1 I. Introduction and review Week #6 God s Leadership Boot Camp - Part V First Presented: August 24, 2014 A. Professional football teams all have a training camp for six or seven weeks 1. But that is proceeded by mini camps 2. And by OTA s [organized team activities] B. MLB allows its team to hold a spring training time every year C. In each of those leagues, training camp or spring training is the most important, for those players who are just beginning their careers, that is the rookies D. In God s scheme of things, training camp lasts a lot longer 1. It takes Him longer to teach the players on His team because of a problem each of them have sin 2. But God is a patient coach and will keep working with His players until they get it E. Joshua has been going through a rather intensive leadership training course 1. We have seen him grow in his relationship to the Master 2. Growing in his understanding of who and what God is 3. Growing in his faith and love for his Lord 4. And finally growing in his commitment to obedience 5. As a result of that commitment he is growing in his spiritual strength 6. And there is a direct and proportional relationship between the two II. Moses charge Deuteronomy 3:21-28 A. They have already attacked and destroyer the two Ammonite kings, Og and Sihon 1. God wanted the destruction of these two kings to be used as an example to the people 2. That is that He will do the the nations across the Jordan, what He did to Page 1 of 6

2 these two kingdoms on the east side 3. The reason for that is that God will fight for His people 4. However, that does not mean that His people do not have to fight 5. But when you go into battle knowing that the Lord is going to fight for you, there is not reason to fear B. Now Moses tells them how he pled with the Lord to allow him to go into the promised land 1. Moses recounts how the Lord was angry with Moses 2. And Moses blames the people for it 3. And God told Moses that was it, ask no more 4. So the Lord allows Moses to see the land from a mountain top C. Then He gives Moses three directives: 1. Charge Joshua, encourage Joshua and strengthen Joshua a. 5 3. God promises to never cause His people to fail or to ever abandon them IV. Deuteronomy 34:9 A. What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit 1. We are commanded to be filled with the Spirit in Eph. 5:18 2. It involves two things: a. Being controlled by the Spirit b. Being empowered by the Spirit c. The Spirit will never empower anyone or thing that He does not control B. Lessons in leadership 1. God s leader must be filled with the Spirit to receive divine direction, control and power V. The strengthening montage of Scripture: Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. 12 Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth Does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. 29 He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. 30 Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble Page 5 of 6

6 badly, 31 Yet those who wait upon the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
