4 A M e s s a g e f r o m t h e R a b b i & S y n a g o g u e P r e s i d e n t Dear Congregants, What does God ask of you? Only to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8) I love Micah s pithy statement. Do justice and love kindness that s how to maintain a healthy community. Walk humbly with your God that s how to make a connection to the divine. You won t feel a connection if you are full of yourself. You have to leave some room for God. Micah s declaration also helps to explain why the synagogue exists. Some individuals may think that all they need is Facebook for relationships and entertainment, but we know that if we want to live a moral and spiritual life, we need something more. We need a real, face-to-face community of people who can strengthen our commitments. Of course, we want to come together to eat, laugh and enjoy ourselves! But the primary reason why CBJ offers a variety of programs and events is that we want to learn how to fulfill our mission as Jews and be given ample opportunities to do so. I look forward to welcoming you to these engaging and enriching programs throughout the year. Our congregation is in existence because of the community that has been created by prayer, study and social programs. SHABBAT...A GIFT TO YOURSELF The experience of Shabbat is an experience of and for a lifetime. It is a gift you will give yourself and one which you will want to share. FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICES Our Friday evening service, which includes Kabbalat Shabbat and Maariv, begins at 7:30 pm. Responsive English readings are incorporated as part of the Friday night service. This service usually is less than an hour in length. SHABBAT MORNING SERVICES In our main sanctuary, Shabbat morning services begin at 9:30 am and concludes at noon. GAN SHABBAT Gan Shabbat offers a participatory Shabbat Service for families with children, ages 9 and under. Our service is filled with singing, stories and learning. We meet every Shabbat morning in the Beit Midrash on the Religious School level. Our service begins at 10:30 am and concludes around 11:30 am. After Gan Shabbat all families are encouraged to join the main service and the community Kiddush. Junior congregation Junior Congregation is a Shabbat service for kids, run by kids ages Our service offers a fun atmosphere in which to learn Shabbat morning tefillot (prayers), and engage in meaningful Jewish learning and interactive discussions. Students will establish a more meaningful relationship with Jewish values and prayers through fun interactive games, themed-shabbat services, stories, and role play. Participants will end the morning in the Robbins sanctuary where they help lead Ein Keloheinu, Aleinu, and Adon Olam on non-b nai Mitzvah mornings. ALTERNATIVE INTERPRETIVE SHABBAT MINYAN Join us on Shabbat morning at 10:30 am, as Norm Kurtz facilitates this Shabbat morning service. We will examine the structure of the prayer service, learn the major prayers, engage in a discussion about the weekly Torah portion and become more comfortable with the choreography and customs of the Shabbat morning service. 7 Israel Committee For more information, please contact Cathy Feiger at Congregation Beth Judea has continually demonstrated its support of Klal Yisrael or the Community of Israel because we see ourselves as a part of the larger worldwide Jewish community. Naturally, the State of Israel is central to this vision. We embrace Israel from an historical, spiritual, educational, and cultural basis at the synagogue and in our homes. The role of the Israel Committee is to maintain awareness and support of Israel among our congregants. We intend to accomplish this by providing news of what is happening in Israel via internet website links, planning congregational trips to Israel and providing speakers at the synagogue to discuss topics related to Israel. Additionally, we hope to help congregants hone their advocacy skills on behalf of Israel and to encourage them to contact the media and our elected representatives to garner their support of Israel. We encourage congregants to join various organizations that vigorously work on behalf of Israel and the Jewish people. The committee is tentatively scheduled to meet on the first Thursday of the month at the synagogue immediately following evening minyan. 8 Social Action For more information, contact Cathy Feiger at or (847) The Social Action Committee generally meets the second Wednesday of each month at 8:00 p.m. or directly following minyan at the synagogue. SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE sponsors many Tikkun Olam Mitzvah Day programs to spark the spirit within the Synagogue and community. We invite you to join us for fun and to volunteer to perform a mitzvah! PADS PROGRAM Get involved with the PADS program serving food for the homeless once a month. TIKKUN OLAM MITZVAH DAY, Maot Chitim 5778 Maot Chitim of Greater Chicago delivers kosher holiday food boxes to Jewish familis in need who live in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs. Volunteers are needed to assemble boxes, pack perishable and non-perishable food and deliver these boxes to the recipients so that those less fortunate in our community may observe the hoidays in a traditional and dignified manner. VOLUNTEER TO READ OR SING TO THE ELDERLY OR DISABLED (Date TBD) PACKING PACKAGES FOR OUR SOLDIERS (Date TBD) Page 8 MT Nesters For programming information, contact Carol Schechter at or Sam Chiprin at The MT Nesters is a group comprised of seniors, the majority of which are members of Congregation Beth Judea, but membership is open to the community. The group meets at the synagogue once a month and continues to celebrate many years of coordinating activities for seniors in our community. Activities are normally planned for the Second Sunday of each month and may include a Chanukah Party, an Evening with the Clergy, taking in a Theatre play, a visit to a museum, a night at Ravinia, hosting professional entertainment, having an Educational/Cultural program, and sometimes just an informal get together for coffee. Current annual dues are free for the first year if you are a member of Beth Judea and then only $20.00 per year per person (no senior discount).

Every Shabbat Saturday Morning, 10:30 am Tot Shabbat with Brad Egel: Welcome Shabbat with a service geared to the younger set as Brad Egel leads tots and their families in songs and stories. Geared especially for toddlers, kids, parents and grandparents. Approximately once a month, on Shabbat Friday Evening from 6:15 pm 7:00 pm. Kadinkers Our youngest youth program is for our 3rd-5th graders. We meet once a month for a variety of fun outings. This year we have an apple picking trip in October, minute to win it in November, trampolines and tree making in January, and even a gymnastics trip in March. We also offer free open Youth House care every Tuesday before Hebrew School!!! Kadima Our 6th-8th grade middle school youth group continues to fun of Kadinkers but also begins to bring on leadership roles. With programs not only after Hebrew School but also on Saturday nights Kadima members get to take part in so much more. Some programs planned for Kadima this year include apple picking and a corn maze bonfire in October, a trip to Comedy Sportz in the city in November, an entire weekend away at the Persltein Resort at Camp Chi in December, a trampoline trip in January, snow tubing in February, a regional Kadima day in March, and even an Ikea scavenger hunt in April!!! STAY UP TO DATE WITH ALL CBJ YOUTH PROGRAMS BY VIEWING OUR CALENDAR TINYURL.COM/BJUSYCALENDAR BJUSY CHUSY Region Chapter of the year 2017 International Chapter of the Year Nominee CBJ s award winning youth program for high school aged teens. BJUSY meets on most Tuesdays, usually from 7:30 9:15 pm. USYers gather together to focus on topics such as religion, Israel, and charity along with social activities. BJUSY programs are planned and run by the USYers, led by the BJUSY executive and general boards. USYers also have the opportunity to attend our monthly teen pray and plays. These creative minyanim are Shabbat morning or evening services with an activity and a theme and are entirely teen led. The themes allow a fresh look each month at the various Shabbat services. Our high shool youth programs helps to forge friendships that last a lifetime and build our leaders for tomorrow. We meet nearly every week and sometimes multiple times in a week, we even have a basketball team that took 2nd place in the league last year!. WEEKLY CLASSES Diving Into Talmud: Grappling with Life, Law and Innovation Sunday mornings at 8 am Taught by Orin Rotman The Talmud is a profoundly rich compilation of wisdom that has continued relevance to our contemporary search for meaning. It addresses eternal questions of ethics, human nature and our relationship to the Divine. Participate in a lively discussion of the Talmud and its relevance for us today. No prior knowledge required and texts will be provided. SATURDAY SHABBAT MORNINGS Weekly Parsha Study Shabbat Torah/Haftarah Study Every Shabbat Saturday Morning at 9:00 am Led by Orin Rotman Weekly study to discuss the parsha of the week. We will discuss questions raised by the participants. (Artscroll Schottenstein edition is used for the class) Israel Matters Tuesday mornings after minyan (8:30 9:15 am) Taught by Hazzan Weisberg Join Hazzan Weisberg in gaining a better understanding of the newest challenges and opportunities arising for Israel as well as its neighbors. Andy is an alumnus of Project Otzma, the Conservative Yeshiva, and the Pardes Educators Programs and Kollel, receiving smicha in 2004 from Rabbis Daniel Landes and Aryeh Strikosky. He holds a B.A. in American Studies and M.A. in Educational Administration from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from Ben Gurion University of the Negev. He also teaches pizza-making and cooking science, caters small events, and hosts a periodic pop-up restaurant at a local soupkitchen.
