2 FROM THE RABBI RABBI ELLIOT J. COSGROVE Finding Esther, Following Esther Visiting the Dead Sea Scroll exhibit at the Israel Museum on our December congregational trip to Israel, I was reminded of one of the great curiosities of biblical scholarship. Discovered in the Qumran Caves near the Dead Sea around the time the State of Israel was founded, the Dead Sea Scrolls date back to the third century before the Common Era. They contain the oldest manuscript evidence of many biblical texts. In fact, parts of every book of the Hebrew Bible have been found save one. Which one? The scroll of Esther. Why? Why would the story of Esther be excluded from this early canon of biblical literature? It is entirely possible that Esther s absence is due to chance, but the particularities and peculiarities of the book prompt us to search for another answer. First and foremost, the story of Esther takes place in the diaspora of Persia. While other biblical narratives also take place outside the Land of Israel (think of Joseph), Esther suggests a Jewish community at home in exile. Such a suggestion could have been beyond the bounds of acceptable discourse and certainly not considered appropriate in a sacred text. Who was Esther but a woman who passed as a gentile, so much so, that she married the foreign king in breach of not a few Jewish laws. Furthermore, Esther is the only biblical book that does not include God s name. On a practical level, this fact may have resulted in copies of the scroll of Esther not being stored or preserved in the same careful manner as every other biblical text, which could explain its absence from the caves at Qumran. Theologically speaking, God s absence from the story may have put the scroll outside the earliest biblical canon. Esther imagines a world governed by chance, not God a serious challenge to any religious community. Some scholars have suggested that the book of Esther is missing from the Dead Sea scrolls because its protagonist is a woman. Who knows what the norms of the all-male Qumran community were? It is easy to imagine such a community not accepting a woman s challenge to normative structures of authority. Maybe the scroll of Esther was excluded because Esther s version of womanhood was too much for the Qumran community to consider. We will never know why Esther was excluded from the earliest canon of the Hebrew Bible. We do know that ultimately it found its way into the canon and found pride of place in our post-biblical holiday of Purim. If nothing else, Purim prompts us to ask all sorts of questions we might not ask otherwise: What is our relationship to our gentile neighbors? How much shall we love them and be loved by them? Is anti-semitism always just around the corner? Can a Jew feel at home outside of the Land of Israel? Is God involved in our day-to-day lives? Is it time to reconsider how we view the dynamics of beauty, gender, and power? Uncomfortable as these questions may be, they are arguably more pressing today than ever. In our era, the questions prompted by Esther must not be sidestepped; they are questions our community must address. Fortunately for us, Esther will be very present in our synagogue on Purim! Join us on the evening of Wednesday, March 20, as we celebrate the holiday together, poke fun at ourselves and each other, and read an ancient narrative that continues to challenge us today. The voice of Esther must not be marginalized or excluded, rather the opposite. We must embrace the lessons of Esther for they direct us on the path to a brighter future. Behind the Scenes Over the past two years, the PAS Space Project has resulted in our community s move from a single building to a multi-site campus. At the same time, behind the scenes, the PAS administration has been working to consolidate our membership information and financial records into a single integrated database system. Just as our new and reimagined physical spaces will house the congregation into the next generation, our new software platform is designed to meet our recordkeeping needs for years into the future. While our expanded space will allow for congregants to participate comfortably in diverse worship, learning, and social events, the streamlined database will allow everyone to register for these opportunities with ease and to check on the status of their obligations and payments. For you, our congregants, the most significant feature of the new database is a refreshed member portal where you will be able to manage all the details of your synagogue membership. Once your information is in the system from your Hebrew name to your contact information to the upcoming events for which you (and your family members) have registered you will not have to re-enter it. When you register for new events, the system will fill in the routine information, including securely stored payment methods. With the help of a vendor and the guidance of Michael Masullo, our database manager, we did a detailed self-study to learn how every synagogue department uses our database, considering both the functions that we use it for now and the functions that we anticipate or dream of needing in the future. Using that information, our vendor assisted Mike in building a system tailored specifically to PAS, testing the system, and moving our data to it. The new system positions us at the forefront of technological capability in the synagogue world. With all that preparation, we anticipate a seamless switch to the new system. Yasher koach to Mike! We will begin using our new system, including the member portal, in early March. Once the system is live, member households for whom we have a valid address will receive login information. Those households were sent a message in February announcing the new system. If you have not received that message, please contact mmasullo@pasyn.org, so that we can update your contact information for the opening of the portal. In a physical move, it takes time to unpack and then to remember the new locations of objects we use daily. Inconveniently, a box of vitally important items ends up under a stack of heavy cartons. By the same token, we expect that there will be minor glitches in our seamless switch. We thank you in advance for your patience as we begin to use our database for the next generation. See you online! March-April 2019 Adar I-Adar II-Nisan

8 TRANSITION AT PAS Update Construction at the our 87th Street building is progressing well. The photos show new construction on the roof, where the ECC playground and the congregational sukkah will be located; framing on the second floor, where staff offices will be located; and the creation of a dramatic glass-enclosed central stairwell. Last month, staff and board members began regular meetings to plan the move from our temporary space back to 87th Street, as well as to anticipate the logistics of programming in the new space. The May/June Bulletin will have another update about the transition, including information about locations for summer Shabbat worship. 11 FROM THE EDUCATIONAL TEAM NIKI FLEISHMAN, DIRECTOR OF YOUTH ENGAGEMENT & PROGRAMMING The Importance of Showing Up As we come to the end of winter and look forward to spring, the Department of Youth Engagement is blooming with new opportunities, especially for our teens. With spring come holidays that share the important themes of overcoming hardship and being present. While many Jewish holidays and also Shabbat incorporate remembrance and taking the time to reflect on our stories, Passover is unique because it requires us to reenact our remembrance in a long form: the Seder. The Seder teaches us that it s not enough to remember; we must also show up. We don t fulfill the commandments of Passover unless we re present and engaged in the Seder. As educators at PAS, we understand the importance of teaching Jews of all ages to show up year-round, not just at Passover. The Department of Youth Engagement creates multiple opportunities for our teens to do just that! With our weekly Food Pantry performing acts of kindness, our classes with the rabbis, and fun monthly adventures, we constantly provide multiple ways for our teens to be involved in Jewish life. Over 150 teens engage in ideas in weekly and monthly classes with our rabbis, gain volunteer experience at our weekly Food Pantry, socialize with peers and their parents at monthly Shabbat afternoon schmoozes at Rabbi Cosgrove s home, develop skills and poise with the Rock Band and Parkapellas, and explore Jewish culture and history on teen travel experiences. April is a special month for PAS teens as we have our annual Teen Appreciation Shabbat, taking place this year on Friday evening, April 5. Teens will take roles in leading Kabbalat Shabbat, and both the Parkapellas (a cappella group) and the PAS Rock Band will participate in the service. The teens will display their hard work and commitment to our programs, and we will have the opportunity to honor them for their dedication. We will also offer farewell blessings to our seniors as they prepare to graduate in May and go on to college or to gap years in Israel and elsewhere. We live in a world where many Jewish teens do not set as high a priority on developing and appreciating their Jewish identity as on other agendas. Teen Appreciation Shabbat demonstrates that at PAS we are inspiring and creating the next generation of young adult Jewish leaders through our enriching classes, programs, outings and volunteer projects. A new project this year is that teens will participate in a Challah Bake to make the challahs that will be served at the Teen Appreciation Shabbat family dinner. We hope that beyond their proud parents, many members of the congregation will come to acknowledge our teens as we honor and applaud them for showing up, learning, and practicing social justice. We invite you all to join us at Teen Appreciation Shabbat. As Passover teaches us, it s not enough to remember; we must show up and show our support! March-April 2019 Adar I-Adar II-Nisan

21 YOUTH EDUCATION & EVENTS POSTCARD FROM CAMP Camp Yavneh You Can t Replicate the Ruach! BY BENNETT S. I love Camp Yavneh, which is located in Northwood, New Hampshire. It is a Jewish camp that includes sports, dance, art, music, swimming and also Jewish classes, lots of Israel programs and dancing, going-ontrip days, swimming in the lake, and Zimriyah, our song competition between the different age groups (called eidot in Hebrew). Some of my favorite activities at camp are elective activities (Chugim) such as baseball, basketball, sailing, and using the Kangaroo trampoline. At Yavneh we call it the Kang-a-ruach! One of the unique parts of Yavneh is that we have tefillot every morning, have many announcements in Hebrew, and we observe Shabbat. It was new for me and I had to learn not to turn on and off lights and a bunch of new songs. But I loved it and it brought me closer to my friends and to my Jewish community. It also prepared me for being in Israel on the PAS trip. I can't wait for my brother Isaac to join me the summer after next and I would love to have other PAS kids come and join me! BY CAROLINE A. Why do I love Camp Yavneh? So many reasons starting with waking up every morning, knowing it's going to be a great day! The way I feel when I am there is like no way I've ever felt before. Shabbat is filled with rest, prayer, and good food all through the day, and it always ends with a fun Havdalah party, starting the new week off right. Embracing our individual Jewish identities as a community makes everyone feel like they are home. My favorite activity at camp is art because we get to do a variety of cool projects. I made silver jewelry and an "ugly doll," and I wove a tapestry that hung on my bunk. I also enjoy playing sports such as basketball and tennis, and musical activities like drum circles. About the only thing at camp that I don't absolutely love is swimming in the lake, because I get very cold. But many people think the lake is the highlight of camp. My younger sister Helena loves it! Summer at Camp Yavneh makes me feel happy and at home with my camp family. If you are exploring options for your child s next summer adventure, and if you have any questions, please contact Jewish Camping Committee chair Lynne Bermont at lynnebermont@yahoo.com or PAS Director of Youth Engagement Niki Fleishman at youth@pasyn.org March-April 2019 Adar I-Adar II-Nisan

28 A Look Back: The 2018 Congregational Trip to Israel With 452 participants, the PAS Congregational Trip to Israel last December was the largest visit to Israel ever by a single synagogue. Chaired by Darcy Dalton and Amy Steiner, this multifaceted journey offered diverse experiences to five different tracks geared to groups from young families to seasoned adult learners. Jordan Solomon summed up his family s experience in these words: The trip established a powerful and loving relationship between my kids and Israel in a way I couldn't have imagined, taking it from conceptual to real and passionate. They will never forget this trip and it will be the backbone of their future perspective on the Jewish experience and people. Moreover, it deepened their relationship with PAS, creating lasting bonds with other kids at the Congregational School and with the clergy and staff that will enhance their belief that PAS is part of our extended home and family. For us as parents and adults, it rejuvenated our love of Israel and the shul. Watch for more coverage of the PAS community s engagement with Israel in the May/June Bulletin, when we will acknowledge Yom HaAtzma ut and Israel at 71! 28 Park Avenue Synagogue Bulletin
