1 OLD D R. D A V E S M I T H MAKE TODAY COUNT SYLLABUS AND SCHEDULE COURSE DESCRIPTION Long before Jesus came to earth, God began to get the world ready by calling Abraham and his descendants, the people of Israel. He inspired the prophets to show them the way of righteousness and to point them in the direction of Christ. He gave Israel the Law to foreshadow the good things to come in Christ. God inspired the Old Testament not only to get his people ready for Jesus, but to speak to us as God's people even today. DATES Onsite portion is September 23-24, 2016 (10 hours at 12Stone) Online portion is September 26 - November 20, 2016 (8 weeks) GOALS Together, we will become familiar with the Big Picture of the Old Testament. This includes major people, places and biblical themes. Together, we will be able to converse with others about the world and culture of the Old Testament. This will put us in much closer contact with the people of the text and the Lord as He is revealed. Plus, you will begin talking with one another about this incredible story. Together, we will share about personal life transformations that occur from our encounter with the Old Testament. TEXTBOOKS The Bible (all versions welcome) Stephen J. Lennox, God s Story Revealed (Indianapolis: Wesleyan Publishing House, 2009). NOTE: Call in book orders to Wesleyan Publishing House , who mention Taking this Course through 12Stone Church will qualify for 30% off WPH published books, 20% off other books. Not valid with on-line orders, but inventory is viewable at wphonline.com. REQUIREMENTS 1. PRE-COURSE WORK (200/1000) Read: Chapters 1-5 in God s Story Revealed. Submit Questions from the Introductory Reading: Prior to coming to class, send me a list of ten questions you have about the material you read in God's Story Revealed in preparation for this class. Post these questions to me through the Questions from the Introductory Reading link in the Pre-Course Work folder. Your questions should make it clear that you have carefully read the assigned material. The professor will try to incorporate many of the questions into our time together on Friday and Saturday. Remember, asking good questions is more an art of inquiry than a science of right or wrong. A good question sets the trajectory of a discussion. Let s serve one another by asking questions that the Lord really wants us to address in our limited time together. 1
2 2. READING THE OLD (200/1000) Nothing replaces your encounter with the Living Biblical text. Thus, by the end of the class, I will ask you to submit a reading log indicating how much of the assigned passages from the Old Testament you have read. As you finish each passage, write down the book and the date you finished reading it. 3. CLASS DISCUSSIONS AND ON-LINE ASSIGNMENTS (600/1000) For the 8 online weeks of the class, we will have discussions over readings and videos. Full participation consists of: 1. Answer one of the ques+ons at the end of the reading, or ask one ques+on of your own about this material and a8empt to answer according to textbook material and/or Biblical text. Grading will be based upon a thoughaul ques+on and a probing answer. Try to also dig into the issue What are the implica+ons of the discovery of this truth? 2. Addi+onally, post at least 1 response to the comments of other students. It s always important to be grace-filled in your response. 3. Each week I will ask you to turn a truth into a teaching moment. Thus, share something you have learned with a family member, a co-worker, a Church friend, or even someone you have been praying for that needs to learn about The Lord. Let s move each week from being a student into becoming a teacher. The flow of discussion online will be continued discussion at least through Sunday night at midnight, EST. ONSITE SCHEDULE 1. Remember to ask, What are the As your final assignment this week, please write and post a 200 word summary of what you have learned about God's character and redemptive plan from your study of the Old Testament and how this has impacted your spiritual life. Submit your Final Assignment and Reading Log to me electronically by Nov. 20, COURSE GRADE 100 points Pre-Course Work 200 points Bible Reading 600 points Class Discussion (Onsite & Online) SCALE A C A C B D B D B- 599 or below F C+ CLASS ATTENDANCE On-Site: Because the onsite time is a compressed experience, it is important to be there for the entire 10 hours at 12Stone. A person loses 50 points from the final grade for any hour absent from the onsite time. On-Line: For the online portion, a person loses 100 points from the final grade for any online week absence (meaning no participation in discussion during the week). 12Stone Church and other lay leader enrollees who are absent from online participation 4 weeks or more will be automatically withdrawn from the course. District Extension Course enrollees who are absent from online participation 2 weeks or more will be automatically withdrawn from the course. LATE POLICY For pre-course work, the student will lose 50 points if the assignment is not done by the beginning of class. Your initial posts online each week are due by Thursday nights at midnight EST (10 points off if late) and then your additional 1 comment should be posted by Sunday nights at midnight EST (10 points off for late comments). 4
5 WITHDRAWAL FROM COURSE Automatic Withdrawal: 12Stone Church or other lay leader enrollees who are absent from online participation 4 total weeks or more will be automatically withdrawn from the course. District Extension Course enrollees who are absent from online participation 2 weeks or more will be automatically withdrawn. Voluntary Withdrawal: Students may also voluntarily ask to be withdrawn from the class at any time, as long as they do so before the final online week. 5
