4 & BWDJSC Walk Wednesday 23 rd May 2018 Nine two legged animals and two four legged animals set off from the John Bunyan pub in Wheathampstead for a four mile walk. We went past the Crooked Chimney (an 18 th century pub) and through the grand Brocket Hall estate and we were photographed with the splendid Brocket Hall in background. Two and a half hours later we arrived back at the John Bunyan for a welcome drink and lunch. Thank you to Brian and Martin for organising the walk and to David for leading the way. 5 Our visit to the Globe on Wednesday 22 nd May was a great day out. Our coach dropped us off with just a few minutes walk from the t Globe and we enjoyed a very welcome tea, coffee and rather large cookies at the Swan Restaurant. We were in luck because on the day of the visit rehearsals were taking place for THE TWO NOBEL KINSMEN, which was a real treat to sit and watch. At the end of the tour there was an opportunity to visit the Globe s extensive exhibition. The weather was brilliant and made for a perfect afternoon at leisure on the South Bank. 6 On 22nd April we took a group of 49 people to the Royal Albert Hall to see the excellent Royal Philharmonic Orchestra's matinee performance of "Film Music Gala featuring the themes from Titanic, Chariots of Fire, Back to the Future, Star Trek, the Magnificent Seven and Star Wars to name but a few. This was a very enjoyable afternoon and following on from this we have already reserved 50 front arena seats in one block at the Royal Albert Hall for the Royal Philharmonic's performance of "Let's Face The Music", a tribute to the great musicals with four star vocalists. We hope you will join us for this sensational Sunday matinee show including classic songs from Singing in the Rain, West Side Story, The Sound of Music and many others. The date is Sunday 17th March 2019 and we will be giving the full details and taking bookings towards the end of this year. Brian

7 ST ALBANS JEWISH WOMEN S FORUM The St Albans Jewish Women s Forum is a unique group, which draws its members from all sections of the community. Members belong to any of the local synagogues or to none at all. The only qualification for membership, in fact, is that you should be Jewish and a woman! The age range is also fairly wide, and our activities include social, cultural, welfare and fund-raising for our chosen charities. The group usually meets monthly in members homes. June July August Weather permitting; we ll be putting on our stout shoes for our annual summer walk. Don t worry, it will only be a gentle ramble, not a tough hike, and we will be taking in the many new plantings at Heartwood Forest, Sandridge, since our last visit there. A Book Sale with a Twist! Last year s book sale was so popular, as well as raising quite a substantial amount for our charitable funds that we decided to do it again, but with an extra gimmick. Bring along the books you have read and no longer want, but pick your favourite and before it goes on the sale table, tell us why you liked it and why you think we ought to buy it. And because the date coincides almost exactly with Jewish Care s Great Jewish Bake Day, we are also asking you to bake (or bring shop-bought) cakes for sale on the evening, either whole to take away, or by the slice to enjoy with your post-meeting cuppa, with the proceeds going to Jewish Care. 19 St Albans Masorti Synagogue A home for Jewish Herts SAMS Bridge Club is held the first Thursday of each calendar month pm, all abilities welcome. Do please let us know if you are planning to come along. SAMS Book Group Tuesday 3 rd July 8.00pm We will be discussing Three Things about Elsie by Joanne Cannon. This is described as a psychological drama with a hint of mystery about our elders and betters. All welcome for coffee, cake and a good discussion but for security reasons please let us know you are coming. Our discussions are very lively and we don t just stick to talking about books we somehow get onto talking about films, holidays, and whatever else crops up. So don t feel you have to have read the current book, it s not a prerequisite of an enjoyable evening! Please do come along and share your thoughts with us over a cuppa and some nosh. 21 Volunteering is not just a way to give back to your community or fill your time. It can be a lifechanging experience and, provided that you choose the right volunteering opportunity; it can bring immense benefits to you too, in addition to the organisation you are helping. If you had a Jewish family member living in London , or are interested in learning more about a new project to find and preserve stories of London Jewry in the First World War. We would love to know if you have family stories, photographs, medals, letters or other items relating to the period or if you would like to volunteer to help others with research and uploading information. With your help, we will create a lasting archive of stories to honour and remember London s Jewish community, and its contribution to the war effort, a century ago.
