2 1 GETTING RADICAL (Genesis 5) The Story of Us Part 5 Message #1339 Pastor Keith Stewart August 6-7, 2016 Expanded Message Resources This is the written account of Adam s family line. When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God. He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them Mankind when they were created. When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died. Genesis THE LINE OF CAIN VERSUS THE LINE OF SETH (SCOTT, MAKE THE FOLLOWING ONE SLIDE they don t have to come up one at a time) The first thing you can t help but notice is the life spans of these men: Adam 930 years Seth 912 years Enosh 905 years Kenan 910 years Mahalalel 895 years Jared 962 years Enoch 365 years Methuseleh 969 years Lamech 777 years 2. THE REVERSAL OF THE IRONCLAD LAW OF PRIMOGENITURE The law of primogeniture that the eldest is the one who carries the family identity forward is so sacred a principle in the ancient world that it is never violated.

3 2 Primogeniture meant that the big brother always gets more more respect, more status, more prestige, more of everything, including and most importantly, most if not all of the family s assets....one of the most important narrative threads in Genesis is the reversal of the iron law of primogeniture. THE MAN WHO WALKED WITH GOD Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away. Genesis 5.22b-24 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: He could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. Hebrews 11.5 From the beginning of time, all that God has ever wanted was a walking partner. 1. It's what God created us to do. 2. It's what Adam forfeited. 3. It's what God still requires. He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah It's what Christ makes possible.

Leviticus (The Message) The Christian life is described as a walk. We re told to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4), walk by faith (2 Cor. 5:7), walk worthy of our vocation (Eph. 4:1), walk circumspectly (Eph. 5:15), walk honestly (1 Thes. 4:12), walk worthy of the Lord (Col. 1:10), walk in light (1 John 1:7), in the truth (3 John 4), in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16) in love (Eph. 5:2). To be a Christian is to be a traveler. - Kallistos Ware, The Orthodox Way Clement of Alexandria s definition of prayer - keeping company with God. 4. THE GOD WHO IS SLOW TO ANGER AND JUDGMENT Methuselah s name literally means, "His death shall bring it," or loosely translated, "When he dies, it will come." The Lord will rise up as he did at Mount Perazim, he will rouse himself as in the Valley of Gibeon to do his work, his strange work, and perform his task, his alien task. Isaiah Now the earth was corrupt in God s sight and was full of violence. Genesis 6.11 Say to them, As I live, declares the Lord God, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn back, turn back from your evil ways! Why then will you die, O house of Israel? Exodus 33.11

5 4 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3.9 You are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God Who relents from sending calamity Jonah 4.2 These words are so important that they are quoted verbatim throughout the rest of the OT. In Exodus ; Numbers 14.18; Nehemiah 9.17; Psalm 103.8,17; 145.8; Jeremiah ; Joel 2.13; Jonah 4.2. You can also hear echoes of it in Deuteronomy ; 1 Kings 3.6; Lamentations 3.32; Daniel 9.4; and Nahum 1.3. Compassionate is from the Hebrew raham (which is the same root as the word for womb ). Gracious Hebrew word Chanan. The root means to bend, to be inclined. Slow to Anger In other words, God is patient. Lovingkindness This is the Hebrew word, chesed. This is the same word as we find in the NT, the word grace.
