IMPACT GOAL To introduce The Old Testament Bible Study and to generate enthusiasm for learning about the books and stories of the Old Testament in chronological order. I didn t know that! So that is when that happened! Gee, I didn t know that he was a descendent of Boaz! These are just some of the statements we heard from the teachers when we test-piloted the Old Testament Chronological Study in The excitement these teachers experienced encouraged us to go forth with this unique study for kids. Today you will begin one of the most important Bible studies you have ever had the privilege of teaching! No doubt you will find yourself echoing similar statements to those above. As you prepare to teach each week, your study will be greatly enriched if you take the time to begin reviewing your Bible study early in the week. Read all of the information presented in the pages of this week s study. Read the actual Bible passages that your story is taken from. Study the information under HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE which will give you cultural background information to help bring the Bible story to life. Stay focused on the IMPACT GOAL which will emphasize how the lesson can apply to your students life. And, above all, bathe all of your study and teaching in prayer. Remember, YOU are the most important vessel that God has to teach His Word to His children for the next hour, or two. You have been entrusted with this honor not only by the Children s Director or Pastor of your church, but also the parents. What an awesome privilege and responsibility! As you enthusiastically present the wonders of God s Word, kids will learn that which will carry them through the whole week. Challenge them to share it with the kids they meet in their neighborhoods and schools. Challenge them to bring their friends to meet their BEST friend, Jesus, and to learn more about Him in your class. Let your enthusiasm be contagious! TEACHER S PRAYER: Dear Lord, As I wait for my students to arrive, my heart is in my throat and I have butterflies in my stomach! I am so excited, and so nervous, about the awesome responsibility you have given me. I want to open your Word to these children in such a way that they will be hungry to come back to learn more about you and what you have done for your people. Please bless each and every child as he enters this room today! OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 1 page 2

INTRODUCTION This year we will be studying the Bible in a way that you have probably never studied it before. We will studying some of the most famous men and women that have ever lived... and their stories are all found in one Book - the Bible! We will be learning about these people in the order they lived. We will learn about the significance of their lives in the total story of God s world. By looking at their lives, we can learn the lessons God wants us to learn as we live in His world today. In addition to this CHRONOLOGICAL (this means arranged in order of time of occurrence ) walk through the Bible, we will be studying one book of the Old Testament each week. This week we will begin by looking at the first book of the Bible, Genesis. But first let s look at what the Bible is and how it is organized to make it easier for us to read and understand God s Word. IT IS WRITTEN... The word Bible means book... the most important book in the world. It is also called Scripture, a word meaning something written. The Bible is like a library of 66 books... but it is more than a collection of books. It is God s message to us, telling us about Himself. It shows us God s mighty acts in the lives of His people, and it shows how they responded to God. From the Bible we learn what God is like and what He expects from us. It took over 1500 years for the whole Bible to be written. It began with Genesis written at the time of Moses and ended with Revelation written by the apostle John about 65 years after Christ s death. There where as many as forty different authors living at different times and in different places. Yet not one of these writers contradicts another. God guided them so that they wrote in their own words what He wanted them to say. (2 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21). Everything in the Bible is true and it will last forever. (Psalm 119:160) OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 1 page 3

The Bible has two major parts -- the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament is a collection of 39 books. The New Testament is a collection of 27 books. When the books of the Bible were first written, the only way people could have a copy was for someone to handwrite it. This work was done by men called scribes who spend their entire days copying the Bible letter by letter. The Old Testament was first written in Hebrew. About 250 years before Jesus birth it was translated into Greek, the language most commonly used. The New Testament was written in Greek. About 350 years after Jesus death. Jerome, who was a leader in the early church, translated the Bible into Latin, the language commonly spoken by many people at the time. It became the official Bible in western Europe for more than 1,000 years. In the late 1300 s John Wycliffe came to believe it was important for all Christians to read the Bible in their own language. He and his followers were the first to translate the Old Testament into English. About 140 years later, William Tyndale translated the New Testament from Greek to English. This was the first Bible printed on a press made by Gutenburg in Germany. In 1611 the best-known English Bible, the King James Version, was published. During the last 100 years many new English translations of the Bible have been made. The goal of each has been to make a translation of God s Word that is accurate and easily understood. The New International Version, finished in 1978, is one of the most widely used translations today. The translators carefully studied the Greek and Hebrew manuscripts so they would know exactly what the original writers of the Bible were saying. Then they translated the Bible into the style of English we speak today. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path. Psalm 119:105 Have kids turn to this verse in the Bible. Discuss what it means to them. This verse will be our theme verse of our study. OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 1 page 4

ABOUT THE OLD TESTAMENT Testament means will or covenant. The Old Testament is the recorded covenant, or promise, between God and man. T h i s covenant was to bless all nations through His chosen people, Israel. There are 39 books in the Old Testament. Bruce Wilkinson of WALK THRU THE BIBLE MINISTRIES gives us an easy way to remember this. Note that the word Old has 3 letters and the word Testament has 9. Put these two numbers together and you get 39! There are 4 major classifications of the Old Testament: Law: Genesis - Deuteronomy (Stories of OT) 5 books History: Joshua - Esther (Stories of OT) 12 books Poetry: Job - Songs of Songs (Feelings of OT) 5 books Prophecy: Isaiah - Malachi (Promises about OT) 17 books TORAH: The Five Books of Law The first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy) are called the Torah. Torah is the body of Jewish literature and oral tradition containing the laws and instruction God gave to Moses for the people of Israel. Historians believe these books were written by Moses... except for the last chapter of Deuteronomy which tells of his death. Another name for these books is Pentateuch which means five scrolls. HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE: Bible Time Line Introduce The Bible Time Line described in the front of this study. Put up the GENESIS card to correspond to this week s book of the Bible. OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 1 page 5

GENESIS Law DESCRIPTION OR MEANING: Beginning In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1... and so starts the recording of the most important book ever written, the Bible. Genesis is a book all about beginnings... - the beginning of the universe - the beginning of man and woman - the beginning of sin - the beginning of God s plan for salvation - the beginning of the Jewish nation It is the story of the beginning of all things except God because God always was there. There are seven major historical milestones recorded in Genesis. During the OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY we will cover each of these stories in greater detail. These stories are: Adam & Eve - Made in the image of God with the ability to choose between right and wrong Noah & the Ark - God takes care of those who love and obey Him Tower of Babel - Praise God, not self Abraham - Father of our Faith and recipient of God s covenant Isaac - Things we treasure Jacob & Esau - Waiting on the Lord Joseph - Trusting God in tough times These seven profiles lay the foundation of the entire Bible in it s history and theology. 29 SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION AND PRAYER REQUEST BOOK One of the most important part of this study is how each student applies what is learned to their own lives. Small groups give kids the opportunity to discuss the lesson learned and what it means to them. In this section of the lesson plans the teacher, or small group leader, will find some questions that can be used to lead this important session.close this small group time by recording prayer requests in the PRAYER REQUEST BOOK and pray. You may also opt to do a PRAYER CHAIN or PRAYER POWER display for your room as a visual reminder that God does answer prayers. (See instructions in the Before You Begin section.) SMALL GROUP QUESTIONS Grades The Bible was written thousands of years ago. What does it have to do with us today? 2. Why is it important to study the Bible in chronological order? 31 IMPACT GOAL To show how God s Word has been preserved throughout the ages. REVIEW: Give the name and theme of the books to date. What is the Bible? God s message to us Sixty six books: 39 in OT and 27 in NT OT has four major classifications: Law, History, Poetry and Prophecy LESSON EMPHASIS GRADES 1-6 What are the Dead Sea Scrolls? Why are they important in the study of the Bible? GRADES 3-6 (HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE) Who hid the Dead Sea Scrolls? How were these scrolls preserved? TEACHER S PRAYER: Dear Lord. Today we will study the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls and their importance in confirming that the words we read in our present day Old Testament are those penned by the original writers. Please guide me as I show the importance of these documents as the acknowledgment that your Word was inspired and preserved it throughout the many translations that have been made. Help me to communicate how this book is more than just a book. It is the directions by which we are to live our lives in Christian love and harmony. OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 2 page 2

THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS In 1947 there was a very important discovery made in the ancient caves just west of the Dead Sea. A young shepherd boy was exploring the caves when he stumbled into a room full of old pottery jars. Hoping to find gold or other treasures, he opened the packages wrapped in leather he found inside one of the jars. The shepherd boy did find something priceless. He had found scrolls that turned out to be the oldest copy found to date of what we now call the Old Testament. When excavators finished exploring all of the caves on the hills of the Dead Sea, they had found the total of five hundred scrolls in eleven caves written between 250 BC and A.D. 68. Of the five hundred scrolls, one hundred of them were of books or parts of books of the Old Testament. They were written in the original Hebrew language and were probably hidden there by a religious Jewish group when the Romans attacked Palestine and destroyed Jerusalem in approximately A.D. 68. They had been preserved due to the the dry air of the caves and the pottery jars. Two things make this find extraordinary. The first is the text on the scrolls is virtually identical to the text we have today. God kept His Word from being changed in the process of copying it for so many centuries. The second thing is one 23 foot scroll was the entire Old Testament book of Isaiah. It was the oldest copy of Isaiah known to exist by almost 1000 years! OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 2 page 3

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE One of the most important facts about the BIble is that it is not a book about God... but a book from God. It is because of this uniqueness that it was important for scholars throughout the ages to preserve His message. To assure the accuracy of their work, scribes who copied the Bible would count all of the words and letters in the original text and compare it to the number of words and letters in his copy. Then he would find the middle word of each to see if they matched. This way they were able to check their work to make sure it was right. There is something else interesting about the Dead Sea Scrolls. Can you imagine hiding something for almost two thousand years and it remain in such good condition? These scrolls were hidden from approximately 68 AD until How were they preserved so long? The scrolls, now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls because of where they were found, were from the library of a group of devote religious Jews who lived in Qumran next to the Dead Sea. The scrolls were made of leather, carefully wrapped and placed in clay jars in the caves to the west the sea when the Romans invaded their land. Later archaeologists discovered the room where the scrolls were written as well as the pottery from which the jars that the scrolls were placed were made. It was the combination of these specially made jars and the dry air of the caves that kept the scrolls safe. OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 2 page 4

EXODUS Law DESCRIPTION OR MEANING: Exit or Going Out I am sending you [Moses] to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt. Exodus 3:10 Exodus means exit or going out. It is the story of how God chose Moses to help His people leave Egypt and obey the laws He gave them. God had promised Abraham that his descendants would live in Canaan, the Promised Land, but as we see in the beginning of Exodus they were living in Egypt... and they were slaves! Yet God always keeps His promises so He raised a leader to carry out His plan. Moses was a Hebrew (the name used for Israelites at this time). He was born at the time when the king of Egypt had ordered the death of all male Hebrew babies because there were so many Hebrews that he was afraid they would take over his kingdom. Exodus 1-3 tells of how Moses was saved from death and raised as a prince, his flight to Midian, and his calling from God to save His people. In Chapters 5-14 we read how God used Moses and his brother Aaron to persuade the Pharaoh to let the Hebrews go by sending ten plagues. Chapters is about their life in the desert, and in Chapters Moses records God s first laws to his people. The 10 Commandments explained how the people were to live to please God. Finally Chapters is about just how God wanted His people to worship Him and how they were to build their place of worship, the Tabernacle. TEACHER S PRAYER: Dear Lord. As we start studying the actual stories found in your Word, help me to remember that each story contains a message from you for me as well as for my students. Lord, many of us have heard the stories over and over again and think that we know all there is to know about them. Help me to present them with new understanding and insight. Help me to remember that I may have someone in my class that is hearing them for the first time. May I make these stories of beginnings as relevant to them as to my most knowledgeable student. 44 Speak to the entire assembly of Israel and say to them: Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy. Leviticus 19:2 Leviticus is a book of laws - a guidebook for righteous living. It tells God s newly freed people how to worship Him and how to obey Him. The Hebrew slaves, now called Israelites had to function as a new nation. This meant there needed to be rules of how to behave in this new society as well as defining the specific roles of the different tribes. (Remember the Israelites were made up of the twelve groups of descendants of Jacob s twelve sons.) One of these tribes was called Levi, named after one of Jacob s sons. Leviticus means about the Levites and was written specifically for a select group of Levites, the priests. It was their job to take care of the tabernacle. In the nation of Israel, only Levites could become priests, but not all Levites were priests. According to their customs, only the priests had access to God. They were to act as mediators between the people and God. There were two ways they could have access to God - through offerings and feasts. In the first seven chapters, Leviticus describes the five offerings and the consequences for breaking the rules. The rest of the book describes the feasts and the importance of remembering the holy days. Both the offerings and the feasts gave clues about Jesus Christ. 45 Once upon a time... CREATION SCRIPTURE Genesis 1:1-31; 2:1-7; 2:18-25 God created the heavens and the earth. God created everything that exists today... except God because He already was. He created everything in six days and rested on the seventh. Here is the run down of what happened on each day. Day 1 - God made light and called it day. He called darkness night. Day 2 - God made the sky which separated water on earth from water above. Day 3 - God gathered waters into seas and called the dry ground land. Day 4 - God made two great lights - the sun by day, the moon by night. He also made the stars. Day 5 - God filled the seas with living creatures and the skies with birds. Day 6 - God blessed the land and it produced living creatures. He created man and woman in His own image. Day 7 - God rested. What we can learn from the story From the story of creation, we know that God created the world. It was not a product of a Big Bang or any other scientific theory. First there was nothing, then there was something. God created it to make a place for people. He spent the first three days shaping the world: day and night, sky and water, and the dry land. He spent the next three days making it beautiful: sun, moon and stars, seas with living creatures & skies with birds, and dry land with living creatures. Each bird, fish and animal is uniquely made OLD TESTAMENT CHRONOLOGICAL STUDY: Week 3 page 4

made for it s habitat. God then made man and made him responsible to take care of His world and all the living creatures in it. God saw that it was not good for man to be alone so he caused man to fall asleep and took one of his ribs and made a helpmate, woman. Today there is much debate about how long it took for the world to form. Some think that each day represents thousands of years. Others think that each day represents a twenty four hour period of time. If the first theory is true, then mysterious animals such as dinosaurs could have lived and died on this earth prior to the creation of man. Or their fossils could have been created during the 7 day period of time with the purpose of providing gas and oil for our use today. In either case, the Bible tells us that God created everything. A second debate that wages on today concerning creation is the scientific theory of evolution. Some argue that man evolved from apes. Others argue that we evolved from dolphin-like creatures of the sea. The Bible clearly states in Genesis 1 and again in Isaiah 45:18 that God created the heavens and earth and that we were made in HIS image... not an ape s! 47 CREATION

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE We ve all heard it before. Was man created by God or did he evolve? On one side are Christians with God s Word as their defense. On the other side are Evolutionists and their theories based on behavioral science. Let us briefly look at these two theories and their affect on mankind. There are two schools of thought concerning evolution. One is that we evolved from apes. The other is that we evolved from the dolphin-like sea creatures. Common to both of these evolution theories is the attempt to rationalize the bad behavior of man such as hate, brutality and selfishness. Those who believe that God created man focus on the goodness found in man... the God-like qualities. They focus on the attributes of forgiveness, appreciation of truth and beauty and man s willingness to sacrifice for others. These are the things that set us aside from all other creatures of God. God created man in his own image, not an ape! (Genesis 1:27) Let s look at another controversial subject in the story of creation. Many people today are under the mistaken belief that woman was made subservient to man. That males are more important in God s world than females are. By examining the Bible passage that tells how Eve came to be, we can see how important God thought Eve was. After God had made Adam and had placed him in the Garden of Eden surrounded by all that he had created for man to enjoy, he saw the need for someone to fill the emptiness in Adam s life. God did NOT reach down and form Eve from clay the same way that he had formed Adam. He made her from Adam s rib. When Adam first saw Eve, he recognized her as bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. (Genesis 2:23) She, being taken from his body shares fully in his identity of being made in the image of God and, therefore, shares fully as heir to God s kingdom. How did Satan deceive Eve and how does he do it today? TEACHER S PRAYER: Dear Lord. Thank you for the world we live in.thank you for the children you have brought here today for me to teach. As I think of the Garden of Eden and how perfect it was, it makes me sad that sin had to come into your world. Sometimes I wish there was not any sin or sorrow in the world. How I wish that all of mankind could walk in your presence. That is what makes teaching your Word so important. I want everyone to know you and to want to be more like you in what they do. I want them to read the Bible to find out the answers to life s tough questions so that they can avoid the pain and sorrow of making the wrong choices. Above all I want the children in my class to know that your son, Jesus, paid the price for our sins and that we can all stand side by side and walk hand in hand with you in heaven. 62 Take a census of the whole Israelite community by their clans and families, listing every man by name. Numbers 1:2 The book of Numbers is about counting people. The first count was done in the first chapter of the book. Moses and Aaron were to number all the men 20 years old or more who would be able to serve in an army. They were to be listed by their divisions, or tribes. God instructed them to not include the Levites because they were in charge of the Tabernacle and whenever they moved, they were responsible for taking it down and setting it up. In Numbers 1:46 we are told that the total number of eligible men was 603,550. The second count was done after God sent a plague killing many of the people. After this count, there were 601,730 eligible men of Israel. Between each consensus is the story of the Israelites forty years of wandering in the wilderness because they did not trust God. When Moses sent twelve men to explore Canaan, the Promised Land, ten of the men told the multitude that although the land was beautiful and rich it could not be defeated because it was inhabited by mighty giants. Only Joshua and Caleb urged the people to trust in God. Instead the Israelites complained about Moses & Aaron saying they were better off in Egypt. This made God very angry and He wanted to strike them with a plague and destroy all of them. Moses interceded for the people asking for forgiveness. God honored Moses prayer but did not allow any of the original men except Joshua and Caleb, who witnessed His miracles in Egypt, to enter the Promised Land.
