1 1 2 4/30/00 Isaiah The prophet Isaiah continues to declare judgment but now directed to the entire earth, in the Great- Tribulation, leading into the millennial kingdom. This section of four chapters is a complete unit and seen by some as the grand finale to the Oracle against the nations, it is the judgment of God for the whole world. Keep in mind that sixty-nine of the seventy weeks of Daniel s prophecy have been fulfilled, when Jesus rode in to Jerusalem on the donkey. Since then God s prophetic clock has been stopped and the church age has been in affect for almost two-thousand years. There is only one prophetic week is left to be fulfilled in the last seven years of man s history, as the Anti-christ is embraced and reigns on the earth for seven years. The key phrase to this section is in that day. Is. 24:21; 25:9; 26:1, 2, 12, 13; 27:1, 2,12, 13 The type of literature is called apocalyptic after the nature of the book of Revelation, between the forces of Satan and God. The judgment of the entire world will result in the righteous braking out in singing and rejoicing. Is. 24:16; 25:9; 26:1, 19; 27:2 24:1-23 The desolation of the earth. 24:1-3 The devastation. 1) The great Tribulation will manifest super natural intervention and the focus with natural consequences. vs. 1 a) The earth is mentioned thirteen times in the chapter. b) John tell us that one fourth of the earth s population will be destroyed in the first four seals, over one-billion people. Rev. 6 c) Later when the demons are released, one third of the remaining population will be destroyed, one more billion. 2) The judgment will be across the board, giving six contrasts, without exception. vs. 2-3 a) Known as Jacob s trouble. Jer. 30:7 b) The religious and commercial system of Babylon will be utterly destroyed. Rev :4-6 The reasons for the devastation.

2 3 4 1) The pride of man has brought on the judgment. vs. 4 2) The earth has been defiles by the transgression of the Law, charged the ordinances and broken the everlasting covenant, perhaps a reference to the Noah covenant. vs. 5 * Gen. 9:8-17 3) The curse has only revealed the ongoing evil of man. vs. 6 * The return of the Lord is captured in the second Psalm. Ps. 2 24:7-13 The end of celebration and comfort. 1) Provisions and pleasure cease. vs ) Fear in the city caused people to barred themselves up in their houses. vs. 10 3) Desperation and no protection by the broken gates characterized the city. vs ) The end result will be like the gleaning of grapes, few left, a remnant. vs. 13 a) Amos declares the same. Amos 5:16-17, 8:3 b) The Lord Jesus said that unless those days would be shorten, no one would survive, for they will be such as never have been! 24:14-16a-f remnant. The cry of triumph by the 1) The song of the righteous remnant, knowing the judgment will usher in the Kingdom. vs. 14 2) The glory belongs to the Lord for His righteous judgment, with all authority, being the Lord and God of Israel. vs. 15 3) The prophets expresses his present lamentation in view of the present. condition and future judgment, I am ruined, consumed or leanness, Woe is me! vs. 16 a) The expression of the prophet was similar at seeing God s glory on His throne. Is. 6:5 b) The righteous One has judged perfectly, magnifying His glory! 24:16g-20 The consequencencial judgment of the people and the condition of the earth. 1) Treachery was the character of the day of Isaiah. vs. 16g-h 2) Sure calamity is present by the hand of heaven, fear, the pit and the snare, they could run but you can t hide. vs ab, 5:19; Amos 5:18 * The section is filled with alliteration and vivid imagery! 3) The judgment will be like the days of Noah of violent shaking of earthquakes,

3 5 6 splitting the earth, tottering like a drunken man. vs. 18c-20 a) The description brings to mind the flood of Noah. Gen. 7-8 b) All that can be shaken, will be shaken. Heb. 12: :21-23 The rule of Christ. 1) In that day, at the Lord s return to the earth, He will punish the leaders and kings of the earth and demoniac forces. vs. 21 a) The kings of the earth appear in Sheol. 14:9-10 b) The beast and false prophet. Rev. 13:1-18; 16:14; 17:12-14; 19:19 2) He will gather the evil of the earth and incarcerate them in the pit, synonymous with Hades, till the White Throne Judgment, after many days. vs. 22 a) The judgment of the nations takes place immediately at the return of Jesus to the earth with His church, in view of their treatment of the Jew in the Tribulation. Matt. 25 b) The Antichrist will be bound for onethousand years in the abuzo or pit. Rev. 20:2-3 c) There are different places mentioned in the Scriptures, Sheol or the grave, Hades, Tartarus, the Pit, Abuzo or bottomless pit, and the Lake of Fire or Gehenna. Lk. 16; 1Pet. 3:19-21; 2Pet. 2:4; Jude 6; Matt. 25:41; Rev. 20:1-10 3) The supernatural phenomena will usher the Kingdom age of Christ on the earth for one-thousand years, at Jerusalem. vs. 23 a) The Lord of hosts, the victorious king, will reign and His glory will be superior and incomparable to that of the sun and moon, having no need of them! Is. 60:19-20; Rev. 21:23-25; 22:5 b) The throne of God will be at Mount Zion. Is. 2:2-4 25:1-12 The song of praise to God by the redeemed in the kingdom. 25:1-5 The praise and glory of God. 1) God was true to bring to pass His reign on the earth and is to be exalted, His name is praised for awesome faithfulness. vs. 1 a) This is a mere continuation of the preceding chapter, evident by the three-fold repetition of the phrase, on this mountain. vs. 6, 7, 10 * Chapter 66 portrays the city and new heaven and earth. b) The prayer is the expression of confident trust in God.

4 7 8 * God revealed the courtroom in heaven in the opening chapter of the book, now we see it on the earth in Mount Zion! 2) God has destroyed all who opposed Him, the fortified city is thought to be Babylon by some but Jerusalem is the focus of Isaiah s days yet both are included in the last days also. vs. 2 3) God will subdue all on earth. vs. 3 4) God s faithfulness to all who have trusted Him, the poor and needy. vs. 4 5) God will rule over all. vs. 5 25:6-8 The provisions of God. 1) God will provide all the things people live for now, on Mount Zion, the new Jerusalem. vs. 6 a) The banqueting imagery was a common element in the teaching of Jesus and a wedding. Lk. 14:15-24 b) The parallel being the supper of the Lamb. Rev. 19:9 2) God will destroy all blindness on the earth, removing the spiritual veil, particular the Jews. vs. 7 * Rom. 11:12, 25 3) God will destroy death at the end of the kingdom, no more tears. vs. 8 a) At the present time, death still occurs but has no more sting or victory through the work of Christ. 1Cor. 15:54-55 b) Then, death and Hades are cast into the Lake of Fire at the end of the Kingdom Age. Rev. 20:14 25:9-12 The boast in their God. 1) God is celebrated being present, :on that day, as they have waited for Him. vs. 9 * Notice it is our God, the plural implying the people, opposed to the singular in verse one. 2) God will rule with a rod of iron on this mountain, Zion conquering Moab, trampling it as a manure pit. vs. 10 * The judgment of Moab. 16:4 3) God will humble them. vs. 11 4) God will destroy their strong holds and be all in all and reign supreme. vs :1-27:13 The song of salvation in the kingdom. 26:1-6 The city of God. 1) In that day, the day of Moab s destruction, in the kingdom, this song will be sung in the land of Judah. vs. 1 * Reminder of the pilgrimages to Jerusalem in the feast days. 2) The believer will have a strong city in that day with protection.

5 9 10 3) The gates will allow those obedient nations. vs. 2 * Righteousness is the character of the day, he who has a clean hands, as the Psalmist declares. vs. 2, 7, 9, 10; Ps. 24:3-4 4) The peace of God will be steadfast with those whose mind is set on Him, due to their trust in Him. vs. 3 a) The peace Shalom, describes ultimate fulfilment, abundance, security, etc, Ps. 112:7-8; Phil. 4:6-7 5) The reason to trust God is that He is everlasting Rock of Ages. vs. 4 * This imagery for God is well known and establish in the Scriptures. Ex. 17:6; Matt. 7: ) The strong city of God humbles the proud city, along with the poor and needy. vs. 5-6 a) The contrast of the two cities is inescapable in these four chapters, leveling all human affairs! b) The New heaven and earth, the new Jerusalem. Rev. 21:1-4 26:7-11 The desire of the righteous for God judgment on the earth. * Jesus gave a parable of the unjust judge who neither feared God or man, to illustrate that people not be discouraged about God s vindication against the wicked! Lk. 18:1-8 1) The just walk upright and the Upright One knows it. vs. 7 2) The longing is finally present, the waiting is over for God s judgments. vs. 8 3) The night and early morning seeking of God judgments will be realized in the Great-Tribulation and then in the Kingdom, the world learns righteousness. vs. 9 4) The wicked will not change, even in the midst of grace and righteous rule and will be separated from God, rejecting the King and the kingdom. vs. 10 5) The wicked are oblivious to God s judgment. vs :12-15 The zeal and faithfulness of God to Israel. 1) God is the source of all and the peace through all. vs. 12 2) The only master they acknowledge by name is Jehovah, instead of all who subjugated them. vs. 13 3) The masters of their past are dead by God s hand. vs. 14 4) God brings to pass the promise land boundaries in the kingdom age, being glorified. vs. 15 * Is. 9:7

6 :16-19 The chastisement of God. 1) In their trouble they sought the Lord in prayer, literally they poured out a whisper, due to God s chastening. vs. 16 a) This could be a reference to their cultic times of idolatry. b) The time of judges and others or Sennacherib s threats. 2) The crying out is compared to a woman in child birth. vs. 17 3) Their travail and pain brought forth wind, nothing. vs. 18 4) The saints in the future are to be resurrected, this being a literal declaration. vs. 19 * This is not talking about the nation of Israel as the valley of dry bones, the rebirth of the nation. Ezk. 36 a) All who died in faith in the Old Testament went to Sheol or the Grave, waiting a future resurrection. Job 19:25-27; Dan. 12:2 b) The New Testament tells us this place was a two-fold compartment, the place of torment and the place of comfort, also called Paradise, the bosom of Abraham. Lk. 16 c) Matthew tell us of the dead bodies raised as the veil was rent and were seen walking about Jerusalem, as evidence of the transition based on the Lord s physical resurrection. Matt. 27:51-53 d) Peter tells us that the Lord Jesus went down to Sheol or Hades and preached to those who died in faith. Pet. 3:19-21 e) Paul confirms this to the Ephesians, at which time He gave gifts to men. Eph. 4:9-10 f) The principalities and powers were defeated as He spoiled Hades. Col. 2:14-15 g) The place of those who die after the resurrection, is the third heaven, Paradise, even as Jesus promised the h) Paul confirms this as he was caught up to heaven. 2Cor. 12:7-10 i) The first resurrection involves the saved, the second involves the lost, experiencing the second death. Rev. 20 :6 26:20-27:1 The refuge city of the redeemed. * The division of the chapter is unfortunately, for this chapter should run to the first verse of the next chapter. 1) God calls his faithful to enter secure chambers and shut the door. vs. 20a-c 2) The time duration is for little moment. vs. 20d-e

7 ) The period is until the indignation is past. vs. 20f 4) The Lord s coming is from His place heaven. vs. 21a 5) The purpose is to punish the inhabitants of the earth for their iniquities. vs. 21b 6) The earth will be responsible for all the blood shed. vs. 21c-d * This is the reason God instituted capital punishment. Gen. 4:10, 9:5-6, Num. 35:33-34 a) This is speaks of the Great-tribulation period of the last days. b) God will protect Israel in Petra as the Antichrist seeks to destroy her. Is. 16:1-4; Matt. 24; Mk. 13; Lk. 21; Rev :1 The Lord s sword of judgment. 1) In that day God will destroy the enemy Satan with a great sword and he is cast into the Abuzo, for a thousand years. Rev. 12:9; 19:15; 20:2 a) God is the great Warrior. b) The antichrist, false prophet are instruments of his! 2) He is the god of this world and the source of all evil. 2Cor. 4:4 27:2-6 The Lord s song of His vineyard. 1) In that day of the reign of Christ. vs. 2 * The vineyard of the Lord. Is. 5:1-7 2) God is the keeper of Israel from the tower, from robbers and little foxes. vs. 3 3) Any who oppose God will not prosper, only those who make peace with Him. vs ) Those who do so will be recipients of the blessing of Israel. vs. 6a 5) The blossoming of fruit is partly fulfill now, as Israel exports fruit throughout the world, but the ultimate fulfilment will be in the reign of Christ. vs. 6b-c 27:7-11 The Lord s chastening of Israel. 1) God has punished Israel through others and then turned and punished them, even as He was going to do to Assyria and Babylon in 722, 606, 598, 586 B. C. vs. 7 2) God removed Himself from Her and would cover her sin in the last days. vs ) God nevertheless would make the city of Jerusalem desolate at the present, due to the fact that they were a people of no understanding. vs :12-13 The Lord s regathering of His people. 1) In that day, the reign of Christ, the Jew will be gathered on by one. vs. 12 a) Short term is Assyria and Egypt.

8 b) Long term the re-establishing of Israel as a nation in 1948 till the present day. c) the ultimate fulfillment is the reign of Christ. 2) In that day a great trumpet will be blown of victory and the divine reign of Christ. vs
