November/December Edition 3 Assalamu Alaikum Students, Parents and Community Members, This month has been another busy one for everyone at the American Youth Academy, as we prepare for the end of Semester 1. Our Elementary and 6th Grade students are once again preparing for our yearly STEM Fair, our middle school and high school students are getting ready for Semester exams, and our teachers, office staff, and parent volunteers are diligently preparing for our upcoming FCIS visit in January. As 2013 comes to a close, there are a few items that I would like to remind everyone about: Please take advantage of our monthly Meet the Administrators meetings. These meetings are great opportunities for you to ask questions about our upcoming events and programs, and discuss any concerns you may have with our Administrative team. Get involved! Our IPTA meetings, Tarbiyah Programs, fundraising events, and student assemblies are not only great ways for you to support AYA, but they are wonderful ways to meet and socialize with other AYA families. Always make sure you keep a watchful eye on your children during these events. Help your children (in middle and high school) prepare for their Semester exams early (exams will be held from Dec Dec. 19). If students study each night and during the weekends, they can avoid cramming right before exam day. Also, make sure your children have a good night s sleep and a hearty breakfast before each exam day. May Allah bless all AYA families and our community members. I am a Registered Nurse (RN) at St. Joseph's Women's Hospital where I work in their Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. What do you miss most about AYA? I miss the unity and closeness I used to feel in a Muslim environment and the simplicity of being a young student. When did you graduate from AYA? I graduated in the year of What was your best memory at AYA? I have many great memories, but in general I would say the close relationships I had with my friends and the TLC I received from the teachers. What advice do you have for students who are currently attending AYA? Please, please, please, enjoy these years. As much as it excites you to become an adult and move on, you will always look back and wish you were a kid again. Life is short, so enjoy it to the fullest and always keep Allah (SWT) close to your heart. One day, you will move on to College and it will be your primary responsibility to remember Allah. Really special and sometimes nervous. How did wearing hijab change your life? It made me feel really special, and when I wasn't wearing a hijab, I felt really plain. Heba Hamed How do you feel when you are wearing your hijab in public? I feel unique. How did wearing hijab change your life? I feel like a true Muslim. Sumeyye Erdem How do you feel when you are wearing your hijab in public? I feel different, but I know that I'm obeying Allah, so it s all worth it. How did wearing hijab change your life? It helped me be more aware of Allah and more aware of my religion. Layal Barakat How do you feel when you are wearing your hijab in public? I feel happy that I'm showing my hijab in public. How did wearing hijab change your life? It made me see Islam in a different way, and it encouraged me to read more Qur an. Jasmine Abdel How do you feel when you are wearing your hijab in public? I feel happy. How did wearing hijab change your life? It makes me feel special, and I know that Allah s protecting me. 5 News from the Nest Page 5 Fieldtrips On November 13th, the 2nd grade students went to Glazer Children's Museum. We have been studying energy in Science so we participated in the "Power" assembly and reviewed some concepts, but also learned many new things. During the assembly, we were able to see static electricity and the transfer of energy into someone's hair!-sr. Regina,2A Lead Teacher When I went to MOSI with my class, we went to the science lab. We made oobleck that is not a liquid or a solid. We also went to moon base where I learned about matter, gas and gravity. We then saw an IMAX movie about sharks who have a lot of energy. They swim at a fast speed and used a lot of force when they were trying to bite the wooden seal. We all had lots of fun. -Elyes Belkherroubi, 1B Sr. Remah and Br. Mamdouh did a great job planning such an educational fieldtrip with the Islamic Studies Department! By: Sarah Judeh, 7A and Mena Daashoush, 8A Fieldtrip Interview with Br. Mamdouh How was the graveyard trip? It was fun at first, but as we started to learn about the bodies, we were sad. Then, in the graveyard we became very teary and sad. Was the graveyard emotional for you? Not as much anymore, since I go there and help after the bodies have been washed, but it was for the students. Did the graveyard remind you about anyone? Yes, my father. He died in 1984, and I still remember it clearly. What made you want to teach this? To give the youth knowledge about things they may have never thought about.

6 Page 6 News from the Nest Recipes Mujadara: A delicious, inexpensive, healthy, simple to make, meal. Art Class By: Adham Sulliaman, 8B Ingredients: 1 cup lentils 1 1/4 cup brown basmati rice 4 cups vegetable broth or water salt (to taste) 1/2 tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. cumin 1/4 cup olive oil 3 large onions, sliced in 1/2 inch slivers Directions: 1. Sauté onions with olive oil, stirring occasionally, until caramelize. Reserve 4 tabs (or more) for garnish. 2. While onions are caramelizing, throw lentils in a pot with 4 cups of broth or water. Bring to a boil, reduce to medium heat, cover, and cook for about 20 minutes, or until lentils are tender and most liquid is absorbed. 3. Once lentils are situated (i.e. cooking), cook rice. We use a rice cooker for this part. 4. Once lentils are finished cooking, add in cooked rice, caramelized onions, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mix well. 5. Garnish with remaining onions. Serve and enjoy.
