By Leni Sack, Federaion Program Direcor Over 400 people came ogeher Thank you o our enerainers: The on Sunday, April 15 a he Shalom Band from Miami, The Big Heighs Cener o celebrae Yarmulkes (a band from righ here in his milesone in Israel s hisory. Hashem was surely waching ou for us as raeli dancers led by Marsha Kisler. Lee Couny) and he Federaion s Is- he prediced rain held off unil he fes Also hanks o Saundra Falk for leading was over. Despie he srong wind, he everyone in he singing of he Naional shuk vendors were able o display Anhem and o Lawrence Dermer for heir wares, and aendees were able o leading Haikvah. enjoy he enerainmen, delicious food Thank you o Nir Cohen and Ilan and shuk shopping. Thank you o he local synagogues and organizaions and all heir voluneers who suppored his even along wih he Jewish Federaion: Temple Beh Shalom, Congregaion Ba Yam, The Communiy Free Synagogue, Shalom Life Cener, Temple Beh El, Temple Judea and BBYO. Also, hank you o Miromar Oules, one of our communiy ars & culure sponsors. Israeli music and dancing, Israeli wine asing, Israeli food and Israeli ar and jewelry for sale, along wih a variey of oher iems and aciviies, added o he fun of he afernoon. Thank you o he vendors and o everyone who aended and showed heir suppor for he Sae of Israel. The Shalom Band s music added a lo of spiri o he afernoon T-shirs celebraing Israel s 70 h birhday were for sale Face paining is always a hi wih he kids Phoos couresy Michael Shapiro A few of he BBYO eens who voluneered a he BBYO booh, which suppored Israel s Lone Soldier projec Rozzi Oserman s speech a Federaion's Annual meeing I grew up in Washingon Sae and Norhern California in a very radiional Jewish home, bu here were only hree Jewish families in our school. So we were always he ones asked o explain Hanukkah, bring in he menorah and lakes, explain Passover and mazah, he bread ha we didn have ime o wai for because we were rushing ou of Egyp. When I go o Israel a 19 (why Rozzi Israel, why 19? a Oserman sory for anoher evening), everybody already knew he Hanukkah sory, mazah was in he supermarkes, Friday nigh was Shabba...my job was done. In Israel, living on Kibbuz Gvar Am, I me John Oserman, a very cue Jewish boy from Toledo, Ohio. We milked cows ogeher never hinking ha we would find ourselves in he U.S. and in For Myers. Fas forward 20-plus years. When we visied For Myers for he firs ime, we immediaely called he Jewish Federaion o ge a sense of he Jewish communiy. I so happened ha he week we were in own was he week of Major Gifs. Helene Kramer, he Execuive Direcor, invied us o come. So, we were under he impression ha every monh or so, Federaion donors dressed up and me speakers like Ed Koch and Elie Wiesel. We moved o For Myers and we found he communiy o be warm and inviing. I joined he Federaion board and even agreed o ake a few soliciaion cards. For a few years, my only cards were he Siegels Barb and Alan and he Zuckers Sherri and Ira. I would call hem for heir gifs and hey would hank me! Again, like our firs Major Gifs The Shalom Israeli dancers always pu on a good show even, I hough ha all people would always hank me for aking he ime o ask for money. So why such a long commimen o he Federaion? And why am I somewha awkward a being honored? Because, my relaionship wih he Federaion has always been a naural fi. Because he mission of he Federaion, promoing he Jewish values of benevolence, repairing he world and aking responsibiliy for one anoher, is he same mission ha John and I share wih our children, I is a naural fi. The people involved are likeminded. Many of my deares friends are on he board. They are houghful and generous of heir ime and alens. When I aend an even, i feels like family. And when I speak wih you, I feel he love. Being chosen as a leader is a gif. I have raveled o Ukraine o visi wih elderly Holocaus survivors, winessed Aliyah made by young families from Ehiopia firshand, and me many Shuk vendors displayed a variey of iems for sale Israelis in absorpion ceners, hospials and aferschool programs for kids-arisk, as well as ariss and eachers, all while represening you. I have learned abou special needs in our communiy and been inspired by so many of our members who are leaders in he symphony, heaer, Habia for Humaniy, ar and universiies. I love collaboraing wih our alened saff. Lori and I are like kids in a candy sore when we sar creaing inviaions. Leni is he mos diplomaic and houghful lady. And Alan is he broher I never had, whom I admire and annoy a he same ime! I especially reasure he experience of sharing he imporance of leadership and Jewish values wih my children. Thank you for honoring me. When you honor me, you honor John and our belief in benevolence, repairing he world and aking responsibiliy for one anoher Commerce Cener Cour For Myers, Florida DELIVER TO CURRENT RESIDENT OR POSTMASTER: DATED RELIGIOUS NEWS ITEMS. JEWISH INTEREST A Q&A wih Perle Besserman, auhor of The Kabbalah Maser: A Novel When did you sar wriing? I published my firs sory when I was 9. Wha inspired you? I was rained as an acor, singer and dancer from an early age, so my life as a performer influenced my vision of life as a narraive filled wih muliple characers and siuaions calling for expression. Where do hose characers and sories come from? They are enaced on he sage of my imaginaion, my dreams and my memories, similarly o wha William Buler Yeas described as a sor of mediumisic rance. Wha was your childhood like? My parens were boh soryellers. Books, movies and he ars in general were he basis for he life drama enaced a home a perfec maelsrom of love and conflic beween creaiviy and Jewish orhodoxy. Why wrie abou Kabbalah? I was par of my spiriual search. I also made rips around he world and wroe books abou Orienal Mysicism and women s spiriualiy (The Way of Wiches). I sa wih Tibean and Sufi eachers and found my home, finally, in Zen. How do you feel abou wriing in he digial age? I sar ou wih a problem, so I can answer ha quesion objecively. Years ago, when firs working on a compuer, I discovered ha my elecromagneic field was aniheical o compuers and mos digial devices. Things go so crazy, when I was eaching a Illinois Sae Universiy, ha my deparmen chair had o bring in he IT saff o see why I was killing he lis serve, and why my syllabi couldn ge downloaded. Anyway, he IT people esed me (a couple of Bell Labs physiciss had sudied he problem years before) and found ha I was among 4 % of he populaion wih ha elecromagneic field problem. So, all I can say is ha my creaive urge, he characers and siuaions demanding o be wrien, are sill alive and well despie my fraugh relaionship wih he digial age. Who are among your favorie auhors? James Joyce, Flauber, Dickens, he Brones, Alice Munro, W.B. Yeas, Homer... In spie of his solipsism and sexism, I kind of like Karl Ove Knausgaard, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez, o name a few. Where do you ge your maerial? The sage of my imaginaion is filled wih characers and sories needing o be old. I une in and lisen. The American public was desperae for Schmeling o reurn o he Unied Saes for anoher figh, his ime agains he young American hero, he Brown Bomber, Joe Louis. On June 19, 1936, he figh ook place a Yankee Sadium. As Schmeling s record of lae had no been srong, he was a 10-1 underdog, and many people hough ha a 30 years of age he was pas his prime. Ye Schmeling had sudied Louis s echnique closely and found a weakness in his defense. In he 12 h round, he scored wha some consider he upse of he cenury, when he sensaionally knocked Louis ou. In Germany, he Nazi press o Schmeling s dismay boased ha he vicory represened whie Aryan supremacy. When he reurned o Berlin, he was invied by Hiler o join him for lunch. The remach, a Yankee Sadium on June 22, 1938, became a culural and poliical even. I was billed as a bale of he Aryan versus he Negro, a sruggle of evil agains good. Held before a crowd of over 70,000, he mach saw a deermined and highly-moivaed Joe Louis knock Schmeling ou wihin wo minues and four seconds of he firs round. Schmeling said laer he was relieved o have los, as he defea removed Nazi expecaions of his abiliies. I made i easier for him o refuse o ac as a Nazi, and he was shunned by Hiler and he Nazi hierarchy for having shamed he Aryan Superman ideal. Hiler never forgave Schmeling for losing o Louis. On he nigh of November 9, 1938, as ani-semiic mobs were sacking Jewish propery hroughou he Reich during he Krisallnach, Schmeling s opposiion o Nazism was esed as never before. One of his Jewish friends, David Lewin, begged in desperaion for Schmeling o sheler his wo sons, Heinz (14) and Werner (15). Wihou hesiaion, Schmeling ook hem o his room in he downown Excelsior Hoel and kep hem here for hree days, elling he desk clerk ha he was ill and mus no be disurbed. Risking his life o save he wo brohers, he hen helped hem escape Berlin. Afer hings seled down, he drove hem o his house for furher hiding. 12 12 The French pronounce i Terr-WAH By The Wine Whisperer Terroir. I s a word from he wine world, and like mos of hem, i s French. And like mos French words, i means more han jus he limied definiion of earh or land or dir. In winespeak, erroir refers o he specific place where he grapes are grown. Bu, as menioned above, i s much more han ha. In he wides sense, i means everyhing abou ha specific place: he soil, elevaion, drainage, he direcion he vineyard faces, how he fog from he ocean keeps he grapes cool in he morning, Jerry and wha ime i Greenfield burns off. And in a way, even he winemaking radiions of he paricular area. In many regions, he soil is very sie-specific. My vineyard may have a vein of limesone running beneah i, which impars cerain qualiies o he grapes grown here. My neighbor s vineyard, jus a few fee on he oher side of he car pah, doesn have any limesone. Tha s why I ge $5,000 a on for my grapes, and he has o sell Like us on Facebook! ConneC wih your Jewish Communiy JewishFederaionLCC his for only $2,000. The concep of erroir varies in imporance and significance depending on he counry and region. In he Old World (France, Spain, Ialy, Germany) i s criical. Grapes grown in a cerain region, vineyard, and even a paricular par of a vineyard are carefully and precisely classified. In fac, wine is he very firs produc in hisory o esablish and promoe geographic indicaions. We don do i wih broccoli or asparagus. In Florida, we do i wih oranges. Bu here s some indicaion ha he idea of giving winegrowing regions specific geographical indicaions is more of a markeing ploy han a designaion of qualiy. According o a recen aricle in Forbes magazine, his whole idea of a link beween locaion and qualiy is a big sicking poin in inernaional rade dispues. The quesion is, should we, as wine lovers, care abou his? Well yes. As far back as 1756, in Porugal, wealhy vineyard owners lobbied for special designaions of qualiy for heir own properies, of course. From his, regulaions were esablished abou which grapes could be grown where, and oher laws abou how he wine mus be made. Today, i s much facebook.com/jfedsrq more complex han ha. In Europe, and especially in France, here are governmen minisries, like wine police, ha decree which vineyards are in he S. Julien appellaion, for example, and why he vineyards 100 fee away across he car pah aren. And hese decrees are sricly enforced. In he U.S., he delineaion of American Viiculural Areas (AVAs) is conrolled by he Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and Explosives. This gives me he giggles every ime I hink abou i. Neverheless, knowing where your wine comes from can be imporan. Cerain grapes grow bes in cerain areas, and i makes a difference (especially in he price) wheher your Caberne Sauvignon comes from Napa or Noplace. I s he climae, he fog off he river or ocean, he kind of yeas ha grows on he grapes i s everyhing. 13 JEWISH INTEREST An unforgeable hree hours wih a veeran named Joe As remembered by Rober Peller I m Bob and I am Jewish. As such, I have always been driven o ry o undersand Hiler s incorrigible hared of he Jews and his passion o exerminae hem. In 1995 I was 47 years old and sill hadn learned he answer. We were living in Norhern New Jersey, in a small borough named Wanaque. One Sunday while reading he local Wayne Today newspaper, I spoed an aricle abou a group of WWII American war veerans who had jus reurned from a reunion in Europe o mark heir liberaion of a Nazi Concenraion Camp in souhern Germany 50 years earlier. One veeran, Joe, lived in our own. I phoned him, and he eagerly acceped my dinner inviaion. He said he would share his miliary experiences (and unknown o me a he ime, his personal horror sory). A week laer, Joe arrived a my house and he wasn an average Joe. He was a lo aller and bigger han I firs hough. Joe was no Jewish; he was Caholic. He did no have much of a hisory wih Jewish people before his miliary service or hroughou mos of he war. Afer dinner, Joe old us he sory of his WWII experiences, saring as a Miliary Policeman in France. He found his boring and kep requesing a ransfer for more acion. He regreed his because he was sen ino acion a he fron lines. Afer fighing he Nazis for several years, peace was a hand. In he spring of 1945, his Army Company was assigned he mission of liberaing a Concenraion Camp in souhern Germany. He and his fellow soldiers asked heir capain wha exacly a Concenraion Camp was. The officer wasn sure, bu hough i was a prison camp for poliical prisoners. Joe and he oher soldiers followed railroad racks which hey were old led direcly o he camp. Along he way, hey encounered small arms fire from he remaining Nazi roops defending he area around he camp. They pushed he Nazis back and coninued unscahed up he racks. Upon reaching he Camp, hey were surprised by well-manicured lawns wih shrub beds. They knew his could no be a prison faciliy and hough hey were los. The capain reviewed he map and deermined hey were indeed a he correc locaion. The soldiers proceeded hrough he barbed wire gaes ino he camp. They found he camp desered. No one prisoner or German soldier was in sigh. The only hings hey saw were many long buildings. Everyhing appeared o be diry and in disrepair. The capain divided he plaoon ino several groups of six men. Each had he ask of enering he buildings and repor wha hey had seen. They were advised o use cauion because enemy soldiers could be hiding inside. Joe was he firs one from his group o ener he building. He opened he door and saw a sigh which he old me ha he sill sees when he shus his eyes a nigh (50 years laer). He hadn slep a peaceful nigh in 50 years, ever since he and his Army buddies had liberaed ha Concenraion Camp in They saw he skin and bones of men, some dead, some barely alive, laying on long racks. I was dead quie inside as he prisoners did no undersand who hese soldiers were. They had never seen an American soldier before and were no able o undersand heir language. Each side was frozen in fear. The soldiers blood drained from heir exposed skin. They became pale as whie snow. Mos grew fain. Joe and he five oher baled-hardened soldiers ran from he building and rejoined he capain and oher men, sobbing unconrollably and hyserically as hey ran. Afer Joe aemped o ell he capain wha was inside he building, he capain ordered his men o regroup. The capain wen inside he building, saw wha his men had seen and ried unsuccessfully o communicae wih he prisoners, who were sill cowering in fear. He lef he barracks and ried o resore order wih his men who were visibly in shock, many shaking and crying. When some semblance of calm was resored, Joe and he oher groups reenered he buildings and aemped o assure he prisoners hey mean hem no harm, and were here o se hem free. The capain deermined ha he prisoners were primarily Jewish because of heir language. Coincidenally, wo of he soldiers spoke some Yiddish and could communicae wih hese poor souls. They were old he sory of heir incarceraion; heir being sarved and worked o deah; he losses of heir enire families; he consan fear and dread; he hopelessness; he rampan diseases and afflicions; heir brual reamen by he guards; and he daily execuions. They hadn seen heir Nazi guards in days, bu were afraid o leave heir barracks because hey didn know where o go. Each survivor had bones prorude from heir skin. Their eyes bulged from heir sockes. Their clohes worn and ragged. Sores on heir faces and bodies. Caved-in faces. Joe said hese were he living dead, sripped of heir humaniy. Joe and ohers ried o offer hese malnourished creaures, some barely alive, food, bu he army medic advised no o feed hem, less hey perish from eaing somehing heir frail bodies could no process. While oher soldiers ouside 13 searched he camp area for escaping German guards, Joe and he oher men slowly evacuaed he buildings wih he survivors. The capain had o deal wih anoher problem which required immediae resoluion. The soldiers who winessed hese horrific sighs were hell-ben on wreaking unbridled, medieval revenge on any of he German guards hey capured. The capain admonished his men, saing ha killing a capive German soldier would be reaed as murder. The offending U.S. soldier would face a cour marial. Joe said several of he soldiers did no obey he capain s orders and ook maers ino heir own hands. The soldiers were no prepared o rea and suppor he massive number of survivors. The capain radioed for addiional roops, medical personnel and supplies, which arrived in shor order. The survivors were reaed for heir problems, mosly malnuriion, as bes as possible, and hen ranspored o a medivac holding area. Joe bonded wih one of he survivors and hey became lifelong friends. This survivor evenually immigraed o he U.S. and became a prominen indusrialis in Cleveland. Joe and his survivor kep in ouch regularly hrough he years. I was his survivor who paid for Joe and his wife s rip o Europe for he 50 h reunion of he Concenraion Camp s liberaion. Joe said i ook years afer his army discharge o achieve some sense of normalcy afer being an eyewiness o he unforgeable horrors he encounered. My sory ends here, bu he memories of ha nigh wih a veeran named Joe will never be forgoen. We all should never forge he sory he old and remain vigilan ha i will never happen again. We read i in he Book of Leviicus, Chaper 19:18: You shall no ake vengeance or bear a grudge agains your kinsfolk. Love your neighbor as yourself: I am he Lord. The verse seems o be prey clear. Wheher we ge disappoined, or angered, by our neighbors or by our relaives, we are no allowed o ge back a hem, physically or emoionally. From a logical poin of view, his hardly makes sense. If my neighbor cus down a ree on my side of he propery line or never reimburses me for he sugar and eggs she is always borrowing, why do I have o be he more maure one? There is obviously a reason why we need his mizvah, his commandmen. We can all wan o behave, from ime o ime, like he Hafields and he McCoys. Bu Judaism calls us o a higher belief and pracice. When we lef Egyp behind, here was a religious revoluion. We gave up he power poliics of Egyp and we also gave up he idea of being oally separae from our neighbors. We are all in his ogeher. Par of he idea of he covenan is ha has chaired he Prayer Breakfas for wo years and has changed he one of he program from being predominanly Chrisian o being ruly ecumenical. The goal of his year s Breakfas was o bring ogeher all people of faih for a ime of prayer and affirmaion. To realiae agains a member of he Tribe, so o speak, would be o figh back agains Hashem. As we come o he las words of he verse, as yourself, we have anoher lesson o learn. The ex says ha my neighbor is like me. Is ha possible? She cu down my ree, he didn repay my eggs, sugar and whaever else he borrowed. How can my neighbor be like me? My neighbor, wheher I like i or no, has he same spark of he Divine, as I do. Someimes I behave from my lower self and someimes from my higher self. And ha is exacly wha my neighbor does as well. The lesson is no abou who can be he more maure person, bu abou how much our ego predominaes. When Yom Kippur rolls around, I will pray for my neighbor s sins o be forgiven, along wih mine. So how can I add o ha lis of sins for boh of us? The sages had a wonderful saying: Kol Yisrael aravim zeh b zeh. Each Israelie is responsible for every oher Israelie. We belonged o a Conservaive shul, ofen davened a Young Israel, and we were sen o Ramah and Massad Jewish summer camps. So while by mos sandards we were fairly immersed in Jewish living, he level of our Jewish observance was nowhere near wha we were being augh in yeshivah. No only our modern families, bu ancien ones depiced in our Torah cerainly had heir share of dysfuncional challenges. There was pleny of sibling rivalry beween Joseph and his brohers, couples conneced and broke up, here was love, loyaly and happiness as well as decei and jealousy. Through hese familial bonds and challenges he Jewish people were born. Our Torah ress on he srong foundaion of family, our abiliy o see ha we re all conneced, par of one big Eiz Chayim, he ree of life. Family, for beer or worse is he core of who we are as a Jewish people. The power of love and ogeherness bego he firs families of Judaism and birhed he welve ribes of Israel. The Jewish people as a whole are described as B nei Yisrael -The Children of Israel, no descendans of he land, bu of our pariarch Jacob, he grandson of Abraham. All he children of Israel, all of us, are par of one conneced exended family. Our family relaionships each us how o beer undersand each oher and ourselves. Family is where we firs experience loss and sadness while learning abou joy and happiness. In Hebrew we say mishpacha, which means a Jewish family or social uni ha includes boh close and disan relaives. Simply pu, we re all mishpacha, we re all family and family is he foundaion upon which Shalom Life Cener was buil. Like a family, a radiional spiriual communiy or kehilla is one where everyone is made o feel welcome. I s an environmen where our leadership coninuously sresses he values of love, compassion, inclusion and accepance, consanly encouraging a culure of posiiviy where we lif each oher up and rely on one anoher hrough good imes and difficul ones. The fuure of our Jewish exended family depends on uniy, sabiliy and srong leadership. The Talmud ells us all Jews are responsible for each oher. Hillel said, If I am no for myself who will be for me? If I am only for myself wha am I? As a family, we re all one link in a chain ha sreches back a hundred generaions. We re a bridge beween he pas and he fuure over which he survival of our people will pass. Family is wha will anchor us on eiher shore. The acions we ake oday will allow our children o decide wheher hey care enough o build heir own bridge. From Breishi in he beginning, o presen day, a family, wih all is ups and downs, is forever. Families don need wrien commimens or erm conracs; hey re conneced o each oher for he long haul. They are bound by somehing much deeper, an ofen unexplainable relaionship, unfahomable feeling love. In a world of chaos and disracion, calm and concenraion, our beauiful and deeply rooed ancien radiions and family values offer an oasis of peaceful and swee spiriualiy for us o share wih our Jewish communiy, our exended family.
