1 Personal Application and Group Interaction: By definition, for God to be sovereign He has to be in control of everything. In Joel s day it was locust and fire, in 2004 and 2011 our world experienced devastating tsunamis. Were the tsunamis God s judgments, why or why not? Habakkuk s response to the answers God gave him was to praise God (Habakkuk 3). How does praising God, rehearsing who He is, help you when evil is making an impact in your life? Zephaniah is clear The Day of the Lord is coming. How should coming judgment affect our everyday lives? Haggai 2:9 refers to our lives as the spiritual temple, the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit. What are the practical applications of the fact that our bodies are God s temple? Read Zechariah 7:13 in its context (8-14). How should we apply this warning today? Take ten minutes and read Malachi. What steps should we take to avoid finding ourselves being described by these words? You may be proud of something that was accomplished by yourself or a family member. What makes pride good or bad? 2 The Role of Prophets They were God s spokesmen acting as intermediaries between God and the people, countless times heralding impending judgment and calling the people to repentance. They revealed future events and worked miracles proving they were God s messengers. Many were leaders in the community and responsible as watchmen. As we see true with the 12 Minor Prophets, they were writers of scripture. From Last Week Hosea Hosea s marriage to a prostitute illustrated the way Israel was treating God. Applying Hosea s message to today s society, as Abraham Lincoln said, Intoxicated by our own unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to the God who made us. Amos Amos was a Southerner that prophesied to the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Chapter two finds Israel guilty of gross violations of human rights. Amos is not recommended reading as a bedtime story for children. Micah Micah addresses the capital cities, Jerusalem and Samaria, with the message that God s judgment is about to fall. The king of Israel, Ahaz, had adopted a pro-assyrian foreign policy and during his reign the captivity of Israel took place.
