1 TEMPLE BETH EL N i s a n A p r i l Dear Friends, RABBI S MESSAGE Chronicle What a wonderful Purim celebration we enjoyed here at TBE! Our Religious School Students were sensational in their Dr. Seuss rendition of the story of Purim. On Saturday, our Torah Study group read Megillat Esther, uncovering many fascinating aspects of the story that are hidden beneath its surface. And on Sunday, we were joined by Congregation Beth Israel for a family celebration and carnival that was both educational and fun. Thank you to the many people who helped make these events so success. It is your participation that makes Temple Beth El a valuable place to be. Your involvement enables us to provide for the spiritual, religious, social and cultural needs of the community in a way that enriches all of our lives. As we usher in the month of April (Nisan), there are many more opportunities to continue your involvement at TBE, leading to experiences that, as the credit card commercial says, are priceless. This month we will be emphasizing two very important themes of Judaism: Hospitality and freedom. Hachnasat Orchim is the Hebrew term for hospitality. From our patriarch Abraham we learn the importance of welcoming others into our homes and community. Friday, April 11 th we are hosting our New & Prospective Member Shabbat. Please join us for Shabbat Dinner at 6:00 PM followed by our Religious School Family Service at 7:00 as we demonstrate our wonderful TBE hospitality, letting all know they are welcome here. Want to help with our Potluck Dinner and Oneg Shabbat? Contact the Temple Office and we will let you know what you can bring for this beautiful Shabbat celebration. Passover, which marks our freedom from slavery in Egypt, is observed this year from April Our Community Seder will be Tuesday, April 15 th at 6:30 PM. We draw a big crowd for this holiday, so dinner reservations are very important. Please refer to this Chronicle for more information. I look forward to sharing this holiday with you and others in the TBE and Salinas community. B Shalom, Rabbi Delbick
2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE The recent issue of the National Association for Temple Administration focused on How Congregations Measure Success. It was interesting to note that many congregations define success by how many people attend events, how many complaints there were and if things were consistent with the budget. Our board meetings are often spent dealing with problems, complaints, the budget issues, financial problems and although these cannot be ignored the suggestion was to create & build meaningful relationships and have impact by more attention to telling success stories and developing a strategic plan. I thought about these comments in reviewing how I reacted to our wonderful concert we had last month. Initially, I noted that while we had over 100 people in attendance, less than 25% were Temple members. I initially found this disappointing since I had hoped for more but the concert was so wonderful, I began focusing less on who attended and more on what a marvelous experience it was for those who did attend..
3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE continued... I want to thank Steve, Aya, Kayla & Hannah Ettiner, Cantor Margaret Bruner, Rumiana Drumeva, Devin & Clarece LaMarr, the First Presbyterian Choir and their director, Dr. David A. Dehner for the concert last month. The performance was a wonderful combination of Classical, Jewish and Folk music and everyone was moved by this afternoon of music. April and May will be busy months at Temple Beth El. We will be having a New and Prospective Member Shabbat on April 11, 2014 involving a pot luck (non dairy) dinner at 6:00 PM and a Family Service at 7:00 PM. Our Community Passover Seder will be on Tuesday, April 15, Please join us and help us plan by making a reservation. On Sunday, May 4, 2014 at 1:00 PM we will have our Annual Congregation Meeting. We hope everyone will attend as we plan for our Temple s future. Last but certainly not least, our 6th Annual Martini Gala will be on May 10, 2014 at 6:00 PM. We will have a wonderful dinner, live music, martinis, a wine heist, silent auction and a reverse draw. Thank you to our chair, Barb English and all who ve volunteered to help. I am requesting two things from everyone. First of all, come to the Gala and bring friends and family. Secondly, we need auction items donated. Suggestions include golf rounds, spa packages, gift baskets, jewelry, gift certificates, sports memorabilia, sports tickets etc..
4 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE continued... One of my goals for the coming year is to have a committee to focus on a strategic plan for Temple Beth El. We will need a committee for this project and most likely a survey to understand our member s priorities and goals. We want programs for children as well as adults that lead to deeper relationships with congregants as well as greater spiritual and intellectual stimulations. We are a small Temple but have accomplished a great deal and have much to be proud of. Our members are supportive in times of joy and in times of pain. We need to make some changes in how we operate as well as how we evaluate our success as we plan for our future. Very truly yours, Sheri Perlman President
