1 Rodef Sholom Temple rodefsholomtemple.org The Messenger December January Rabbi s Message - Rabbi Gilah Dror Being Jewish: Body and Soul Dear Friends, Did you ever wonder why we had Yoga Shacharit [Yoga Morning Blessings] at Rodef Sholom Temple? The answer is that the full extent of Jewish wisdom and tradition encompasses not just belief, not just history, and not just community. The full extent of Jewish wisdom and practice relates to both body and soul. Religious Services Monday and Thursday: 7:45 AM Friday Evening: 6:00 PM, unless otherwise noted Shabbat Morning: 9:30 AM Office Hours Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: 9:00AM 5:00 PM Friday: 9:00 AM 3:00 PM Closed Wednesday Other hours by appointment Rodef Sholom Temple 401 City Center Blvd. Newport News, VA (757) If you are curious about the powerful nexus of yoga and Jewish tradition, I recommend Edith Brotman s book: Mussar Yoga: Blending an Ancient Jewish Spiritual Practice with Yoga to Transform Body and Soul. The book begins with a brief history of both Mussar and of yoga. Mussar is a Jewish concept signifying inner instruction. Its origins go back to Jewish writings in the eighth century. Brotman writes: As yoga reflects like a mirror, Mussar enlarges and clarifies like a microscope Mussar instructs on how to look at your inner life. In Judaism, as in yoga, we do not deny our physicality. Rather, we explore the relationship of the totality of our being body and soul. Mussar yoga suggests a practice of exploring thirteen spiritual traits, and of examining how they play out in our day-to-day lives. That is to say, we should explore one particular trait each week in rotation. And, when we have completed the thirteen-week cycle, we circle around to the beginning once again for a new round of exploration. The thirteen traits are: Truth, Courage, Humility, Order, Nonjudgmen, Zeal, Simplicity, Equanimity, Generosity, Silence, Gratitude, Loving-Kindness and Compassion; and finally, Trust. Each of the traits is associated with simple yoga poses that enrich and inform our spiritual quest. However, yoga is not the only way in which to connect body and soul in Judaism. In our High Holy Day Machzor, Lev Shalem (p. 11), we learn, in relation to the Amidah prayer: The Babylonian Talmud encourages us to pay attention to the movement of each of our vertebrae as we bow, enabling us to focus on the miracle of our bodies construction. We stand up straight when we reach God s name, for we speak to God face to face (Berakhot 28b). The Talmud confined bowing to the beginning and end of this first b rakhah and to the beginning and end of the next-tolast b rakhah, which thanks God for the gift of life (Berakhot 34b). I hope you will look into the very interesting explication of the potential embodied in the combination of the practice of yoga with the practice of Mussar. Then, consider, if you will, how a system of physical mitzvoth and traditions both ritual and ethical can serve as powerful spiritual reminders of our most sacred values, of our highest goals, and of our eternal hopes. I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a very happy Chanukah! Rabbi Gilah Dror December January 2019

3 President s Message As I pen this column, it is the day before Thanksgiving. As I reflect on the year since last Thanksgiving, I find so many things to be thankful for, both in my personal and professional lives. One of the primary things that I m so thankful and grateful for is our beautiful new building and the coming together of our community. However, the events of Saturday, Oct. 27, will forever change our lives and therefore, the way we go about and think about what, prior to Oct. 27, was fairly commonplace. In the week following the tragedy in Pittsburgh, Rodef Sholom leadership met and immediately took action to arrange for uniformed off-duty Newport News police, with a marked vehicle, to be stationed at our entrance whenever we hold services as well as when Sunday School is in session. This added layer of security comes with a monetary cost, and you have probably already received an stating that your Board voted to add a suggested security fee of $100 per household to your dues to carry us through the end of our fiscal year, which ends on June 30, During budget deliberations in the spring, we will look at how to fund this expenditure for the long-term. On Sunday, Nov.18, the UJC invited a security expert from the Secure Community Network to speak at 3 sessions, addressing topics such as how to respond in an active shooter scenario, what should be part of a security plan, and how to recognize suspicious behavior. Many ideas were discussed that day with the community as a whole, and these discussions will continue within each synagogue and the UJC, as we all strive to decide what is best for our membership or congregation. The UJC Campus Security Committee will be meeting very soon to discuss campus-wide security measures in light of a recentl- awarded grant from the Department of Homeland Security You ve probably heard the phrase, it s the new normal in any of hundreds of applications, and I hate to be accused of using a cliché, but post- Oct. 27, we really do have a new normal when it comes to security at places of worship and particularly Jewish synagogues. Just today, I read an article that talked about the locking of doors in a synagogue during services, something that, at least in this country, had never been imagined, but now it s a topic of discussion. I will do my best to keep you apprised of the steps that Rodef Sholom Temple leadership is taking as we try to find the best answer(s) for our congregation. My wish at this time of year is that we all have a very healthy and Happy Hanukkah with family and friends and be kind to each other! 4 4 RST Education The whole RST religious school had offcampus field trips on October 14th. Top left: The Hillel-In-Training (HIT) and Confirmation classes had one of their several Out of the Box events at a Maccabeats concert in Richmond. The students enjoyed the Jewish a capella group and also enjoyed posing with some of the singers after the concert. New member Amanda Lowitz (front row, left) and parents Jill Hyman and Laura Epstein Rodef chaperoned Sholom the group s Temple outing. The post- b nai mitzvah students next Out of the Box will be a Jewish foods cooking class in the RST kitchen. The HIT Class curriculum this year is Jewish arts and culture. Top right and middle: On the same day, grades 7 and below went to Buckroe Beach for a Days of Creation Scavenger Hunt and Make and Take art project. When the students are in school on campus, the new RST classrooms in the new synagogue contain mobile teacher carts so that the multi-purpose nature of the space can be utilized for other events from time-to-time. Routine class sessions allow for art work and desk work as well. Shown here, Tanya Lacey s Early Childhood class learns about Tikun Olam (above left). Dr. Kim Gipson s class learns about the Tower Of Babel before building towers in silence and then again while communicating with each other (above right).
