2 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR S REPORT AND CAMPAIGN NEWS REMEMBER, LEST WE FORGET AND FROM THIS WE LEARNED NOTHING On Monday, April 24th, the Fort Wayne community will join communities worldwide in commemorating Yom Hashoah. The overwhelming theme that will run through all of these observances is the importance of remembering -- recalling the victims of this catastrophe and insuring that such a tragedy never happens again. For this reason, the Yom Hashoah Committee of the Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne has asked Stephen Fineberg, Holocaust Scholar at the United States Memorial Museum to speak on the importance of remembering...lest we forget. Heartland Chamber Chorale will perform two very meaningful Yom Hashoah songs as part of our commemoration. Students from three local schools will be in attendance to discuss the story boards and art work they have created as part of their classroom Holocaust educational curriculum. You will be amazed at the in-depth study they have done for their projects. This is part of the new generation wishing to be upstanders...not bystanders as world Jewry is undergoing a new wave of anti-semitism. We thank the Dr. Harry Salon Foundation and the Jewish Federation Annual Campaign for making this event possible. Jaki Schreier Executive Director Please join us and Jews around the world who will hold memorials and vigils, as we light six candles in honor of the six million Holocaust victims. On this day, in Israel, a morning siren sounds, all activity stops, and citizens stand in memory of those who died. 3 PARTNERS To the People of the Book committee, chaired by Kathy Sider, for an amazing evening with Brad Meltzer last month. People of the Book This year we were fortunate to welcome NY Times bestselling author Brad Meltzer for the Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne s 38 th People of the Book program on Monday, March 6 at the Rifkin Campus at The event was very well received by the Fort Wayne Community with one of our largest crowds to date for this popular event. A successful author over many genres, Mr. Meltzer attracted a diverse audience. Mr. Meltzer gave an inspirational and engaging lecture titled, What s Your Legacy? He discussed how ordinary people in society become heroes such as Alex Scott, founder of Alex s Lemonade Stand, and Officer Frank Shankwitz, the cofounder of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The audience was encouraged by Mr. Meltzer to seek out those in their lives who have inspired them and thank them. The evening concluded with a dessert reception and book signing. Mr. Meltzer was very gracious and signed books well past 10:00 p.m. One teacher from FWCS brought more than 50 titles for him to sign! Thank you to the committee for their contributions toward the success of the event. They are Carol Adelman, Fran Adler, Jamie Berger, Elissa Cohen, Betty Stein, Donna Tourkow, Al Zacher, Beth Zweig and Executive Director Jaki Schreier. 3

4 RECAPS We don t need to tell you that reading to your children is important. Study after study has shown it impacts a child s development. Even the mere presence of books in a home increases the level of education they can reach. But finding the right books and making the time to read as a family can be hard. That s where PJ Library comes in. JOIN OUR THOUGHTFUL THURSDAYS BAG ASSEMBLY TEAM The Jewish community s Thoughtful Thursdays volunteers will meet on Wednesday, April 12 at 10 a.m. to assemble bags for the 72 Brightpoint Head Start students who attend class at the Temple. Our final bag assembly this school year is Wednesday, May 3 at 11 a.m., followed by the annual Thoughtful Thursdays volunteer luncheon in the Goldstine Chapel. This project would not be possible without volunteers from Congregation Achduth Vesholom, Congregation B nai Jacob, and the Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne. Contact Jamie Berger to learn more about getting involved in Thoughtful Thursdays atjberger02@comcast.net. For our Federation members, who have made a pledge of at least $54.00 a year, PJ Library sends free Jewish children s books to families across the world every month. We know that something magical happens when parents sit down together to read with their children. PJ Library shares Jewish stories that can help your family talk together about values and traditions that are important to you. A program of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, PJ Library is made possible through partnerships with philanthropists and local Jewish organizations. Families with kids ages 6 months through 8 years old with Judaism as part of their lives are welcome to sign up. PJ Library welcomes all Jewish families, whatever your background, knowledge, family make-up, or observance may be. Through our partners around North America, we also offer activities for your family because you ve got to get out of the house and meet new people sometimes. Your children are learning about the world around them through the stories they hear. PJ Library books can bring Jewish ideas and inspiration for you and your children to share together. Looking for a great way to incorporate music on Shabbat with your little ones? PJ Library and Spotify have teamed up to bring you a Shabbat Playlist - ( user/pjlibrary/playlist/3oxtmorfowcoxwegpabec1). Enjoy! A SCENE FROM JERUSALEM Our creative juices were flowing when we met the beginning of March for our Jewish Federation of Fort Wayne Women s Rosh Chodesh Group! We met at Wine and Canvas to complete an abstract painting of Jerusalem. Some of us were a little more precise with our lines, and some of us enjoyed the option of abstract. What we all did agree on was having a great time together! See you next month! 4

6 CONGREGATION ACHDUTH VESHOLOM NEWS AUTHOR TO SPEAK AT RESOURCE CENTER GRAND OPENING Author David Laskin will be the keynote speaker at the Grand Opening of the Madge Rothschild Resource Center on Sunday, April 30 at the Rifkin Campus at He ll discuss One Family, Three Journeys: How one family embodied the sweep of 20th century Jewish history. Laskin s fascinating book explores his own family history, which begins a century and a half ago with a Torah scribe and his wife raising six children at the western fringe of the Russian Empire. The upheavals of the last century split the family into three branches: one immigrated to America and founded two businesses, including the Maidenform Bra Company; one went to Palestine as pioneer farmers and participated in the violent birth of the State of Israel; the third branch remained behind in Europe and suffered the onslaught of the Nazi occupation. The celebration begins at 2 p.m. with an open house in the Resource Center, a reception, and tours of Congregation Achduth Vesholom at 2:15 p.m., 2:45 p.m., and 3:15 p.m. The author will speak at 4 p.m., followed by a book signing and reception. The resource center is the cornerstone of the Rifkin Campus at 5200 project and includes the Rabbi Richard B. Safran Library and the Jacob L. Goldman Museum focusing on 200 years of Jewish history in Northeast Indiana. Thank you to the Dr. Harry W. Salon Foundation for its support of Laskin s visit. WHY IS THIS NIGHT DIFFERENT?
