1 ELMONT VILLAGE OF MEMPHIS E VILLAGE NEWS MARCH 2018 elmont Village Management Team EGG-CEPTIONAL SPRING TRADITIONS With the arrival of spring on March 20 comes all the holidays and traditions associated with the end of winter: religious traditions like Passover and Easter, and Nowruz, the Persian New Year. All of these celebrations share an important symbol: the egg. For millennia, the egg has been an exalted symbol of birth, rebirth, and hope. Ancient Egyptians told stories of the sun god hatching from an egg. Sometimes the sun was considered an egg, laid each day by Seb, a cosmic goose and god of the earth. In Hinduism, the egg represents the makeup of the universe. The shell is the heavens, the white is the air, and the yolk is the earth. In the Persian story of creation, Good and Evil are locked in an epic battle. When Evil is hurled into an abyss, Good lays an egg, which represents the universe, with Earth suspended from the heavens as a halfway point between Good above and Evil below. Eggs have always been a symbol of the beginnings of the universe and life itself. No wonder that after the long dark of winter, with the return of the sun, eggs are revered as harbingers of life. When Jews sit together for the Passover Seder on March 30, an egg will adorn the Seder plate as a symbol of the ritual offering to the Temple in Jerusalem. Furthermore, the egg symbolizes you guessed it life itself. For Christians, Easter is a holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ, so using an egg as a symbol of rebirth was a natural choice. The traditional color to dye Easter eggs is red, symbolizing the blood Jesus shed on the cross. In Macedonia, congregants bring their red eggs to Easter church services, and when the priest proclaims, Christ is risen, it is customary to eat the egg as a ritual breaking of the Lenten fast. All over the world, people will be looking at eggs in a different light. I wish all of you a wonderful March and warmer weather, too! Enjoy this time with your families and friends. 3 Circle of Friends& Neighborhood AS AMERICAN AS APPLE PIE They re simple and they re American. ut the pies we know today are a fairly recent addition to a history that goes back as long as mankind has had dough to bake into a crust and stuff to put inside it. In medieval England, they were called pyes, and instead of being predominantly sweet, they were most often filled with meat beef, lamb, wild duck, magpie pigeon spiced with pepper, currants or dates. Historians trace pie s initial origins to the Greeks, who are thought to be the originators of the pastry shell, which they made by combining water and flour. The wealthy Romans used many different kinds of meats or seafood in their pies. Contrary to grade school theater productions across the United States, there was no modern-day pie pumpkin, pecan or otherwise at the first Thanksgiving celebration in Pilgrims brought English-style, meat-based recipes with them to the colonies. Historians don t know all the dishes the Pilgrims served in the first Thanksgiving feast, but primary documents indicate that pilgrims cooked with fowl and venison and it s not unlikely that some of that meat found its way between sheets of dough at some point. The colonists cooked many a pie: because of their crusty tops, pies acted as a means to preserve food, and were often used to keep the filling fresh during the winter months. Further, as the colonies spread out, the pie s role as a means to showcase local ingredients took hold and with it came a proliferation of new, sweet pies. A cookbook from 1796 listed only three types of sweet pies; a cookbook written in the late 1800s featured 8 sweet pie varieties; and by the 1947, the Modern Encyclopedia of Cooking listed 65 different varieties of sweet pies. There are few things as American as apple pie, as the saying goes, but like much of America s pie tradition, the original apple pie recipes came from England. These pre-revolutionary prototypes were made with unsweetened apples and encased in an inedible shell. Yet the apple pie did develop a following, and was first referenced in the year 1589, by poet R. Greene: Thy breath is like the steeme of apple pies. Pies today are world-spanning treats, made with everything from apples to avocados. The Little Pie Shop in New York City claims that the classic apple pie is still their top holiday seller. Out & About TRANSPORTATION FRIENDLY REMINDER! It is never easy regardless, but elmont Village wants to welcome you with big open arms. We are re-establishing various committees within our community to help with this transition. Looking for residents interested in meeting monthly for the following committees: Welcoming Committee Ambassador s Club Holiday and Event Committee Please don t hesitate to contact Gena Garner, (APC), for further information. Optimists are better at problem-solving, have stronger immune systems, and recover faster from illness and injury than pessimists.
6 WHY YOUR PET IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEAL If you have a pet you know the joy and comfort it can bring to your life: A pet helps you stay active and provides companionship. And pets do another act of good: Research shows they may boost your mental and physical health. Scientific evidence suggests that pets play a unique role in humans lives, especially those of older adults. Not only do pets provide companionship that may benefit those who have lost loved ones, but they also may help reduce the stress of these losses, says Erin Rice, director of the People-Animal Connection (PAC) at the Ronald Reagan UA Medical Center. Pet owners benefit from frequent physical activity and social connections from chats with fellow pet owners. Pets also contribute to a sense of purpose that comes from caring for another. Pets enhance emotional and psychological well-being, according to various studies. Animal companionship has been associated with decreases in depression, fatigue, loneliness, and social isolation. Physical benefits also have been tied to pets, especially dogs. Older adults with pets report fewer doctor visits and increased physical activity. A growing body of research has attributed pet companionship to lower blood pressure, a lower resting heart rate and lower cholesterol levels. The evidence supporting the heart-health benefits has proved strong enough that the American Heart Association issued a Scientific Statement that concluded that owning a pet, is associated with decreased cardiovascular risk factors. Animals as therapy Some animals, notably dogs, can be trained to assist people with disabilities, including visual or hearing impairments, limited mobility, seizures, and mental illness. Many nursing homes and hospitals arrange for pet visits because of the calming effect pets have. Several studies have shown that people with dementia show less agitation and aggression when they interact with a dog. Pet therapy is a term that encompasses both animal assisted therapy (programs through which individuals interact with service animals with the goal of improving social, emotional or cognitive function) and animal assisted activities, which use animals to provide comfort and enjoyment. Health News DR. SHAINERG -PODIATRIST On-site visits 1st Wed. of every month. Dr. Shainberg s fee is $40 (cash or check) at time of service. Please turn in your payment to Linda ello, DRCS. INTERNAL MEDICINE OF E MIDSOU Dr. Randy Villanueva will be here every Thursday. -Wellness Center (2nd floor) Appointments and questions, please see Linda ello, DRCS. EXERCISE TO PROTECT YOUR EYES Researchers have found that physical exercise, such as running, walking and dancing, not only keeps your heart and muscles healthy, but protects your vision, too. Studies indicate that people who engage in regular moderate exercise are less likely to develop glaucoma or age-related macular degeneration. Furthermore, doctors say those who already have glaucoma can better manage their condition with physical activity, which can lower intraocular pressure and improve blood flow to the eyes.
