The icon of the Annunciation is one that presents the joy of the announcement of the coming of Christ. In this icon, we can see the Archangel Gabriel and the Holy Mother in that unique encounter!

The Archangel Gabriel is "sent forth" to the Holy Mother. He has one arm outstretched, for he is greeting her and announcing the Good News to Her.

1 The icon of the Annunciation is one that presents the joy of the announcement of the coming of Christ. In this icon, we can see the Archangel Gabriel and the Holy Mother in that unique encounter! It is an icon of bright colors, depicting the Archangel Gabriel (left), who has descended from heaven, and the Virgin Mary (right), who has been chosen to be the Mother of God. The Archangel Gabriel is "sent forth" to the Holy Mother. He has one arm outstretched, for he is greeting her and announcing the Good News to Her. Mary's right hand is raised in acceptance of Gabriel's message. We can see a minimal, very slight bowing of the head, which, together with the hand gesture, is a statement of acceptance. The color of the Holy Mother's garment, her external robe is dark red, which is the color of the temple s veil in Jerusalem. Mary became the new temple in which God s glory is dwelling. In the middle, we see the Holy Spirit coming upon her from heaven; for God, by the Holy Spirit, was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. Page 1 of 8

And coming to her, he said, Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you. But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end. But Mary said to the angel, How can this be, since I have no relations with a man? And the angel said to her in reply, The holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing is impossible with God. Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. Page 2 of 8

3 May it be done to me according to your Word When Mary gave her full consent to the angel of the Lord, she embraced God s divine will. She placed all of her trust in the Lord, willingly and without any reservation. Sometimes we miss what Mary risked in accepting God s will. In this remarkable passage from Luke, Mary accepted laying down her life for the Lord. She wants what the Lord wants and willingly accepted His will. Mary surrenders control; she welcomes the mysterious workings of God. She embraces God s plan for the world, even though she doesn t know how it will turn out. It s a risk. And she says yes to God. And as for us, we have our hopes, our dreams, and our plans, and we often put our trust in those and our own designs more than the Lord s. When we have conflict between those designs and those of the Lord s, do we accept the change willingly? The trouble for us is that we have a hard time believing that the disarray of our lives can become the place where God s new life happens. It seems impossible. That is why we must listen, with Mary, to Gabriel s last words just before he abandons her. He says, For nothing is impossible with God And Mary said: Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word. 4 REMEMBER IT For nothing is impossible with God. Luke 1: 37 Deacon's Corner Many might say that new technology helps us to live longer, live better, communicate better, and be better at our jobs. Unfortunately, we tend to evaluate ourselves based on comparison to the rest of society. But what is that the best way to determine who we are, what we are, what we are accomplishing with our lives? This morning, I would like to offer an alternative. One that I feel will have and does have an everlasting effect on each of us individually. That alternative is our ONE-ON -ONE relationship with God, Our Father. Living has become so much more complicated over the past 2,000 years when Jesus physically walked among us. He did not make it more complicated, we do. He has not changed, we have. His Words are the same then as they are now. But are we willing to accept all things as coming from God? Many times we want things the way we want them. Accepting something different is sometimes hard. But yet, like Mary, we are all called to end every prayer, and every conversation with God with the line, "according to Your will". Rest In Peace Sunday, November 22, a forty Day Memorial Mass will be offered for the rest of the soul of Antoun Dakhoul, father of Albert and Edgar Dakhoul. Page 4 of 8

5 Prep time: min Serves :4-6 people OLL Kitchen's Corner Recipe of the week: Ouzeh Rice Ingredients 1 ½ cups of Rice (I am partial to Uncle Bens) 3 2/3 cups of beef stock (or chicken. Follow the instructions on you Rice box for how much water the rice needs to cook) 1 lb ground beef (or less if you don't like a lot of meat in your rice) 1 small onion, chopped ½ cup of pine nuts (optional) ½ cup of slivered almonds (optional) 1 cup of frozen peas (optional) 1 ½ teaspoons seven spices 2 tbsp butter or vegetable oil Pinch of Salt Preparation First, if you're making with pine nuts and almonds, roast them in a pan with some of the butter. When they've turned brown, remove them with a slotted spoon and set aside. In the same pan (I do everything in one pot), add the remaining butter and cook the chopped onion until wilted. Add the meat, brown it. Add the rice, mix with the beef then add the stock. Add the spices, stir and bring it to a boil. Add salt, but not too much, especially if your stock is not reduced sodium. When it boils, lower the heat and cover. Defrost the peas separately. When the rice is cooked, add the peas, pine nuts and almonds. Mix. Let it rest for 10 minutes and then enjoy! If you don't have seven spices, try making it with allspice (NOT THE SAME), or make the mix yourself. Seven spices consist of cloves, cumin, nutmeg, coriander, cinnamon, and paprika.
