembrance, WWI, Identity Migration: Defining Journeys Discover some of the reasons why many Jewish people left their homes to create new lives in Britain between 1850 and 1950, and from where we get our ideas about migration. Explore the experiences of Jewish migrants in Britain through personal objects and documents which illustrate the challenges and rewards of making difficult journeys. Reflect on Britain s past reactions to Jewish immigration and discuss what message students would like to send to people moving to Britain today. 8 Discover / Explore / Reflect INVESTIGATING THE HOLOCAUST Our sensitive and thought-provoking workshops for years 5 and 6 focus on a range of artefacts from our permanent and handling collections. Using these artefacts and the testimony of those rescued from Nazi-occupied Europe, students will build on their prior knowledge of life in Europe in the run-up to the outbreak of World War II. In particular workshops focus on the story of the Kindertransport, the rescue of 10,000 unaccompanied child refugees who came to Britain in All sessions are led by our highly experienced team of Holocaust experts who are specially trained to deal with the delivery of this sensitive topic to young children. Bea s talk was appropriately pitched for 12 year olds. It was a real privilege for our students to hear a Kindertransport refugee and to ask her personal questions. 9 Key Stage: 2 Every Object Tells a Story Discover the story of a spice box that was hidden in Germany and the impact Nazi rule had on one family. A tale of loss, courage, rescue and faith. Explore artefacts to contextualise both a historical understanding of what life was like in Nazi-occupied Europe and the Jewish tradition of Shabbat and Havdalah. Reflect on the impact of the Kindertransport using authentic documents, paintings and objects to explore key themes of identity, rescue and tolerance. Key Stage: 2 Curriculum Keywords: Kindertransport, WWII, Nazi Germany, Artefact, Anti-Jewish Laws, Night of Broken Glass, Shabbat, Havdallah, Spice Box A Child s Journey Discover the impact of the Holocaust from one person s story. Students will have the unique opportunity to meet and hear first hand from a child rescued from Nazi-occupied Europe. How did they settle in Britain and what happened to the family they left behind? Explore the story of one family to gain a deeper understanding of what life was like in Nazi-occupied Europe and the sacrifices that were often made in the name of rescue. Reflect on the personal narrative and have the unique opportunity to ask questions and engage with an eye witness. This is an encounter that will stay with you and your students forever. Key Stage: 2 Curriculum Keywords: Kindertransport, Nationality, Identity, Nazism Please note: We request that your students are well acquainted with the topic before meeting a speaker so they can gain the most from this unique experience. We strongly recommend students take part in the Every Object Tells a Story workshop before meeting a survivor. If this is not possible we will enquire about work already being done in school on the topic. Please also note that our speakers prefer to speak to groups of 25 students plus. 10 Discover / Explore / Experience REVEALING ARTS The Jewish Museum is filled with treasures including one of the finest collections of Jewish ceremonial art and textiles. These artefacts reflect the fabric of Jewish life both in the home and synagogue. These new Early Years and Key Stage 1 workshops are a fun and creative introduction for students to get to know the objects in the museum whilst making links with Jewish religion, history and culture. 10 Revealing Arts

11 Key Stage: Early Years and 1 Stories from the Torah: Noah and the Ark Discover the story of Noah and the Ark in this fun-filled, hands-on workshop especially designed for Early Years and Key Stage 1 pupils. Explore the Torah, the Five Books of Moses, through object-handling, drama and dressing up. Pupils are encouraged to discover our stunning collection of ritual objects with an I-Spy trail looking for animals of the Ark. Pupils will make animal masks and act out the story together. Experience a fun first workshop at the Jewish Museum using a familiar story. Key Stage: Early Years and Key Stage 1 Curriculum Keywords: Noah, Torah, Ark, Special Stories and People Session length: 90 minutes Let s Tell a Story Discover the unique stories behind the objects in the museum in small groups using our specially designed resources for younger years. Explore creating short stories based on selected museum objects using high-frequency words. Educators will stimulate imagination and creativity and encourage pupils to develop their own stories on the objects they find. Experience sharing these creative stories as a group in a fun, first workshop at the museum. The bags ( 3.60 per bag) include a range of items from our gift shop such as: Crazy Putty Bendy Pencil Button Badge Voucher to return to the Jewish Museum with your family Bags must be pre-ordered at least two weeks in advance to ensure that they are ready for you at the end of your session. The cost of bags can either be included in your invoice or paid for on the day but must always be ordered in advance. Please contact the Learning Assistant if you would like to place an order. Designs on Britain 19 October April 2018 Discover how much of the most iconic British design of the period was produced by immigrants to this country. Don t miss iconic posters for London Underground, the General Post Office and the War Office created by designers including Dorrit Dekk, FHK Henrion and Hans Schleger. Hasidim 10 May October 2018 This exhibition sheds light on the culture and life of the UK s community of Hasidic Jews. We have run successful teachers events around topics such as Teaching Judaism for the First Time, Holocaust Memorial Day and Making the Most from our Online Resources and we continue to support teachers with curriculum changes.
