1 Course Syllabus Spring and Summer School 2012 INTRODUCTION TO BIBLICAL HEBREW [HEBR 1013 & 1023] HEBREW GRAMMAR I & II [OLDT 0611 & 0612] Hebrew I: May 3 to June 11, 2012 (No class on Monday, May 21) Hebrew II: June 21 to July 30, 2012 (No class on Monday, July 2) Mondays and Thursdays 6:30 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. INSTRUCTOR: DR. COURSE DESCRIPTION Hebrew Grammar I is an introduction to the basic principles of biblical Hebrew with emphasis on morphology, phonology and syntax. Hebrew Grammar II is the continuation of OLDT 0611 including some reading of selected portions of the Hebrew Old Testament. II. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the course, students will Parse and translate verbal forms in the categories studied in class Translate basic Hebrew sentences Recognize vocabulary learned in the vocabulary sections in the textbook Read most prose passages of the Hebrew Bible with the aid of a lexicon. 2 Course Philosophy 1. The goal of this course is to provide the student with a basic grasp of Hebrew grammar, so as to enable him/her to preach and teach the Old Testament with accuracy and confidence. 2. The course will seek to steer a middle course between a simplistic and an overlydetailed approach. 3. Language learning need not be frustrating and intimidating. If grammatical terminology and categories are understood, and if adequate time is given to the memorization of forms and vocabulary, the student can expect to acquire a good working knowledge of forms and vocabulary of Biblical Hebrew. III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. REQUIRED TEXTS Pratico, G. D., and M. V. Van Pelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew Grammar. 2 nd Edition. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, Pratico, G. D., and M. V. Van Pelt. Basics of Biblical Hebrew Workbook. 2 nd Edition. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, Holladay, W. L. A Concise Hebrew and Aramaic Lexicon of the Old Testament. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans, Students will receive a free copy of the Hebrew Bible, compliments of the Canadian Bible Society. B. ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING Hebrew Grammar I 1. Homework assignments (10%): Homework assignments will be given for each class period, and will be taken up in class. Students will indicate whether or not the homework has been done. The key to learning this language is consistency and thoroughness in preparation of daily assignments. 2. Quizzes (50%): Missed quizzes count as a zero unless previous arrangements have been made with the professor. 3. Final Exam (40%): A three-hour examination will be given at the end of Hebrew Grammar I (Monday, June 11). 4. Regular class attendance is a must. Your grade will be impacted should you fail to attend class regularly. Moreover, please make an effort to arrive to class on time. 5. It is expected, in terms of homework time, that students will study three hours for every hour in class. Few spend less, many spend a little more. 3 Hebrew Grammar II 1. Homework assignments (10%): Homework assignments will be given for each class period, and will be taken up in class. Students will indicate whether or not the homework has been done. 2. Quizzes (40%): Missed quizzes count as a zero unless previous arrangements have been made with the professor. 3. Final Exam (50%): A three-hour examination will be given at the end of the course (Monday, July 30). C.
