1 TOWER CHIMES Volume 9 Issue 11 November 2018 FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Special points of interest: Church Community New - pg. 3 Prayer Requests - pg. 6 Church Calendar Inside this issue: Poinsettia Memorials Pg. 2 What Can I Do? Pg. 4 Thanksgiving Blessings Reminder: Pg. 5 A Leadership Retreat with Vandersall Collective is being held at Johnsonburg on the following date: Saturday, Nov. 17 Editor: CAB office@1stpresrahway.org From Pastor Erin... Postcard Snapshots R emember when you received a postcard in the mail because someone you knew was on an amazing trip? Imagine the excitement of receiving a painting or photo of a place you haven t gone yet. Postcards weren t meant to tell the whole story. You heard the whole story once the journey was complete. In our world today it is rare that we receive these treasures in the mail as much. We get snapshots of people s vacations and trips on social media and in phone calls. The elders, who currently serve on session, started out on the this journey with Vandersall Collective last winter/spring when we considered what road blocks and joys continued to pop up in our ministry at First Presbyterian Church. After prayer and consideration, we decided to enter in a relationship with Vandersall Collective, Mieke Vandersall and Larissa Kwong-Abazia specifically. Our topic for in depth prayer and study is our relationship with money and discipleship. We are in the middle of our journey right now, so we can t give you a full synopsis of all that we ve learned. But we want to give you a snapshot of where we are, in hopes that you might pray with us and keep your hearts open for how God will move in us. The following are what they d like to share about what they learned so far: Don t be afraid to be uncomfortable. Together we can refocus, the best is yet to come. We must focus and invest in our future. Trust in God s guidance. We will meet for another day-long retreat at Johnsonburg Presbyterian Camp on Saturday, November 17. After which, we will take a break for the advent season and resume our work in the new year. God is working and I can t wait to see how God will renew, heal, and strengthen us in our congregation!

4 Page 4 TOWER CHIMES As Pastor Erin mentioned in her October article, last month was a what can I do theme. Inserts listing some ideas were available to those who came to service. If you were unable to make it to worship, we d like to share with you some of the suggestions that you can do on two important topics: Hunger & Food Insecurity & Caring for God s Creation Hunger & Food Insecurity Care of God s Creation Take time to say blessings over your food in thanks to God and those who helped grow and raise it. Donate food to Food for Friends pantry right after the holidays when supplies are low. Make a hot meal for people who live alone or are food insecure. Conserve energy by turning off the lights when you leave the room. Lower your thermostat two degrees in your home. Make sure to carry your trash and recyclables to the proper place. Recycle every chance you get. Find out where there are food deserts and advocate the local government to include a grocery store. Start a community garden. Carry canvas bags to grocery stores; don t use plastic bags. Instead of driving to your destination consider walking, if possible. Pay attention to what s in your refrigerator-find ways to eliminate your food waste for a week. Check out the following link to find out how you can keep plastic out of the oceans: When you can... buy fair trade coffee or chocolate that gives farmers a fair wage for their work. -free-seas/plastics-in-the-ocean Give up one meal a week, or give up junk food for one week, and donate the money to a cause. Research what hunger looks like in our community and around the world. So, what can you do? These ideas are a good start in making a difference.
