1 1 2 6/4/00 Isaiah Isaiah continues to deal with Judah as they continue in their rebellion against God, pronouncing woe s to them. Judah was looking to Egypt to her protection rather than the Lord. Their ongoing stubbornness and deafness to the voice of God would not be ignored by God. 31:1-9 Woe to those who trust in the arm of flesh. 31:1-3 Egypt was not Israel s deliverer. 1) Judgment is pronounce for trusting in the military strength of Egypt, rather than the Holy One of Israel. vs. 1; 20:2-6; 30:1-2 * A key title of God in the book of Isaiah. Is. 1:4; 10:17; 43:15 a) The Law warned the future kings of such dependency on horses. Deut. 17: )) Egypt attacked Reaboam. 2Chron. 12:1-3 2)) The Egyptians exported chariots. 1Kings 10:29 b) The contrast is clear in the Psalms. Ps. 20 2) God in His wisdom, in a form of sarcasm, will be true to His word of judgment and defeat them. vs. 2 * The evildoers and the workers of iniquity, those who trust the Egyptians. Is. 29:14; 30:8-14 3) The prophet points out the basic mistake of man, men are not God, horses or any other human help is flesh at best not spirit, therefore are doom to fail. vs. 3 31:4-5 God would deliver Jerusalem. 1) God would not to be stopped or discourage in His defense of Jerusalem, for He is the Lord of hosts. vs. 4 a) He like a lion, fearless, would not be run off by the multitude of shepherds who would stand against Him. Amos 3:12 b) He would come down and fight for Mount Zion. 2) God at the same time spoke to the prophet that He would protect Jerusalem. vs. 5 * God destroyed 185,000 in one night by the angel of the Lord. Is. 37:36 31:6-9 The Lord will be savior and judge. 1) The prophet pleads the people to repent from the rebellion towards God. vs. 6 2) The day would bring repentance by the abandoning of their idols. vs. 7

2 3 4 a) After the destruction of the Assyrian, many did turn to God and trusted Him. b) Idolatry is an affront to God. 3) The Lord sent out one angel, destroying 185,000 front line troops. vs. 8; 2Kings 19:35-37; Is. 37:36 4) They left in fear back to Nineveh, Sennecharib was struck down as he worshipped in the temple of Nisrock, his god. vs. 9; 2Kings 19: :1-8 The reign of Christ. 32:1-2 The ruling character of that day. 1) The King is no other than Jesus Christ, king of king and Lord of Lords, who will reign in righteousness. vs. 1a; Rev. 19:16 * This chapter interrupts the woe of judgment, leaving us the sixth till chapter 33. 2) The princes are those who rule with Him, no doubt, we the church, having made us a kingdom of priests. vs. 1b; Rev. 1:6 3) The king and the princes will in effect become a protection and shelter to the subjects of the kingdom, who are ruling in righteousness. vs. 2, 1, 16; 33:5 * The language is very clear in it s picturesque language! 32:4-8 The change of character in society and environment of that day. 1) The eye and ear of the inhabitants will no longer be dull to the truth proclaimed as in the day of Isaiah. vs. 3 a) The prophet has pointed out the moral indifference Is. 6:9-10 b) This is our day, with the philosophy of tolerance and politically correct language, so as not to offend anyone, regardless of the immorality of lack of ethics. 2) The attitude of the hasty person and understanding of the stammerers will speak plainly. vs. 4 3) The fool will not be called noble nor the miser bountiful but truth will be spoken. vs. 5 * The vile person will no longer be called liberal. 4) The description of the fool and the miser are given. vs. 6-7 a) The fool is undisciplined,impetuous, easily tempted, having weak character, affecting society. vs. 6 b) The miser is speaks lies to take advantage of the needy. vs. 7 5) The generous man of the kingdom age will be beneficial to man. vs. 8

3 5 6 32:9-14 The charge to the women false rest and security. 1) The women of Isaiah s day were complacent to the voice of the prophet and are called to rise up and hear. vs. 9 a) Isaiah has already touched on the sensual and self-center heart of the women, caught up with all their fashion and luxury. Is. 3:16-23 b) The women were had become an influence for evil towards their husband, rather than help-meets. Amos 4:1; 6:1 * Women are the barometer of a nations spiritual condition! 2) The prophet tells them that in a short time they would be in trouble for the present ease and complacency, having no crops. vs. 10 * Assyria though she would not enter Jerusalem, she had cut off supplies and travel. 3) The women are called to mourn, tremble and humble themselves in sackcloth and describes the horror of the people and the land. vs a) The near reality was the Northern Kingdom by Assyria. b) The far reality was the Southern Kingdom by Babylon. 32:15-20 The contrasting affect in the kingdoms sure rest and security. 1) Not until God s Spirit is poured out in the kingdom, will the land be it s most fruitful. vs. 15 2) The same with justice and righteousness, the result being fruitful fields, peace and the effect being quietness and security. vs * Fruitful fields is a translation of Mount Carmel, a region known for it s fruit trees. 3) The people of God, Israel, will dwell in a peaceful habitation and secure resting place. vs. 18 4) The message is one of faith for the future, in contrast to the gloom and destruction awaiting Jerusalem not too far off. vs * Some think it could refer to the destruction of Nineveh, the capital of Assyria but the context favors Jerusalem. 33:1-4 The judgment to come upon Assyria. 33:1 The woe to Assyria. 1) This is the sixth woe in the series of judgments from chapter and it is directed to Assyria, who has plundered

4 7 8 but has not been plundered as of yet. vs. 1a-b 2) She had been the rode of God s anger but dealt treacherously but not treated so, yet when she ceases to plundered by God. vs. 1c-g, 10:5 33:2 The cry of the people of God. 1) The prophet pleads in intercessory prayer for the grace of God. 2) The reason behind it was that they had waited on God. 3) The prophet asks that God be the people s strength and salvation. vs. 2 * The people seeing their resources exhausted, Egypt defeated, they turned to God in the time of trouble, like so often God s people do! 33:3-4 The victory of God over Assyria. 1) They shall flee, the tumult of Assyians at God s attack. vs. 3 2) The plunder will be sudden and complete and plunder will be taken by Israel. vs. 4, 2Kings 19:35, Is. 37:36 33:5-6 The exaltation of the Lord. * Some believe these two versus refer to the time. 1) The Lord is exalted, a statement of fact, due to the fact that He dwells on high in heaven, superior to all down on earth, judging the sin of His people. vs. 5 2) The Lord is the one who worked in the heart of those in Zion to turn to justice and righteousness by faith. 3) The benefit of their descsion is declared. vs. 6 a) The wisdom and knowledge of God would be their stability for their time of trouble. b) The same would also be their strength of salvation. c) The fear of the Lord would be their treasure to draw from, as they went through the ordeal. 33:7-9 The condition of the people that led them to depend on God. 1) The valiant men and ambassadors cried and wept, seeing their hopelessness. vs. 7 2) The condition of the country was bleak. vs. 8 a) The highways were destroyed. b) The people ceased to come to Jerusalem. c) The covenant was broken by Sennecherib. * The treaty between Hezekiah and Sennecherib had been nullified by Sennecherib, though he took the tribute money of three hundred

5 9 10 talents of silver and thirty talents of gold from Hezekiah, Sennecherib returned and surrounded Jerusalem and not suspended the hostility. 2Kings 18:13-17 d) Sennecherib has transpopulated people. e) He regards no man, arrogant and prideful. 3) The entire country suffers and is marked by the devastation of Assyria, from it s forest to it s most fertile valleys. vs. 9 33:10-16 God calls the people of God to be in awe of His might. 1) God would fight for Zion, emphatic by the three nows. vs. 10 2) The outcome would be like consumable material in the fire. vs ) The people of Jerusalem and far off are to take notice of God s might, perhaps the Egyptians.. vs. 13 4) The sinner and hypocrites of Zion would fear, reflecting on their own evil. vs. 14ab 5) The prophet asks who might dwell with the devouring fire or everlasting burning, indication God. vs. 14c-d a) Fire being a symbol of God s holiness. b) Fire will consume or transform into permanency, depending on the type of material it is, the fire is indifferent to it! Heb. 12:29 a) God is said to be light. b) God is said to be love. c) God is said to be Spirit. d) God is said to be life. 6) The prophet provides the answer. vs. 15 a) He who walks righteously and speaks upright. b) He who despises the gain of oppressions. c) He who gesture with his hand, refusing bribes. d) He who stops his ears from hearing of bloodshed. e) He who shuts his eyes from seeing evil. 7)The benefits of such a person are given. vs. 16 a) He will dwell on high, in fellowship with God. b) His place of defense will be he fortress of rocks, God Himself. c) His bread will be given him. d) His water will be sure. * The priority is the Kingdom, not things. Matt. 6:33 33:17-24 God promise of God s deliverance.

6 1) The people would see the beauty and mighty power of the king that Isaiah saw, high and lifted up in His temple, as He defended Jerusalem, a true worship of God. vs. 17 * The entire passage looks ultimately to the kingdom age! 2) The work of God would grip the heart of those in Jerusalem with terror, who were so used to depend on their military wisdom and resources. vs. 18 * The Lord is repeated throughout the chapter, in order to emphasize that it would be He alone who would act not any man! vs. 2, 5, 10, 22 3) The Assyrians would be destroyed as God would destroy the 185,000 Assyrian, front-line troops. vs. 19 4) God calls the people to look upon Zion, They would see the feast celebrated and witness that not one stake or cord would be broken by Assyria. vs. 20 5) The Lord would be in their midst, be their judge and king. vs ) The Lord God would be like a river that would withstand the mighty ship of Assyria and turn over the provisions to Israel, the greatest need being forgiveness. vs * The Kingdom will see this ultimate fulfilment for Israel.
