I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season full of cheer and good times with family and friends. It just amazes me how quickly the years fly by, and here we are again starting another new year. Ever wonder how January got its name? According to World Book Millennium 2000, most of the world uses the Georgian calendar, which has January as the first month of the year. It is named for Janus, a Roman god. Roman legend has it that the the ruler Numa Pompilius added January and February to the end of the 10-month Roman calendar in about 700 B.C. Pompilius gave the month 30 days. Romans later made January the first month. In 46 B.C., the Roman statesman Julius Caesar added a day to January, making it 31 days long. The Anglo-Saxons called the first month Wolfmonth because wolves came into the villages in winter in search of food. In the northern half of the world, January is the coldest month. Nature is quiet and the birds travel less. The woodchucks and bears sleep day and night, in hibernation. The plants are resting, waiting for the warmer temperatures of the spring. In the southern half of the world, January is the warmest month. Animals are very active, and plants are growing. I hope everyone has a wonderful January and stays warm and cozy! JANUARY QUOTE Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow; The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Alfred Lord Tennyson

Courtney was born in Memphis and attended Tennessee Technology Center at Jackson to receive her LPN. Currently she is enrolled at Southwest TN Community College in the RN program and will graduate in May Courtney does not have any children yet, but has three nieces and 5 nephews who range in ages four months to 16 years old. They were the first natural set of quadruplets in the state of TN. Also, she has three older sisters. Thanks for all that you do, Courtney!
3 Cold Weather Clothing Through the years, people have relied on more than just hats, scarves and gloves to protect themselves from winter winds. Here s a look at some frigid-weather fashion from the past and present: Cloaks. Cloaks fell out of fashion in the early 1900s as coats gained popularity. However, for centuries a cloak was the way to stay warm in the winter, and could even double as a pillow or blanket on a long journey. Muffs. Popular for both men and women from the 1500s to the late 1800s, fur or silk muffs helped hands stay warm and could hold small items even dogs! Muffs regained popularity in the early 20th century and again during World War II, but purses eventually won out as the handier accessory. Ushanka hats. Russians have worn fur hats for centuries, and the iconic design with the ear flaps became standard issue for Russian soldiers in The practical style remains popular today with military units and civilians around the world. Fleece. The introduction of polar fleece in the 1970s was a revolution in winter wear, as the lightweight, synthetic fabric was warm, comfortable and durable. Nowadays, fleece is used in coats, sweaters, pants, socks and blankets. STOP THE STRESS Stress is any change that makes a physical, mental, or emotional factor that causes body or mental tension. Stress is different for every person. The symptoms of stress can disguise themselves in every aspect of our day-to-day lives. Many health problems can be caused by stress. Stress can make a person lose sleep, cause depression, cause weight gain and also make digestive problems worse, causing diarrhea or constipation. Stress can appear in the body as pain of any kind and even knock down our immune system, making us more susceptible to illness and infections. Some symptoms of too much stress may include aches and pains, anxiety, memory problems or constant worrying. Behavioral responses to stress may include sleeping too much or too little, feeling nervous or jumpy and eating too much or too little. So what can we do about our stress? Proper diet and exercise can help reduce one s stress. Reduce caffeine intake and increase water intake. Decaffeinated tea and coffee are always available. Drink alcohol in moderation. See your community bulletin boards for an array of exercise programs to help you take control of your stress level. TRANSPORTATION FRIENDLY REMINDER! Our concierge is always happy to assist you with your transportation needs. PLEASE GIVE AT LEAST A 24-HOUR NOTICE. It helps with the planning of the driver s schedule. Thank you. There will be drinks, appetizers, music, and fun in The Great Room at 2:30! Aquarius The Water Bearer Laugh Lines: Food Funnies Losing weight and eating healthy are common New Year s resolutions. Laugh off some calories with these food funnies. The toughest part of a diet isn t watching what you eat. It s watching what other people eat. One way to lose weight is by skipping snacks and dessert. It s not the minutes spent at the table that put on weight. It s the seconds. They say the best way to lose weight is to eat all you want of everything you don t like. After listening to several bedtime stories, a young boy said to his father: Snow White was poisoned by an apple, Jack found a giant at the top of a beanstalk, and just look what happened to Alice when she ate a mushroom. And you wonder why I won t eat fruits and vegetables. Crafting Creates Brain Benefits Whether you re stitching, purling, painting, gluing or carving, crafting not only keeps your hands busy, but science shows it can keep your brain nimble, too. Researchers say activities such as sewing, knitting, scrapbooking and woodworking can protect the brain from age-related damage and decrease the risk of mild cognitive impairment. While crafts may appear to simply provide hobbyists with a creative outlet and enjoyment, scientists assert that crafting is unique in that it can exercise many areas of the brain, including memory, attention span, visual-spatial processing, and problem-solving.
6 COF and NEIGHBORHOOD DISCOVERIES The Evolution of Gift-Giving The practice of giving gifts at the beginning of winter traces back to ancient Rome. Ancient Romans held year-end celebrations to honor Saturn, their harvest god; and Mithras, the god of light. As part of these celebrations, the people prepared special foods, decorated their homes with greenery, and joined in singing and gift giving. These customs gradually became part of gift giving. Christmas Presents and Their Religious Significance Sometime after the birth of Jesus, three wise men, also known as Magi, came to visit the newborn. According to the Bible, Matthew 2:1-2,...Magi came from the east to Jerusalem and asked, Where is the one who has been born the King of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him. The wise men brought three gifts with them to honor Jesus, which had prophetic meaning: Gold- a gift for a king Incense- a gift for a priest Myrrh- a burial ointment for one who would die St. Nicholas and Christmas Stockings During the fourth century, St. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. St. Nicholas had a reputation for his generosity and kindness, especially toward children. He was known for giving treats and small presents to them. St. Nicholas has evolved into the magical Santa Claus of today. Christmas Stocking Treats Evolve Into Christmas Presents By the 10th Century, it is believed that nearly every country was participating in the gift giving custom started by St. Nicholas in the fourth century. Common gifts were homemade foods and sweets, oranges (which were a special treat as they were rare), handcrafted gifts and other useful handmade items. These types of gifts were most common up until the industrial revolution when there was a shift from homemade to manufactured Christmas gifts in America. Along with the industrial revolution came the advent of advertising, which, by the 1840s, was an integral part of society. The coalition of these two entities eventually revolutionized the simple custom of Christmas gift giving into the commercialized sensation that it is today. Health News DR.
