RENO'S ONLY RABB HALTS GDEON BBLES N SCHOOLS A one-man campaign by the rabbi of the only synagogue in Reno led a group of 30 Protestant ministers to reverse their stan don the distribution of Gideon bibles throughout Reno public moos, ' t was revealed this week.. The G ideon Society had asked permission to distribute their Bibles, containing the New Testament. Permission wa~ denied but the society was informed that if the support of the Reno clergy, including the Catholic Hierarchy and J ewish leaders, were obtained, the permission would be granted. The area Catholic Bishop favored the request and the Protestant clergy also strongly favored such "religious education." Then followed an appeal by R-abbi Baruch Treiger, spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-E and the only rabbi in the Ministerial Association. The clergy, in response, voted unanimously to reverse their stand and to write to the school board, reaffirming their support of the principle of separation of state and church. For the time being, it was understood, the question was decisively settled and no such religious education will be permitted in the public schools of N evada_ - From Jewish National Post
