1 WORKMEN OF THE WORD II TIMOTHY 2:15 BIBLE STUDY GUIDE Exodus 1-4 DAY ONE Scripture to be studied today: Review: Genesis 1. To review our study of Genesis, answer at least one of the following questions. a. Name one person in the book of Genesis who particularly impressed you. What lesson did you learn from his/her story? b. What did you learn about the nature of man from Genesis? c. What aspects of the character of God did you see displayed in Genesis? 2. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. Have you learned something from the study of Genesis that you feel God will continue to use in your life? Make a brief statement and be ready to share with your group. DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Overview of Exodus While Genesis recorded the lives of many individuals, the book of Exodus is the record of one man, Moses, and the nation of Israel. We will follow the people of Israel from bondage in Egypt to deliverance by God and their subsequent wanderings in the wilderness. We will also see God s love, faithfulness and holiness. Read Exodus 1 through 4. Record your initial observations of Moses. 2. For a more detailed study of Moses, answer the following questions. a. How was Moses set apart for the task God had for him to do? Exodus 2:2; Acts 7: b. What was Moses response to his early years in Pharaoh s house? Hebrews 11: c. When God had chosen Moses to be His spokesman, what was Moses view of his abilities? Exodus 4:10 and 6:30. d. Describe Moses relationship to the Lord from Exodus 33:11 and Deuteronomy 34:10. 1

2 e. How is Moses described in the following sets of verses? II Chronicles 1:3 with Joshua 18:7 Ezra 3:2 with II Chronicles 30:16 f. Although Moses was reluctant to speak for God, he was given the strong names that we discovered in the verses above. Explain how you think that could be. DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 1 1. Review the following promises of God to Abraham and compare their fulfillment in Jacob s descendants. a. Genesis 17:2 with Exodus 1:5-7 b. Genesis 15:13-16 with Exodus 12:40, 41 and 3:21, Give words/phrases from Exodus 1:11-14 that describe the hard labor imposed on the sons of Israel. a. Name the cities that were built from their labor. b. How did this increased labor affect the population growth of the Hebrew people? 3. From Exodus 1:15-22, what did Pharaoh do next to decrease the population of the Hebrews? Did it work? 4. What was Pharaoh s next command? 5. From Exodus 1, in what ways do you see that God was in control although Pharaoh seemed to be in charge of the immediate events? 2

3 DAY FOUR Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 2 1. Read Exodus 2. To learn the names of the members of Moses family read Numbers 26: Briefly tell how God protected the baby Moses. 3. When Moses had grown he saw an Egyptian afflicting a Hebrew. With whom did he identify, what action did he take and with what result? Exodus 2: After fleeing from Pharaoh, Moses came to the land of Midian. Again he displayed his sense of justice and protected the daughters of the priest of Midian. What resulted from this encounter? Exodus 2: From Exodus 2:23 explain the plight of the Hebrews who were still in Egypt. 6. From Exodus 2:24, 25 name four ways God responded to the groaning of the Hebrews. 7. What have you learned about God giving aid in difficult circumstances? Do you think He does the same for us today? Relate a time when this happened in your own life. DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 3 and 4 1. Read Exodus 3. As Moses was going about his usual duties, what unusual event took place? Give verses and a short account. 2. From Exodus 3:5-12 give the following information: a. God s concern. b. What he wanted Moses to do. c. The promise He gave to Moses. 3. When Moses asked God whom he should say had sent him to the children of Israel, what was God s answer? What do you see as the significance of this name? 3

Describe the three signs God gave to Moses to prove that he was sent of God. 6. In simple words, what were the four excuses Moses gave God to escape His call? We observed that God had chosen him and called him to be His special servant. a. What especially impressed you about Moses from last week s lesson? b. What did you learn about God? 2. In our chapters this week, Moses and Aaron appear before Pharaoh. Read Exodus 5 through 7 from The Living Bible, if possible, and then use the New American Standard Bible to answer your questions. a. The King of Egypt was worshipped as a god. Also, he and the Egyptians worshipped many things of nature. Because of his exalted and powerful position as Pharaoh, he had become a man of immense pride. This is a basic reason for his heart being hardened against God and His people. When a man s heart is filled with pride, what is his attitude toward God according to Psalm 10:4-11:4? b. What does God say about those with a proud heart? See Proverbs 16:18 (16:16) and 26:12. c. Rather than a proud heart and attitude, how should we think of ourselves? Romans 12:3 and 16. d. What is the end result of pride in a person s life? Proverbs 29:1. DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 5 1. Read Exodus 5. What was the first request that Moses made to Pharaoh? Exodus 5:1 with Exodus 3: What three things did Pharaoh include in his reply to Moses? Exodus 5:2. Comment [MM1]: Missing verb 3. Had the life of the Hebrew people improved with the return of Moses? Give verses from Exodus 5:7-21 that support your answer. 5

6 4. When the Hebrew foremen went to Pharaoh with their complaint, of what did Pharaoh accuse the people? 5. Compare Exodus 4:29-31 with Exodus 5:20, 21. How and why had the feelings of the Hebrew people changed toward Moses? a. What was Moses question of God? b. Of what did he accuse God? 6. We sometimes find ourselves in difficult situations and feel that God is not doing anything, or is even working against us. What does Isaiah 55:8, 9 say about our thinking and God s thinking? Whose is best? DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 6 1. Exodus 6 begins with God s reply to Moses words in Exodus 5:22, 23. Read Exodus 6:1-9. What assurance of deliverance did God give Moses in verse 1? 2. In Exodus 6:2-8, God declared Himself to be the answer to Moses and the Hebrews problem. Note the use of the statements I will and I am the Lord. What seven things did God say He would do for the Hebrews? 3. How did the people respond and why? 4. God gave Moses a specific command in Exodus 6:10, 11. What was Moses response in verse 12? Was there a sense in which he was still depending on himself? Explain. 5. We, too, depend on ourselves and our skills instead of God many times. Think of an instance right now in which this has been true in your life. Read what Apostle Paul 6

7 had to say in Philippians 4:13, Galatians 2:20 and in his prayer for all believers in Ephesians 3: Write out the verse that best meets your situation. DAY FOUR Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 7 1. Read Exodus 7, giving special attention to verses 1-7. Note the line of authority in verses 1 and 2. To whom was Moses responsible? To whom was Aaron responsible? 2. Aaron is to be Moses prophet. What are the guidelines that God gave Moses concerning the words that Aaron was to speak to Pharaoh and the people? a. Exodus 7:2 b. Exodus 4:15, As we share God s Word with others, of what are we to be careful according to: a. Deuteronomy 4:2 and 12:32 b. Proverbs 30:5, 6 4. In Exodus 7:3-5, God gave Moses a look into future events. God told Moses He would harden Pharaoh s heart. For what purpose? Also read Exodus 3:19, How did Moses and Aaron respond to the command of God? How is this a good guideline for us? DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 7: Read Exodus 7:8-25. When Moses and Aaron where ready to appear before Pharaoh for the second time, God reminded them of what they were to do. What was the first wonder they were to work before Pharaoh? 2. What did Pharaoh do after seeing Moses staff become a serpent? 7

8 3. How do you think Moses and Aaron felt when they saw the work of Pharaoh s wise men? 4. How did God confirm His power over the magicians? 5. From Exodus 7:13, what was the effect of the miracle on the Pharaoh? Do you think Moses was surprised by Pharaoh s response? Why? 6. Knowing Pharaoh s heart would be hard, what had God planned as the next step in the ongoing process of getting His people out of Egypt? 7. Although the works of Moses, and then the magicians, caused a serious problem for the Egyptians, how did Pharaoh respond? 8. We are sometimes discouraged when unbelievers do not recognize the hand of God in the happenings of their lives. But what do Romans 8:5-8 and I Corinthians 2:14 tell us? 9. 10 DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 7:20-11:10 From the study of Day One you have become familiar with the text of Exodus 7:20-11:10. Today we will do a Search and Find study. You will need only to skim/read, making note of selected facts and occurrences. 1. Pharaoh s magicians play an interesting role in this story. a. What did the magicians do in the first and second plagues? Exodus 7:20-8:7 b. What did they do in the third plague? Exodus 8:16-19 c. In the sixth plague? Exodus 9:8-12 Note that they are not mentioned in plagues number four and five. d. What is the servant s advice to Pharaoh in Exodus 10:7? e. How did Pharaoh s servants feel about Moses in Exodus 11:3? f. In what ways were the powers of the magicians limited? 2. Using the chart of Day One, fill in column #4. Note when the text indicates that Pharaoh hardened his own heart and when the Lord hardened his heart. 3. Do you see a progression in the heart condition of Pharaoh? 11 DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 8 1. Read all of Exodus 8. Fill in columns #2 and #3 on the chart for plagues numbered two through four. 2. Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron to entreat the Lord to rid the land of the frogs (verse 8). Moses conceded to Pharaoh s request for what reason? a. When the pressure was off, how did Pharaoh react? b. Are we prone to make promises to God under the pressure of difficult times and then forget them when there is relief? Give an example. 3. Pharaoh began to bargain with Moses and Aaron in Exodus 8:25. a. What was Pharaoh s proposal? b. From verse 26 what was Moses response? 4. Do you see any parallel in the compromise that Pharaoh suggested to Moses with what Satan would have us do today? DAY FOUR Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 9 and Read Exodus 9 and 10 filling in columns #3 and #4 for plagues numbered five through nine. 2. What was God s accusation against Pharaoh in Exodus 9:17? 3. The seventh plague is unique in that God gave a warning to Pharaoh and the people in Exodus 9:18, 19. a. What was the warning? b. DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus In Exodus 11:1-3, the Lord reveals to Moses that this is to be the final plague. Moses then related to Pharaoh what was going to happen to all the land of Egypt. a. How are Moses feelings described in Exodus 11:8? b. Of what did God remind Moses in verse 9? 2. Complete the chart of Day One with the information in Exodus What have you learned about God in the study of the ten plagues? Think about His power, grace, judgment, etc. 12

And as for His stretched-out hand, who can turn it back? Isaiah 14:27 The time had come for God to bring the tenth and final plague on Egypt. Pharaoh had continued to refuse to let the children of Israel go from the land. Now would come the last and heaviest judgment. God s hand would not be turned back. He would deliver His people. 1. Read Exodus 12 with the following divisions in mind. Exodus 12:1-14 Preparation for the Passover. 12:15-20 Instructions for unleavened bread. 12:21-28 Instructions for the Passover. 12:29-36 Midnight judgment. 12:37-51 Departure from Egypt. Share any questions or comments from your reading. DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 12: Review God s words to Moses concerning Egypt in Exodus 7:4 and 6:6, 7. Jot down some of the things God promised to do for His children, Israel, in these verses. 2. Read Exodus 12:1-18. What two events began in the lives of the Hebrew people at this time that were to remain with them throughout all their generations as permanent ordinances or memorials? Give verses with your answer. 3. From Exodus 12:11, in what manner were the people to eat the lamb of the Lord s Passover? Why do you think it was necessary to do it in that way? 13

14 4. Make a drawing to explain what the people were to do with some of the blood from the lamb that they had slain. Exodus 12:7 and The blood on the houses showed that these people believed God and accepted His way of salvation from death. What did God say He would do when He saw the blood? What would happen to those who had no blood on the door? 6. The Passover of Exodus is a picture of our salvation in Jesus Christ. Read the following New Testament passages carefully and prayerfully. In what way is our salvation from spiritual death related to the blood of Jesus Christ? Romans 3:22-25 and 5:8, 9; I Peter 1: DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 12: Unleavened bread was an important aspect of the first Passover. Read again Exodus 12:8 and What instructions did God give regarding the observance of the Feast of Unleavened Bread as a memorial in future years? 2. Give a dictionary definition of leaven, noting its complete and various uses. 3. Leaven is also spoken of in the New Testament in I Corinthians 5:6-9. a. To what is leaven likened in this passage? b. To what is unleavened bread likened? c. How does the above definition of leaven fit into the thought of this passage? d. How would you apply the phrase clean out the old leaven to your spiritual life? 4. Matthew 16:11 and 12 use the idea of leaven in still a different way. Of what is Jesus warning the disciples? Is this same warning applicable to us today? Explain. 14

15 DAY FOUR Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 12: Read Exodus 12:28-51 to see what happened as a result of the Passover night. a. After Moses and Aaron had given all the instructions concerning the Passover, what did the people do? Exodus 12:28 b. What would have been the consequences if they had not obeyed? 2. The drama of this story reaches its greatest height in the events of the Passover. Read again Exodus 11:1 and then Exodus 12:31-33 to gain the impact of God s words and their fulfillment. From these passages describe the extent of the fulfillment of God s words to Moses. 3. How many sons of Israel left Egypt that night? Who and what enlarged the company that left Egypt? 4. What provision did God make to allow the extras to participate in the eating of the Passover Feast? Exodus 12:38 with 12: The Passover Feast was to be observed throughout the following generations as a permanent ordinance. What reason were the parents to give their children for the Passover observance each year? Exodus 12:26, 27 DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus In Moses message to the people (Exodus 13:1-16) find the phrase that is used three times to describe God s protection of the sons of Israel. Write it out. 2. Is there a way in which God has brought you out of bondage by His powerful hand? Another person may benefit from hearing you share your experience. Be willing to share with your group. 3. Although the sons of Israel had escaped bondage, what was God s concern in Exodus 13:17, 18 and what did He do about it? 4. WORKMEN OF THE WORD II TIMOTHY 2:15 BIBLE STUDY GUIDE Exodus DAY ONE Scripture to be studied today: Overview Exodus God had delivered Israel from Egypt in a way that perfectly fulfilled His promise that Pharaoh would drive them out and that they would leave the land with many possessions. Now in Chapter 14 God completed His judgment on Pharaoh by a mighty show of His power. Israel responded in songs of praise that quickly turned to grumblings of complaints as they experienced the rigors of wilderness living. Read Exodus with a pencil in hand. Underline in your Bible or write on your worksheet key words and phrases that express the main thoughts of these chapters. DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 14: Having read all of Exodus 14-16, we will study one section at a time. In Exodus 14:1-14 God worked out His strategy against the Egyptians to bring about their judgment. Note God s words to Moses in verses 2-4. What did God want Pharaoh to think concerning the vulnerability of Israel? 2. Meanwhile, back at the palace of Pharaoh, what were his thoughts about having let the Israelite slaves leave the land? 3. What action did Pharaoh take to get his work force back? 4. When the children of Israel looked and saw the Egyptians coming after them, what was their reaction? Verses

17 5. Moses made three strong statements about God s care and power. Write out each of these statements and how they might be applied to our lives today. DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 14: By God s design, the Israelites were between the Red Sea and Pharaoh s army. Paraphrase the Lord s words to Moses in Exodus 14: In Exodus 14:16-18 God told Moses what was going to happen and why. Summarize briefly what God said each of the following would do. a. Moses b. Israelites c. God d. Egyptians 3. In what way did the angel of God protect Israel in Exodus 14:19 and 20? 4. In verse 21, what did Moses do? What did God do? 17

18 5. Read Exodus 14:21-29 and note all the miracles that occurred as Israel escaped from the Egyptians. 6. Read Exodus 14:30 and 31. What was the result of God s miracles in the lives of the Israelites? 7. Give an instance from your own life when you had cause to praise God for His protection, provision or blessing. DAY FOUR Scripture to be studied today: Exodus After God worked in such a mighty way, the sons of Israel sang a song to the Lord. Read this song in Exodus 15:1-18. Write down phrases that are especially meaningful to you. 2. Take time to sing through a favorite hymn of praise. You might want to share some of the words with your group. 3. We are encouraged to sing praises to the Lord many times in Scripture. What do the following verses say about singing our thanks to God? a. Psalm 92:1(91:1) b. Isaiah 42:10 c. Colossians 3:16 4. Perhaps you would like to write a poem or song of praise to God. Do it. 5. What is the problem that Israel encountered in Exodus 15:22-27? What was their reaction to the problem? 18

19 6. Describe the if and I will of verse 26. DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus Read Exodus 16:1-12. What one word sets the theme for this passage? 2. Can you believe Exodus 16:3? After all of the miracles that Israel had experienced in the past six weeks, what was their complaint to Moses and Aaron? 3. Although they were expressing their complaint to Moses and Aaron, to whom were they really complaining? What verses tell us this? 4. When we grumble and complain, is there a sense in which we are grumbling against God? Read what the Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:11-13 and I Timothy 6:6. 5. How did God answer the complaints of Israel in Exodus 16:11-15? 6. In Exodus 16:16-21 what were the guidelines concerning the manna? What happened when they did not observe the guidelines? 7. What special instructions did God give about collecting the manna on the Sabbath? 8. Moses was told to preserve some of the manna so that they might not forget God s provision for them. In what way might we preserve the memory of God s provision in our daily lives? Be specific and practical. 19

Consider how the manna we studied last week was a type of Jesus Christ. Read John 6:32-35 and Review what the manna was and make a comparison to Jesus. 2. As we follow Israel through the wilderness, we see them continually tried and tested in various ways. The dictionary defines testing as a set of circumstances that proves or tries a person s qualities. Relate Deuteronomy 8:2-4 and 8:16-20 to that definition. What qualities was God looking for in His people? Did He find them? 3. In our chapters for this week, look for the tests the Israelites experienced and the lessons you think the Lord expected them to learn. Read Exodus 17 through 19 and jot down your observations. DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 17: Picture in your mind the two million Israelites moving slowly through the wilderness from one camp to another. When they arrived at Rephidim, what was their greatest need? 2. Read Exodus 17:2-4 carefully. What attitude was present in the people as they confronted Moses? Write down words or phrases that support your answer. 3. What were the three specific instructions that God gave Moses in verses 5 and 6? 20

21 4. Why do you think God had Moses take some of the elders of Israel with him to the rock? 5. Exodus 17:7 says, The sons of Israel tested the Lord saying Is the Lord us, or not? a. What is your reaction to their question? Explain. b. Are we ever in a position to test the Lord? What do Deuteronomy 6:16 and Matthew 4:7 say about this? c. What are some of the promises of God s Word that assure us that God is always with us? Take time to study and think on this subject. DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 17: Read the scripture portion for today along with Deuteronomy 25:17, 18. What do you learn about Amalek that our passage in Exodus does not tell us? 2. What was the first thing Moses did to resist the attack by the Amalekites? 3. What was the key to Israel s victory over Amalek? (Note from verse 9 what it was that Moses held in his hand.) 4. From Exodus 17:11 and 12 what spiritual applications can you see? Are there lessons for the Body of Christ today in these verses? 5. We know that Moses was responsible for writing the first five books of the Bible. What specifically did God want recorded in His book regarding Amalek? 6. What does the name the Lord my Banner mean to you? DAY FOUR Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 18: Read Exodus 18:1-12. Write down both the facts mentioned and the impressions you have about the man Jethro from this section. 21

22 2. What do you observe to be the relationship that Moses had with Jethro? 3. The Israelites had trouble recognizing the goodness of the Lord in all that had happened to them. Jethro, however, had an immediate grasp of all that God had done for them and was deeply impressed. a. What was the effect of Moses testimony on Jethro? b. Is there someone you know whose testimony has made an impact on your life? Share it with your group. 4. Read Exodus 18: As an outsider looking at the task Moses was undertaking, what did Jethro observe? a. What two functions was Moses handling single-handedly? b. What was Jethro s counsel to Moses? 5. Leadership is never to be given or taken lightly. In choosing leadership we might do well to follow the guidelines that Jethro gave to Moses. a. What were the qualifications that were given for those who would assume leadership? b. In Acts 6:1-4 and I Timothy 3:1-7, what qualities were required of those who were to serve the New Testament Church? DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus Read Exodus 19:1-8. The sons of Israel had arrived at Mount Sinai and God was preparing them to receive the Law which He would give to Moses. a. How did God beautifully describe His care over Israel? b. What do the following verses tell you He will do for you? Isaiah 40:

23 Jeremiah 31:3 (40:3) 2. God s love and care for the sons of Israel did not ignore the responsibility of Israel to respond to God with integrity and obedience. a. What did God promise the Israelites and what were the conditions for receiving God s promise? b. Read I Peter 2:9, 10 and note that we become recipients of this same promise through salvation in Jesus Christ. Do you think that God expects less of us than He did of His children, Israel? 3. Read Exodus 19:9-25. To be able to witness God s words to Moses, Moses had to consecrate the people and set some rules for their behavior. a. Use a dictionary to define consecrate. b. The people had become soiled during their walk through wilderness. Moses told them to wash their garments. What spiritual application can you make concerning our lives and the preparation we should make as we come to worship the Lord? 4. What were the physical manifestations that proved that God was there on the mountain? 5. God s warnings to keep the people from approaching the mountain were very severe. Through whom can we come before God? Read Hebrews 4: Thank God for Jesus Christ who makes it possible for us to come before God boldly and with confidence. 23

God selected a leader and trained him. God defeated their enemies and freed them. God fed them and yet they rebelled. Israel was a nation that had been under bondage for 400 years. They really did not know who God was or what He expected of them as His called out ones. Beginning in Exodus 19, God began to teach them about His holiness. Review Exodus 19 from last week s lesson and jot down how it emphasizes God s holiness. 1. God proceeded to bring about a whole new way of thinking when He gave Moses the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. God expected the Israelites to live lives separated from sin. Read Exodus 20 and notice that God s laws are divided into two parts: man s attitude toward God and man s attitude toward his fellow man. How many commandments are in each division? 2. Take special note of the words that preface the commandments in verses 1 and 2. Who gave all of the Law? DAY TWO Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 20: Exodus 20:3-11 contains the first four commandments. Briefly write out each one. 24

25 What do you see as God s intention in giving these four commandments? 3. The second commandment contains both a warning and a promise. What far-reaching effect does our attitude toward God have on others? 4. Our homes today do not have actual graven images, but what other gods might take the focus of our affection away from the Lord? 5. The third commandment is found in verse 7. We are not to take the name of the Lord in vain. Or we are not to profane the name of the Lord. A dictionary definition of profane is to show disregard or contempt for sacred things or to take that which is holy and make it common. a. Although the use of profanity of speech is implied here, there are many ways in which we can profane the name of the Lord. Think carefully about the above definition and jot down ways in which we might profane the name of the Lord. b. Matthew 6:9 tells us that God s name is to be hallowed or considered holy. What does that mean to you? Optional study: Using a Concordance, do a word study of name or Thy name, especially in the book of Psalms. 6. The fourth commandment concerns keeping the Sabbath holy. Read Isaiah 56:2, 4-7 and 58:13, 14. a. How does the word profane relate to these verses? b. What are the rewards for keeping the Sabbath mentioned in these verses in Isaiah? c. If obeyed by all, they would assure God s people a peaceful life free from fear and strife. Choose one commandment and state what fear it would eliminate, if obeyed. 2. Write down all of the blessings that are especially meaningful to you. DAY FIVE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus 21 and Exodus 20 was an outline or overview of God s commandments. In Exodus 21 through 24 God spelled out in more detail just what He meant. Read Exodus 21. In verses 1-11 the relationship of the master and slave is discussed. In that regard, read Deuteronomy 15:12-18 and Jeremiah 34: a. How long were Hebrew slaves to be kept? Then what was to happen? b. According to Deuteronomy 15:15, what were the Hebrews to remember? c. Did the Israelites obey this law? What was their punishment? Jeremiah 34:12-17 (41:12-17). 2. As you read Exodus 21:18-27, what underlying emotion seems to be behind all of the violent actions described? 3. What is the penalty for murder, kidnapping, and other violent crimes? 4. Read through Exodus 21:26 to the end of chapter 22. Note that fairness dictates these ordinances. Are there some of these directives that are still used in our laws and courts today? 5. Three negative attitudes or emotions seem to be the basic cause of all sin: anger, 27

28 covetousness, and indifference or carelessness. Can you identify any of these attitudes in your life? What did Jesus say is the solution to these problems? Matthew 22:37-40 WORKMEN OF THE WORD II TIMOTHY 2:15 BIBLE STUDY GUIDE Exodus DAY ONE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus Review: The Law, given by God through Moses, was to be a school master for Israel. But God promised through Jeremiah that He would Put My law within them, and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. In the same passage God also said, For I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more (Jeremiah 31:33, 34). This has been made possible through Jesus Christ. Jesus said that the whole Law and Prophets is summed up in love for God and our fellow man. Paul also taught that love fulfills the Law. Read Matthew 22:37-40 and Romans 13:8-10 and then write a statement concerning how the Law of God is perfectly fulfilled when we live by the law of love. 2. The opening verses of Exodus 23 have to do with practical situations in which Israel was to act with concern for the welfare of others. Read Exodus 23:1-9. God had called Moses to the mountain and told him that he would be there forty days and forty nights. During that time God would give him instructions on the building of the tabernacle. The tabernacle was the first house ever built for the worship of God. God Himself was the architect and in it we see the beautiful object lessons of the plan of salvation. Read Exodus 25. a. Did God say He would dwell in the tabernacle? Compare Exodus 25:8, 29:45, 46 with I Kings 8: (3 Kingdoms 8:25-27 in Orthodox Study Bible). b. How had God been present with Israel up to this time? 29

DAY THREE Scripture to be studied today: Exodus In Exodus 25:9 and 40 God told Moses to be very careful to build the tabernacle according to God s specific directions. In Exodus we find instructions for the curtains and the framework, the altar and the courtyard of the tabernacle and the clothing to be worn by the priests. Begin by reading Chapter 26. There were curtains for various purposes described in detail, but what is the purpose of the curtain or veil described in Exodus 26:33? a. What happened to the veil in the Temple in Jerusalem when Christ died on the cross? Mark 15:38 b. Read Hebrews 10: How do we now have access to God? 2. DAY FOUR Comparative study: Articles of the Tabernacle and New Testament Application The Tabernacle is a picture of the relationship between God and His redeemed people. It shows us our need of daily cleansing and deliverance from the power of sin. As you study the following passages, explain how Christ fulfills the purpose of each item in the tabernacle. You may need to use a separate piece of paper. Brazen Altar Exodus 27:1-8. This was the place of sacrifice, where blood was shed to cover sin. Compare John 1:29, Matthew 26:28 and Hebrews 7:26, 27. Laver Exodus 30: This was the place designed for cleansing from the power of sin. Compare I Corinthians 6:11 and I John 1:7-9. Table of Showbread Exodus 25: Given to be a reminder of fellowship with God. Lampstand Exodus 25: The Lampstand was to burn continually in Israel. Compare John 1:6-9 and John 8:12. DAY FIVE Comparative study continued Altar of Exodus 30:1-10. Here Israel was to continually burn fragrant Incense incense to the Lord depicting their daily prayers. See Psalm 141:2. Compare Hebrews 7:25 and John

32 Arc of the Exodus 25: The arc spoke of God s presence with Israel. Covenant Read Hebrews 4: Mercy Seat Exodus 25: This was the covering over the Arc. The literal meaning of propitiation is Mercy Seat. Compare Romans 3:25 and I John 2:2; 4:10. Veil Exodus 26: The veil separated the Israelites from the holiness of God. Compare Matthew 27:50, 51 and Hebrews 10:19, 20. Read Exodus 31. Not every man was to be a priest. God had chosen some men to use skills of mind and hand to honor Him. Now the Israelite men and women are doing what God had directed them to do. 1. In Exodus 35:1-36:7 and chapter 39 find verses or phrases that indicate the following. Be sure to write down the references. a. God s enabling of the people to do the work. b. The people s willingness. c. The people s generosity. d. The people s unity. 39

40 e. The people s obedience. 2. The tabernacle, and later the temple, was to be central in the life and thinking of Israel. In all of its functions it represented what Jesus Christ would do for us: Christ in us, the hope of glory (Colossians 1:27). Finish the statement below from the following verses. I Peter 1:18, 19 reminds us that our salvation cannot be purchased with these perishable things, but that it comes through the Lord Jesus Christ. However, these items that are used in the tabernacle do remind us of the person of the Lord Jesus. The gold speaks of His deity; the wood, His humanity; the purple, His kingship; the scarlet, His suffering. Perhaps you may see other pictures of Jesus Christ. If so, share your thinking. 2. Skim/read Exodus 39 looking especially for the repeated phrase that indicates total obedience to God s instructions. Write it out. a. When the work of the tabernacle was completed, what two thing did Moses do? Read Exodus 39:43 (Orthodox Study Bible only up to 39:23). b. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the types and symbols of the tabernacle. What does John 1:14 say was seen when Christ dwelt among men? 4. What position and purpose did the cloud take during the rest of Israel s time in the wilderness? a. It is interesting to note that after the death of Moses, the cloud was not seen. In our study of Exodus we have seen how the redemption of Israel from slavery in Egypt was a foreshadowing of our redemption from sin.
