1 NAZARETH COMMUNITY OF CARE CHRISTCHURCH - NEWSLETTER November 2018 As we approach the first Sunday of Advent 2nd December, some thoughts for reflection! Advent Wreath Traditionally, each of the four Advent candles have a deeper meaning which is depicted in the lovely Four Weeks of Advent Pewter Wreath: The 1st Sunday of Advent symbolizes Hope with the Prophet s Candle reminding us that Jesus is coming. The 2nd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Faith with the Bethlehem Candle reminding us of Mary and Joseph s journey to Bethlehem. The 3rd Sunday of Advent symbolizes Joy with the Shepherd s Candle reminding us of the Joy the world experienced at the coming birth of Jesus. The 4th Sunday of Advent symbolizes Peace with the Angel s Candle reminding us of the message of the angels: Peace on Earth, Good Will Toward Men. I wish to share this lovely prayer by (Cardinal Newman) Dear Lord, help me to spread thy fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Thy spirit and life. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine. Shine through me, and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Thee O Lord! Stay with me, and then I shall begin to shine as Thou shinest; so to be a light to others. The light O lord will be all from Thee; none of it will be mine; It will be Thou, shining on others through me. Let me thus praise Thee in the way Thou dost love best, by shining on those around me. Let me preach Thee without preaching, not by words but by my example, by the catching force, thy sympathetic influence of what I do, the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to Thee. What s On! Volunteers & Friends of Nazareth: Thank You afternoon Tea and Liturgy Memorial Service: Sunday 25th 2pm followed by Afternoon Tea Liffre hall In preparation for Christmas the Sisters will be on retreat: 30th Nov, 1 & 2 Dec. Sincere thanks for your ongoing support It was great having 12 people made their formal commitment as Friends of Nazareth on Sunday 28th October. 2 Who says fun should end as you grow old? Mirinda opted for a scooter ride to visit village residents Care Corner Deborah Collins Care Services Manager I continue to feel proud to be leading a team of such amazing care employees here at Nazareth House. Recent education sessions I have presented have reinforced the broad range of skills, ideas, understanding and innovations our employees possess, related to how we all care for our residents. I never cease to be delighted and inspired. Responses from employees who have attended these education sessions has been very positive with a large percentage requesting more of this kind of education. The interactive approach helps us all to work closely together with our ideas and thoughts to teach each other that total, encompassing care, transcends generations, cultures, beliefs and rules to unite us all in the one common goal; to continue to explore and be always open to seeking improvements through learning from each others experiences. With our wonderfully diverse range of cultures here at Nazareth House we have the perfect recipe for optimising our delivery of care through shared knowledge and experiences from our colleagues. Day by day we learn and improve to assist our resident to maximise their potential and enjoy the experiences they have. Wellbeing Team Patsy Bowden Wellbeing Coordinator Here we are November already where has the time gone? 1st October was Older Person s Day so we had a special morning tea and entertainment from the School of Music. After lunch, we had a fun afternoon in Dance to be Free where residents (even in wheelchairs) were all able to dance. It was so much fun and was well attended. Residents enjoyed the workshop from Bunnings who provided plants for us to plant in little pots and then we painted them. We had our speaker of the month talk about her trip to see the pope in Ireland. Residents enjoyed the weekly activities: bowls, golf, housie, music, word games, and so on which are always well attended? The Young Vinnies were in to help residents to mass and interact with them after morning tea. We had a lovely wheelchair walk around Nazareth followed by afternoon tea at the café. On the 30th of October, the residents enjoyed the fun afternoon on a Trip to London to meet the Queen with the help of an Air New Zealand pilot and flight attendants. We had our boarding passes ready to go on board and the residents were so excited. We had over 75 residents on board. Big thanks to all employees and volunteers that helped us with the trip to make it there on time at the gate. One of our resident acted as the queen and she did an amazing job; she even looked like the real queen.
