1 rodefsholomtemple.org The Messenger August - September Rabbi s Message - Rabbi Gilah Dror Temple Doors & Personal Doors Dear Friends, Our doors are open, and RST is beginning a new chapter in its history! This will be our very first Rosh HaShana in the new Temple building. As a congregation, we are new and we are old. We are refreshed, and we are ever so grateful for our rich heritage. Religious Services Monday and Thursday: 7:45 AM Friday Evening: 6:00 PM, unless otherwise noted Shabbat Morning: 9:30 AM Office Hours Monday, Tuesday & Thursday: 9:00AM 5:00 PM Friday: 9:00 AM 3:00 PM Closed Wednesday Other hours by appointment 401 City Center Blvd. Newport News, VA (757) Thank you to all who gave so much of their time, energy, creativity, talents and resources to help us reach this awesome time and place! It has truly been a labor of love! And I look forward to seeing you all in the holy Sanctuary we have constructed together. Now I hope and trust that not only the doors of the Temple are open, but that our own personal doors are open as well. I hope and trust that our hearts and minds-the spiritual doors of our soul - are open to the possibility that our newly-constructed Temple will now contribute back to us. As we planned and built our new building, we lent our individual and collective talents to the task of creating a holy structure. Now, our new Temple can serve us, serving as a vehicle for enhancing our personal and communal spiritual growth and connection. Now, we have the opportunity to lend our individual and collective talents to making the place that inspires us, that connects us, that supports our growth and our learning. Our new Temple can give added depth and meaning to our individual and collective Jewish lives. Just as the physical building required our personal contribution, so does the life of the congregation require our personal contribution. Just as our creativity, our perspective, and our support were essential for the creation of an inspiring building, so does the life of our congregation depend on our personal involvement and on our individual creativity and inspiration. I hope and trust that you will breathe life and creativity into our wonderful new spiritual space! In our prayers, we pray for God to help us keep the doors of the soul open to new experiences, to deepening levels of understanding and to new levels of meaning in life. We say: My God, open my heart to Your Torah. We say: Adonai, open my lips that my mouth may utter Your praise. If we keep the doors of our soul open, we can all hope to be infused with new life, with new hope, and with new love. I take this opportunity to wish you and your loved ones a Shana Tova U metukah a sweet and a good year, filled with blessings, with happiness and with joy. Shana Tova! Rabbi Dror August - September 2018

3 President s Message Greetings! It s been a while since I penned a Messenger column, given all that s recently taken place in the wonderful world of Rodef Sholom Temple. What more can be said about the fantastic Dedication Weekend that we all celebrated on May 25, 26 and 27. So many members volunteered thousands of hours to bring to fruition what was only a dream for many years. We now have a beautiful building, and if you haven t yet come to visit, please make it a point to do so, where we ve already celebrated the first of many b nei mitzvahs with many more to come and have realized how wonderful and flexible our new social hall space can be. Thank you so much to everyone who had a hand in making our dream come true. However, a synagogue is not about the bricks and mortar that created the structure, but it s the people, old and young, who come to services, events, religious school and all of the myriad offerings that are. If you haven t been by in a while, please come join us and experience how wonderful it is to be a part of the RST community. Since I m on the topic of visiting the campus, mark your calendars for our Open House along with our BBQ and Borchu which will be held on Aug. 10 more details to follow. As you probably recall, we suspended this annual event while we were in the process of constructing our new building, but this favorite event is back and better than ever and please bring a friend to show off our new building. It s hard to believe, but the High Holidays are just around the corner early this year! Erev Rosh Hashannah is Sept. 9, and on Sept.1 at 9:00 p.m. you definitely do not want to miss the Selichot service, which this year will be hosted by Rodef Sholom Temple. We ve got a very meaningful and thought-provoking subject planned for the service, and I hope to see everyone there. See the ad in this issue! At our annual meeting in June, we sadly said goodbye to two hardworking Board members Adam Deyoung and Elina Blaha - and also welcomed two new Board members, Brian Diamond and Chip Goldstein; Chip was also elected as our Treasurer. Welcome to Brian and Chip, and I know that Adam and Elina will still be active in our community. That s about all for now; I look forward to seeing you all during the High Holidays in our incredible new sanctuary! Have a safe, healthy and happy summer b Shalom Steve Shapiro 3 Open-House (Bring a Visitor!) Annual BBQ and Borchu Enjoy food, community, and services and explore our new synagogue! 6 6 OBSERVATIONS ON DEDICATION WEEKEND By Stan Glasofer On May 25th, 26th, and 27th, 2018 we celebrated our moving into our new Temple on City Center Boulevard. Looking at the faces of the numerous members who were there (including those who traveled many miles to return), it was the truest of community simchas. Our beautiful new home is well-lit, but judging from the smiles, it was as if the sun reflected on each person s face. Among us, there were persons who are new to Rodef Sholom and people who remember being in the 32nd Street synagogue and our moving to Whealton Road. As we put on our new kippot, commemorating this occasion, Buddy David showed off to grandson Reilly the kippah he received when we moved into the new sanctuary on Whealton Road. We had newborn babies present at this dedication, and we had at least one member over one hundred years old, Edith Kopp Spritzer. Our celebration was, in true Rodef Sholom tradition, truly participatory, with members placing mezzuzot, escorting the Torah scrolls into the sanctuary, sharing in the services, and being recognized for their individual and group efforts to help us to successfully arrive at this time. Our festivity was augmented with the performances of our Rodef Sholom Singers, our Religious School students and our personal cheerleader, Sh mama, also known as Tess Goldblatt. But the entire weekend can be best summed up by the never-ending smile of Rabbi Dror. That smile expressed the feelings of all our congregants. Dedication photos taken by Bob Harper

9 Rodef Sholom Damsky Memorial Golf Tournament 9 Dozens of sponsors, dozens of prize drawings, and thousands of dollars raised! The 8th Annual, Rodef Sholom Temple Golf Classic in Memory of Martin Damsky was definitely a huge success! Tournament Chair Kenny Murov welcomed 64 golfers on Sunday morning, June 24th, to Kingsmill Resort s beautiful Woods Course. The weather was perfect throughout the day. Dozens of generous sponsors & donors (secured by committee members Ralph Goldstein Co-Chair, Barbara Gordon, Josh David, Howard Waters, Herb Garfinkel and Steve Shapiro) assured that the teams competed in a first-rate event. Also, each player received a very special Goodie Bag full of useful swag and golf discount coupons, compliments of State Farm agents Herb Garfinkel and A.J. Fraley. Following the golf, the players were treated to an outstanding lunch and prize presentations at Kingsmill s Mounts Bay Recreation Center. A total of $12,000 was raised, the largest amount in the history of The Damsky. Friedman for preparing and serving the delicious dairy lunch. And more special thanks to Judie Kavit for the attractive sponsor signs. And as always, the indispensible Tess Goldblatt held it all together. The tournament always gets rave reviews from the participants, and this year was no different. Many veteran golfers have said that The Damsky is one of the best local tournaments that they play all year long and promise that they intend to continue playing each year. Thanks again to all those whose work achieves such positive feedback. 11 Ritual Committee Article 11 Preparation for the High Holy Days Yes, of course, like everyone else, I look forward to enjoying Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur in our wonderful new sanctuary. Just as significant to me is the fact we will be inside a complete building of our own. I would also like to mention some other improvements from other years, including our previous home at Whealton Road. The chairs are so comfortable,i could sit through an entire Yom Kippur Service. The lighting and sound systems are just about perfect. Between the ramps to the ark and an adjustable reading table, everyone can participate in the service, which brings me to my first pitch: Don t be shy about accepting an honor. All parts of the sanctuary are now readily accessible. We hope to see as many people as possible participate, not just during the High Holy Days, but all year long. Back to the subject of sitting: Everyone s attention can fade at some point during the long services. We have two new options for both young and old. We really do love the sound of future generations becoming comfortable with the service, but sometimes their parents need a break. If you both need some time to move around and release pent-up energy, there is now a quiet room where you and your little one can go to release the energy while still taking in the service. For those who want a bit of quiet time for personal reflection and inner thoughts, I recommend the new memorial room. I would be remiss if I did not start the New Year with a pitch: We encourage everyone to try and attend more services and get involved in synagogue activities, so please come enjoy the new facilities and plan to get more involved in the coming year. Or, as they say at certain voting stations: Come Early and Come Often. L shanah Tova Steve Meyerson Ritual Committee Chair August - September 2018

21 RST Sisterhood 21 The information for receiving this coming year s New Year s Greeting book/congregational directory, along with information about putting an ad in the book, is in the mail. Please return the forms as shown on each letter by the deadline of Friday, August 17, We are working on a very tight schedule this year because Rosh Hashanah begins on Sept. 9th, and we d like to have the directory in your hands by then. Forms are also available on the RST website. Please contact Martha Katz-Hyman (mbkatzhyman@juno.com) with any questions. RST Men s Club Atid means future in Hebrew. As Women s League for Conservative Judaism enters its second century, Torah Fund begins its 77th year, and the State of Israel enters its 71st, we look forward with joy to our future together with you. The 5779 Torah Fund pin envelopes the Hebrew word for future (atid) with a stylized Magen David. It represents our wish for a distinctly Jewish future, for ourselves as individuals, our families, and our communities. The seminaries of the Conservative/Masorti Movement, which we support through Torah Fund, are doing the great work that helps us navigate our future together, as one people. And our sisterhoods provide the social and educational networks the extended family that helps us go forward into our future as Jewish women, with confidence. Receive the Torah Fund pin for 5779 as a gift to you in recognition of your generous support at the Benefactor level. Contact Martha Katz-Hyman if you wish to be a Torah Fund Benefactor this coming year. You will have your pin in time for the High Holy Days. And don t forget that you can send beautiful Torah Fund cards to congregants, friends and relatives and support Torah Fund in that way as well. Cards are $5.00 each and include postage. Contact Tova Warren, who will be pleased to send them for you. Thank you for your continued support of Torah Fund! Men s Club members had a meaningful and restful weekend retreat with other clubs in the Seaboard Region on June 8-10 at Capital Camps in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. They enjoyed great company, programming, food and fun. Ed Olshansky, Rick Goldblatt, and Bill Becker from the Rodef Sholom Temple Men s Club were in attendance. August - September 2018

Sinai, and what I want to say is: I see G-d everywhere --- through my prayers, in my heart, I seek to join in the dance, the rhythm of life, the source of our energy, G-d. Judaism has brought me closer to G-d. Torah helps me have a more direct connection to G-d. The opportunity to read Torah, interpret it, and question is refreshing compared to other religions that do not give direct access and try to shape thought through another. Today I stand before you completing the thread that was left unwoven- looking into the tapestry and I feel connected to past, present and future. From my first mikvah which symbolizes a clean break from my non-jewish past, to the foot of Mount Sinai, I can truly say my spirit is home, my spirit is safe. Here we are at the foot of Mt. Sinai, and what we want to say is: We are different people, we came from different backgrounds and have had different life experiences, but together as a Jewish family we arrive home. Here we are at the foot of Mount Sinai immersed in blessings before our family and friends, ever present in the journey, every journey of our people. Our connection to G-d and the Torah His teachingis what has defined us from generation to generation. Bonnie Brooks, Alex Dorfman, Allen Fraley, Quentin Kidd, Christina Landrum, Celia Rinaldo, and Julie Strouse

23 Seven adults became Bar/Bat Mitzvah on the first day of Shavuot. Besides doing an amazing job chanting from the Torah, they gave moving speeches and wrote a class prayer together. Here are some of those writings: Inspired and humbled by my Torah Reading the Torah is almost a magical experience. Just looking at the ancient text that came from the highest authority and endured for millennials - is special, but much more so to be able to navigate through it. portion, Exodus 19: 1-6, I wrote this free-verse poem. I Am Grateful by: Julie Strouse 23 As I was preparing for this event, I realized that I am probably the first in my generation in our family to read the Torah after a few that have not been able to do so. My grandparents grew up surrounded by pogroms and by the time they came of age, the Russian Revolution already took hold, and the socialists regime outright rejected religious freedoms. My parents and later I grew up under the Communist government that almost entirely eradicated religious teachings. But I do know that my mother s grandfather was a very respected Jewish scholar. He is the one I often think of when it comes to Judaism. Not only he lost some of his children to the war against the Nazis, not only he had to witness how Judaism was abolished around him, but it also seems to me that seeing how learning Judaism was not safe anymore, and since the Jewish law calls for safety first - he must have made a tough decision to distance his grandchildren from it. He must have assumed that after countless generations that was the end of Judaism in his family But here we are I sometimes remind my kids that each generation is not only responsible for themselves but also serves as a bridge between its past and its future, and I am glad that today I am helping to connect the Jewish past of our family with its future, and hope it helps the next generations to carry on l Dor v Dor. Alex Dorfman As the night s twinkling stars give in, Making way for dawn, The start of a new day. Our eyes to the sky, The sun shining bright above Mount Sinai. From the beginning of time, to the end of time, And where we stand today, Beneath the earth piled high, Witness to the birth of a new realm of understanding, Our Covenant, To which we will soon claim. Thick clouds gathering, billowing gray smoke, Shards of lightning flashing, thunder booming, Almighty s voice, giving His Commandments While Moses writes. From a previous life long ago left behind, and now resting on eagle s wings, G-d gently sets me down to stand with my long lost kin, the Chosen. And, by the foot of Mount Sinai, my new life, my destiny deigns..... I am grateful. And speaking of being grateful, I want to acknowledge Rabbi Dror and Tess who worked diligently and tirelessly through our learning process in order to see our dreams become a reality. I hold in high esteem Rabbi Norman Golner who worked with me through my conversion process, and his wife, Jeanne, who became a good friend. Thank you to Don who is here with me today and for those of you whose kind words and prayers truly helped to make me feel part of the Covenant and. Thank you. August - September 2018
