The boys team is (0-10) but has played some of the top teams in the conference to begin the year, and they have given extraordinary effort! Pete s Perspective By Peter Guerra Anyone who knows me knows my interest in computers. My favorite area is Computer Science, and it also happens to be the subject of this rant. Ever since I saw Star Wars as a boy, I have always had dreams of sentient computers. People have feared the prospect of machines taking over the world since the Industrial Revolution hit our shores, and film developments on the subject haven t helped matters much. Not that 2001 or the Terminator series were bad. That is quite the opposite, but these movies portrayed Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) as a creepy monster who could snap at anytime and kill humanity. However, even in these movies, Artificial Intelligence is motivated by one human creation, logic. The A.I. in Terminator saw the damage and hypocritical nature of humans, as well as, our destruction as the only real solution to its survival. Film makers suggest that with A.I., humans would be useless since A.I. would have no need for such thoughts. To this end, any mind that can think, be it human, animal, or computer will strive to protect its existence: self preservation. Now I won t lie, it is plausible for A.I. to go berserk and take over the world computer network. However, we must remember an A.I. is an actual intelligent thinking entity, and could do no more damage than if a person were in the same position. An A.I. could go insane, but so can people. A.I. is a tool, a way for us to achieve a level of intelligent thought and comprehension that is impossible with our biological frames. If we surpass fear and prejudice and succeed in creating Artificial Intelligence that doesn t kill us, it will advance humanity into a hyper expansive space age. The risk is real, but so are the benefits. 3 B ISON BULLET P AGE 3 Let It Go! By Roxana Coronado This year s Christmas program, FROZEN was on December 4, in the school auditorium. Mrs. Blasingame was in charge of the Christmas program again this year. Students who participated in this year s program were preschool through eighth grade. The high school choir, as well as, the band also played a part in the musical. The band students played their instruments to accompany the whole performance. Peter Guerra played the saxophone, David Whiteley played the trumpet, and Grecia Chapa played the clarinet. The theme for this year s Christmas program was based on the Disney movie, Frozen. Great job to everyone who made this year s Christmas program a chilling success.

4 P AGE 4 The Meaning of Chanukkah or Hanukkah By Coach Adams Chanukkah, the Hebrew festival of rededication, also known as the festival of lights, is an eight day festival beginning on the 25th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. Chanukkah is probably one of the best known Hebrew holidays, not because of any great religious significance, but because of its proximity to Christmas. Many people think of this holiday as the Jewish Christmas, however it is not. It has nothing to do with Christmas. Chanukkah remembers the rededication of the Temple. Antiochus IV, the successor of Alexander the Great, began to oppress the Jews severely. Two groups opposed Antiochus: a basically nationalistic group led by Mattathias the Hasmonean, his son Judah Maccabee, and a religious traditionalist group known as the Chasidim. They joined forces in a revolt. The revolution succeeded and the Temple was rededicated. Oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was supposed to burn throughout the night every night. There was only enough oil to burn for one day, yet miraculously, it burned for eight days, the time needed to prepare a fresh supply of oil for the menorah. An eight day festival was declared to commemorate this miracle. Each night, another candle is added from right to left (like the Hebrew language). On the eighth night, all nine candles are lit. It is traditional to eat fried foods. Latkes, "potato pancakes" are a favorite food eaten by all. Another tradition of the holiday is playing dreidel, a square top. Most people play for matchsticks, pennies, M&Ms or chocolate coins. This year Chanukkah begins on December 16, with the lighting of the servant candle and the first regular candle. The Most Wonderful Time By Madison Gibson Christmas is one of my favorite holidays. So many fun memories are from spending time with my family at Christmastime. One year, we made an entire family of snow people. My siblings and I love to have snowball fights, too. Then there are the times when all my family comes over and we simply enjoy each other s company for the day (along with the many delicious pies, cookies, and cups of hot chocolate!) My family always makes sure that everyone there knows how thankful for them we are and that we love each other. On Christmas Eve we read the Bible story from Matthew 1 and 2. It is an amazing feeling on Christmas day: being surrounded by all the people I love, just laughing and having a grand ole time. I hope that this Christmas you feel loved and make memories that will last you a lifetime. Merry Christmas!

6 B ISON BULLET P AGE 6 Hardesty Hoops Continued......for classiest and hardest working team. Congratulations gentlemen! The Ladies basketball unit is (6-4). The girls have wins over Yarbrough, Freedom; Darrouzett, Texas; Higgins, Texas and Balko twice! They have been working extremely hard and have improved their work ethic and attitude in route to a winning record at the break! Congratulations Lady Bison! Come out and support your team when they resume games in January! WE ARE HARDESTY! Jose Hernandez Makes All-District Football Team By Madison Gibson Congratulations to Jose Hernandez on his fantastic achievements in football this year! He has earned his spot on the All-District first team. He will be an offensive lineman. Also, Jose made the All- District academic team. He did this by maintaining one of the highest GPA s in the district during football season. Hardesty is proud of Jose for representing Hardesty so well! Growing Leaders Here at Home By Madison Gibson This year Alexis Faris and Madison Gibson, two Hardesty FFA members, attended the Advanced Leadership Development (ALD) conference in Tulsa on December 6 and 7. Over 300 members from around the state attended the conference. ALD is a conference designed to help junior and senior FFA members develop and refine their leadership skills. It was a blast! The speakers, Phil Boyte and Bill Cordes, emphasized one s perspective and how it affects a person s performance. They also spoke on the importance of good people skills. They tied the two together to make a new point by saying that really getting to know a person can give a different perspectiveand we are better together. Members learned how important building a network of acquaintances is to success. Bill Cordes introduced the theory, which states that ten percent of the people in a person s life are going to dislike them, ten percent will really like them, and the other 80 percent of people in someone s life will be neutral or indifferent toward them. This last group is the group the person can influence since they have no opinion on them yet. At the conference, Phil Boyte led students in an activity called Cross the Line during which he asked questions pertaining to major life events. If the scenario had happened to an individual he asked them to cross the line. This showed members that their circumstances are not so different or as bad off as others, and it also revealed to members that they do not stand alone in their problems. ALD was an amazing experience for both of us.

One food most everyone looks forward to during the winter season are the amazing sugar cookies. Even the delicious smell of them is likely to lure the family to the table. Here is a recipe from AllRecipes.com that is sure to bring your family together over the break. Hope you enjoy them! Ingredients: 1 ½ cups butter 2 cups white sugar 4 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 5 cups of flour 2 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon salt Directions; In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight). Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven.
