12 Annual Report GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY We are glad to present the Annual report for , which provides a detailed account of the academic and administrative activities of the University. Because of the publicity of the University and strong outreach programme, there has been a steady growth in the enrolment of the students in the University. A total of 59 students for M.A. in Archaeology, 17 students for M.A. in Linguistics and 11 students for M.A. in Sanskrit and Lexicography, 05 students for P.G. Diploma in Archaeology, 85 students for Ph.D. in Archaeology, 19 students for Ph.D. in Linguistics and 16 students for Ph.D. in Sanskrit and Lexicography enrolled during the academic year. It is a matter of great satisfaction that the University received students from a number of foreign countries including S. Korea, Japan, Iran, Sri-Lanka, Thailand, etc. As usual, the University celebrated its Revival Day on 17 th August Hon ble Chancellor of the University delivered a special lecture on this occasion. The celebrations commenced on 16 th August 2012with a special exhibition of books, photographs and articles. On 17 th August, a meeting of the Past-Students Association was held between am and was followed by the main programme, in which a special lecture was delivered. In the post-lunch session, a cultural programme was held by the students and staff of the University, in which various performances depicting the cultural diversity of the country and abroad were highlighted. The students and staff of the University participated in the variety-entertainment programme enthusiastically and wholeheartedly. The University also celebrated its 8 th Convocation on 6 th October 2012, on the eve of the Foundation Day of the College. The function was presided over by the Hon ble chancellor, Dr. G.B. Deglurkar. Dr. Narendra Jadhav, Hon ble Member, Planning Commission, Government of India was a special guest on this occasion. He delivered the Convocation address on the status of higher learning in the country. The University conferred an honorary degree on Prof. A. Sundara, eminent Archaeologist, Prof. Pramod Lalye, eminent Sanskrit scholar and Prof. M.A. Mehendale, eminent Linguist on this occasion. On this occasion 9 Ph.D s were awarded in Archaeology and 3 Ph.D. s were awarded in Linguistics. Similarly, 37 M.A. students were awarded degrees in Archaeology, 15 in Linguistics and 3 in Sanskrit and Lexicography. Besides these, 6 students were also awarded the P.G. Diploma. The scanning and digitization programme of the Department of Sanskrit and Lexicography for digitization of reference slips was completed during this year. Over 10 million reference slips were scanned and digitized in this programme, which has become an important source of the preparation of the Dictionary.

13 12 Annual Report The Department of Archaeology organized, in collaboration with the Archaeological Survey of India, A Workshop on the Archaeology of Western India on 5-6 th November The Department also organized the One Day Workshop for School Teachers and a Seminar on Water management and Conservation. The University has completed theutilization of grant received under XI th Five-year plan for various developmental activities. The amount of Rs. Five crores granted by the Government of India through UGC was utilized mainly for digitization work as well as improvement of infrastructural facilities on the campus. The Department of Archaeology completed the utilization of the grant received under Centre of Advanced Study (CAS) in Archaeology for furthering research and teaching activities as well as creating new infrastructural facilities and upgrading those already present. The University was able to fill 44 non-teaching posts as well as five teaching positions during the year. Thus, the overall academic and administrative progress of the University was quite satisfactory during the academic year

42 Annual Report VII. RESEARCH PREHISTORY AND PALAEOENVIRONMENT S. Mishra Exploration and Excavation 1. Exploration in Narmada Valley around Narsingpur, District Narsingpur, Madhya Pradesh A visit was made to Narsingpur to visit the sites to in relation to the ongoing PhD research of Burhan Ahmed, Non Biface industries of the Narmada Valley. One of the most interesting and best studied sites is Samnapur which was excavated by Deccan College under Dr. V.N. Misra earlier. We re-visited the site and also other locatities around Narsinghpur such as Mahdeo Piparia, Barman Ghat and Bhedaghat. 2. Participation in Excavation at Tikoda, District Raisen, Madhya Pradesh, During the participation in the Tikoda excavation an attempt was made to locate the horizon of the microliths which are occurring on the eroded gully surface in locality 4. The micolith horizon was established to be grayish clay which overlies the bright yellow Acheulian horizon and underlies the colluvial sand wash accumulating presently. Dating of this horizon will be very interesting as the microblade assemblage appears quite archaic. S.G. Deo 1. Excavation at Tikoda, District Raisen, Madhya Pradesh (in collaboration with Shri S.B. Ota, Regional Director, Central Zone, Archaeological Survey of India, Bhopal) Since the area of investigation is confined to the reserve forest of Tikoda village, it forms a single geographic unit. Within this unit we noticed that there are number scatters with differential occurrence in density of Acheulian artefacts. Therefore, various distinct concentrations of lithic scatter within the area are designated as 'locality'. So far eight localities have been located in the area confined to southern slope and 'V' shaped valley of Tikoda hill. These localities have been named as TKD-I to TKD-VIII.

43 42 Annual Report Fig. 1: Location Map of Localities Vill Tikoda This year we carried out excavations at following localities at Tikoda: Locality TKD -II: Continued further excavation at this locality in 5 5m trench. The trench was dug up to the bedrock in 2 5 m area. We systematically collected exposed artefacts from digging. Further soil samples were collected for textural as well chemical analysis and for dating purpose. Locality TKD -IV: A huge yellowish sedimentary deposit comprised of sand and silt size is observed at the foot of the Narwar hill in the 'V' shaped valley. This deposit is more than 10 m thick. There are two huge such deposits which are in the form of island and presented cut by the seasonal low order stream that originate in the Narwar hills. The top surface is almost flat with thin deposit of ferricrete gravel and Acheulian artefacts are associated with it. A small scale Fig. 2 : Continuation of TKD II Trench (5 5 m)

44 Annual Report excavation at the top has yielded number of artefacts sealed under thin yellow sediment. At this locality this year a step trench was dug through the 10 m thick deposit. This has shown that there are two levels of Acheulian occupation - one is on the top surface and the other is at xx m from top almost on the bedrock sandstone. These two artefact levels are separated by about 7 m thick deposit completely devoid of any artefacts. Locality TKD -VII: At this locality large number of artefacts is exposed on the surface due to recent erosion of the covering sediments. This locality is also in dark yellow sediment. Here a 3 x 3 m trench was dug into 5.5 m thick deposit. This trench also yielded artefacts at a particular level associated with ferrugenised gravel deposit. Small size artefacts/debitage made on chalcedony and chert is observed at this locality. Locality Pilidhani: This locality is situated away from the 'V' shaped valley toward south east. This locality is in basalt bedrock with thick dark brown clay deposit. Number of artefacts are strewn on the surface of this clay. At Pilidhani locality sediment is dark yellow sandy-silt with hard calcrete-like nodules spread on the surface. There are many artefacts on surface exposed by erosion of this yellow sediment. This year we systematically collected surface artefacts by laying a grid of m grid and documented details of each artefact such as orientation, inclination, latitude and longitude, context of the artefacts, length, breadth and thickness of the artefacts. Besides systematic collection of artefacts we dug three trial trenches to understand the geomorphic context of Acheulian artefacts. All the artefacts are made on quartzite. The locality is in bedrock basalt. Artefacts are associated with ferruginsied gravel. This locality is situated on nala originating in the Narwar hill draining through the Vindhyan sandstone and basalt. Detailed geomorphic observations around this locality were carried out to understand the formation processes. P.D. Sable 1. Exploration in Middle Reaches Bhima River Basin: Environmental archaeological studies of important those archaeological sites which are present on the bank of Bhima river Middle reach of Bhima basin work is a part of ICSSR Major Research Project. The surface and subsurface exploration of Bhima river basin in middle reaches was carried. The study area falls between Latitude 17 15' N to 18 45' N and Longitude 74 25' E to 76 00'E, on the toposheet map of Survey of India (Scale 1:250,000). It covers the parts of Solapur, Ahmednagar, Beed and Osmanabad districts of Maharashtra. The river flows through the highly draught prone area, therefore, it is seasonal. To study the drainage, landforms, topography, habitat, vegetation and

45 44 Annual Report accessibility of the study area by using Survey of India (SOI) topographic maps of 1: 50,000 scale and quarter inch map of 1:4 miles scale. As a part of UGC, New Delhi, major research project, I have carried out a detailed environmental archaeological (Geoarchaeological) investigation in middle reaches of Bhima river. The main aim of the investigation is to explore and study the effect of Ancient flood on archaeological monuments in this area. The present study area cover southern part of Pune, and major part of Solapur from Maharashtra. For the sake of study the middle reaches of Bhima basin is divided into micro segment viz (i) Ujani Dam Back water area (ii) middle-upper reaches (iii) middle - middle reaches (iv)middle house reaches. In each micro segment a details exploration carried out and no. of archaeological monument such as temples, forts, house and habitation site find out. Since the area under study was quite vast and unexplored, therefore a detailed Geoarchaeological exploration has been carried out to reconstruct the paleoenvironmental conditions, geomorphology, geology and the landscape of the Sina river basin. During the exploration no. of temples which are buried under the thick pile of river flash deposit were encountered. The details of each site like archaeological material, type of deposit etc. has recorded properly. 1. Participated in Megalithic excavation at Malli, dist. Excavations Directed: Sampling and Excavations at Rakhigarhi, Hisar District, Haryana,. 2. Climate and Culture - An Interdisciplinary Approach to the Harappan Archaeology in the Ghaggar basin : This ongoing research project is aimed at reconstruction of the Holocene period climatic sequence and study its impact on the cultural processes in the Northwest part of the country. The other aspects that are being studied under this project include origins and developmental processes from Pre/Early to Mature Harappan, the role of the local cultures in the development of Harappan traditions, regional variation of the Harappan culture in this region and socio-economic organizations of the Harappan culture. Also it is possible to study who were the Harappan people, composition of their population, their health, diet and subsistence as the human burial site has produced large number of skeletal data at Farmana.

Deotare Explorations in southern part of Purna basin especially in the Mun and the Katepurna sub-basin in Vidarbha Last several years Deotare is working in Purna valley of Tapi basin with a view to reconstruct the environment during early Historic period in this area. In this connection northern and southern part of the Purna basin was extensively explored with a view to understand considerably the status of early Historic culture in the region. It was initiated basically in Akola and Buldana districts and discovered number of medieval and Early Historic sites in this region. While exploring the area it is very promptly noted that almost every village is having ancient remains in one way or other in the form of pottery, some ancient objects, traces of ancient temple, Garhi with ancient pottery pieces, coins, figurine etc. The report on the excavation of Early Historic Bhon is ready for publication and another site of Kholapur which is from the same region of the Purna, is in progress and very soon it will be published. Both these sites are very well studied by the Deccan College team considering their importance and specific function, they are major urban centers located on the ancient highway known as Dakshinapath. Because of their unique location, these sites were engaged in trade in all directions by exporting meticulously crafted terracotta objects, carnelian beads, shell objects etc. There may be many more such sites in the region which are on way of destruction or waiting for proper attention by the archaeologists. During these years it is felt that systematic survey of all the villages is necessary to avoid further destruction and needed proper documentation and finally all these material remains should be available for study to the interested scholars. So that ancient history will have authenticated additional data for the reconstruction of true

48 Annual Report picture of our ancestor's lifestyle, society they lived, trading contact, community and their regional relationship. The urbanization during early Historic period in the Purna basin has been very well established now and need to be correlate with neighboring areas so as to have appropriate impact on the regional basis. This is the future course of action in this direction by employing multidisciplinary approach to the topic in question. R.K. Mohanty Brief Report on Archaeological Activities at Talapada, Odisha 2013 Prof. R.K.Mohanty, Prof.Monica L.Smith and Prof. P.P. Joglekar Introduction Talapada is an archaeological site of the Early Historic period located 42 kilometers south of the Odisha state capital Bhubaneswar and 20 kilometers south-southeast of the district headquarter of Khurda. The site measures 25 hectares in size, surrounded by a square rampart measuring up to three meters in height. There were four gateways located in the center of each side. The site was first discovered in 2011 in conjunction with an exploration of the nearby Neolithic settlement of GolbaiSasan carried out by Deccan College, under the direction of Prof. R. K. Mohanty. It was excavated by Profs. R. K. Mohanty and P. P. Joglekar in collaboration with Monica. L. Smith of the UCLA,USA. The team was assisted by research scholars and students from Deccan College, UtkalUniversity, Bhubaneswar, Ravenshaw University, Cuttack, and Visva- Bharati University, Santiniketan. The teamespecially supervised consisted of Dr. TilokThakuria of the NEHU, Ms. Sikhasree Ray, Ms. ArunimaPati, Mr. N. Nihildas of Deccan College and research scholars of the UCLA. Fieldwork consisted of excavations and geophysical survey carried out at Talapada from January 4, 2013 to February 8, Excavations The geophysical survey was carried out through magnetic gradiometry utilizing a Geoscan Research FM-256 Fluxgate Gradiometer. Excavations were undertaken in four localities to evaluate the presence of architecture, to establish the chronology and cultural life at the site (Fig.1). Operation 1, 2, 3 gave a large amount of cultural remains especially pottery, animal bone and a few objects of daily use. However, the excavations at operation 4, located in the central northeastern interior area of the rampart and consisting of trenches measuring a total of 8 12 meters to a maximum depth of 2.58 meters below modern ground surface where natural soil was reached (Fig. 2). It revealed the presence of architecture

The construction of this structure within the housing complex might have served a different purpose. The potteries from the upper portion of the excavations were of the Early Historic period but were very wornout and abraded, suggesting redeposit or moved out from neighbouring areas. The lower portion of the excavation revealed pottery corresponding to the lower strata of Sisupalgarh, such as knobbed ware and highly-burnished pottery with graffiti marks.

50 Annual Report Artifacts and Antiquities The majority artifact type at Talapada consisted of ceramics. Talapada has the same range of antiquities as seen at the contemporaneous Early Historic site of Sisupalgarh, including terracotta earspools, beads, pendants and scrubbers. The occurrence and quantity of these items are significantly less as was found at Sisupalgarh. Daily-use goods in Operation 2 included one broken gray Fig.5 : Cultural material from Talapada sandstone pestle measuring cm and two steatite bowl fragments (one each from Operation 2 and Operation 4). Two square lead objects, probably coins, were found from Operation 4 but they were very deteriorated and unreadable. Artifacts distinct to Talapada include one ear-spool in lead recovered in Operation 4. Conclusions The occupational sequence at Talapada is identical to that of Sisupalgarh and presents the same chronology of ceramics that includes high-fired, burnished wares such as knobbed wares at the lower occupation sequence, followed by oxidized (red) low-fired and unburnished wares in the upper occupation sequence. However, the architectural components at Talapada appear to be relatively modest. Some areas had both architecture and ceramics (such as Operation 4) while other areas had ceramics but no architecture (Operations 1, 2 and 3). Even in Operation 4, however, architecture was not consistently evident in each of the occupational phases as the fill in this area consisted of a large quantity of re-deposited and much worn-out ceramic material. The presence of many identical factors at both Sisupalgarh and Talapada (such as the outline of the ramparts, the pottery and other artifact types, and structural configurations such as laterite stone rings) strongly suggests the existence of some formal relationship between the two sites that is worthy of further investigation. Brief report on the investigations at Banga-Harirajpur for the season Banga-Harirajpur, is a Neolithic-Chalcolithic site located in the Puri district of Odisha. It is adjacent to the villages of the same name. The mound is locally known as BantalMundia. The site is located in rich alluvium zone and is very close to the right bank of the river Daya. It was first located by Dr. Anaam Behera of the Dept. of A.I.H.C. and Archaeology, Utkal University and Dr. Abhijit Dandekar of Deccan College

51 50 Annual Report Fig. 1 : The mound at the site of Harirajpur-Banga during year The site was subsequently excavated in this year's field season under the Direction of Prof. K.K. Basa of the Dept. of Anthropology, Utkal University, Prof. R.K. Mohanty of Deccan College under the sponsorship of the Centre for Heritage Studies, Bhubaneshwar. The excavation was assisted by Mr. Shantanu A. Vaidya of the Deccan College and Dr. Daitari Sahoo of the Utkal University. The site is an imposing mound of about 7m in height and covers an area of around 16 acres. The site is disturbed at some places due to agriculture activity and soil quarrying. During this season five trenches were laid on the south-western slope of the mound. The excavation was planned in step trench technique. The steps were named A, A1, B, B1, C, C1, D, D1, E, and E1. Out of these A, B, C, D, E were 2 m 2m, whereas the trenches A1, B1, C1, D1, and E1 were 2 m 3 m. The excavation was confined to all step trenches except C1. The excavation revealed all along the floor levels of the Neolithic-Chalcolithic period. The trenches A-A1, B-B1, C-C1, D-D1 and E-E1 were combined. The excavation in D-D1 revealed that it was a dump of the later period. This dump might have occurred due to the flow over the slope of the mound. The floors of the period were made of the laterite gravel (murrum) and over it was laid a thick layer of rammed silt-soil mixed with fine sand. This was the smeared and smoothened probably with cowdung for making living floors. The structures, as can be envisaged from partial exposure of some structures, were circular in nature. In trench A-A1 a part of a floor was found exposed in the limited area which was semi-circular in shape. The habitation layers surrounding the structures were loose and filled with white ashy material and had a huge concentration of pottery and animal bones. 52 Annual Report human burial below a living floor level. It was found at a depth of 595cm from the highest point of the mound in the southern side where the trenches were laid out. The pit line of the burial however could not be traced in the limited area of the excavation. The human burial was extended and in supine position (Fig. 2). The feet of the burial were chopped off which reminds of the similar custom in the Deccan Chalcolithic. One pot was placed on the chest of the skeleton. The pot was handmade and ill-baked. Very close to the burial was kept an urn with its mouth covered with a lid. The urn contained the burial of a child. The human skeleton had a copper bi-cone bead around its neck. Apart from these there were no other burial goods offered. The finding of the skeleton stopped the excavation in the trench E-E1 up to the natural soil. Hence the trench C was taken up to the natural soil. The natural soil was yellow-reddish sand. Here the total deposit was 685cm. At the level corresponding to the skeleton was found a dark, black, ashy patch in the trench C which was also seen in trench E just above the skeleton. Fig. 3 : Ceramics from Harirajpur-Banga The ceramics found during the excavation were cord impressed ware, dull red ware, grit tampered red ware, and chocolate slipped red ware, burnished red ware and grey ware. The ceramics show affinity with the pottery found from upper level at the excavation at Golbai-Sasan carried out by B.K. Sinha and later by Deccan College, under the direction R.K. Mohanty. However, the ceramics assemblages at Golbai Sasan in the lowermost level were absolutely handmade which could not be seen at this site. This therefore suggests to date the site a little later than Golbai-Sasan. Apart from ceramics, there were also found adzes and celts made from dolorite. Some adzes found were not grounded and were crude in nature. This suggested their manufacturing close to the site.

53 52 Annual Report The recovery of full adult human burial during Protohistoric period of Odisha was for the first time. At Golbai, a burial of a child was found whose head was missing. However, the recovery of this skeleton at Harirajpur in fact gave an idea about the idea of the life after death and the rituals associated for some individuals of the then people. The people used living areas for disposal of the dead and the feet of the dead were chopped off. However, there might have been other modes of disposal since no other skeletons were encountered during the excavation. A lot of floral and faunal remains were recovered and are under investigation. Dandwate l Exploration in Nanded and Yavatmal Districts : In the year archaeo-logical excavation at Shiur was undertaken jointly by the Department of Archaeology of the Deccan College Post-graduate and Research Institute, Pune, and the Department of Archaeology, Solapur University, under the direction of Dr.P.P.Dandwate of the Deccan College. The site is located on the right bank of river Painganga in Hadgaon Taluka, 75 km north east from Nanded in Nanded district of Maharashtra, Lat. 19 o 40' 46" N, Long. 77 o 27' 39". On the basis of evidences it reveals that there was a settlement in late Satvahana period (2nd Century A.D.) which was continued till 7th-8th Century A.D. Number of early historical objects; aricanut shaped T.C.beads, T.C. bangles & figurines, bangles & beads of shell, beads of semiprecious stones, beads & bangles of glass have been found.

54 Annual Report l It was desire of the excavator to continue the excavation at Shiur in the next session of also, but due to some reasons the excavation could not be undertaken. But an exploration was undertaken by Dr.Dandwate and Dr. Gurudas Shete in February 2013 in Nanded and Yavatmat districts near village Shiur to locate archaeological sites. Total two Early Historic and one late medieval habitation sites found during exploration; Borkhi, Gojegaon and old Marlegaon. Explortion at Loni-Bhpkar: Loni-Bhapkar is located about 70 km South-east of Pune. There is a Siva temple of Yadava period dated to 12th Century C.E. The temple complex comprises one more temple dedicated to Dattatreya and a puskarni.very close to the temple close a habitation mound is located. The mound was explored by Dr. Dandwate and Mr.Gajul in March Surface collection includes the medieval pottery, brick and vitrified brick. On the basis of exploration carried out on the mound, a proposal of excavation has been submitted to ASI by Dr. Dandwate. Excavations: l Excavation at Birjakhedi : Birjakhedi is located in Hoshangabad district of Madhya-Pradesh on the bank of river Narmada. It is a chalcolithic site and excavation was carried out by State Department of Archeology, Government of Madhya-Pradesh in Dr.Dandwate participated in the excavation for about four days. Temple Survey Work: l Rock-cut Caves, Shiur, Revisited : Archaeological excavation carried out at Shiur, district Nanded by Deccan College, in , it is an early historic site. Very close to the site are located rock cut caves. These caves were studied by staff and students during the excavation. There are four caves, all are unfinished. These caves are dedicated to Hinduism depicting images of God & Goddess where Vaishnavism, is dominant. These caves were revisited in along with Dr.Gurudas Shete. l Koppeshwar Temple, Khidrapur. Revisited : It is located 60 km west of Kolhapur. It is one of the best example of bhumija style of temple Architecture. It belongs to Silahara period (11th 12th Cent. AD.) It is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Speciality of the temple is swarg mandap and gajathar. Swarga mandap without roof and is open to sky where asthadikpalas are depicted along with consorts on their vehicles. One of the main features of the temple is Gajathar because all the deities; Shiv, Brahma, Ganesh, Saraswati, Vishnu etc. are shown seated on elephant.

55 54 Annual Report l Siva Temple, Palasdeo- Revisited : It is located on Solapur- Pune National highway No.9 near Indapur in Pune district. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and dated to 12th Cent. A.D. It is also bhumija style temple. The temple is presently sub-merged in Ujani dam on river Bhima. Only amalaka portion on shikara is visible remaining temple is under the water. There is another temple at palasdeo located on the bank of the river Bhima. It is locally known as Surya temple but we observed that it is a Vaishnav temple. The temple is dilapidated condition, super structure is completely collapsed. On the mandovar scenes from Ramayan, other god and goddess are depicted. Study Tours: 1. A study tour of Museology students to Raja Dinkar Kelkar Museum, Pune organize in October Fifteen students participated in the tour. 2. A study tour of Museology students to Mumbai was organized in March, Seventeen students were participated in the tour. Students were taken to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Nehru Science Centre and Elephanta caves. Dr. Shahida Ansari, Mr. B.S.Gajul and Mr. H.S.Bhandare also accompanied. Guided Tour 1. Dandwate, Shahida Ansari and Gajul organized guided tours of museum to students of various schools, colleges and other organizations from Pune, other places in India and also from abroad. The total number of visitors during the year are P.P. Joglekar ARCHAEOZOOLOGY Research and Fieldwork 1. With an invitation from the BHU, Varanasi, faunal material from the site of Pakkakot was examined in August The multi-culture site of Pakkakot (25 46' 13" N; 84 0' 36"E) is located in the ancient bed of river Chhoti Saryu (Tons) in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh. It is situated about 16 km west of the district headquarter on the Ballia-Rasara road. Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology, Banaras Hindu University conducted a limited excavation at Pakkakot in The faunal material collected from field season

56 Annual Report in excavation was examined earlier. A random sample of the faunal material recovered from the multi-culture site of Pakkakot (District Ballia, Uttar Pradesh) was preserved and handed over for examination. The material was studied using standard archaeozoological methods and a protocol established at the Archaeozoology Laboratory, Deccan College, Pune. The study revealed presence of seven domestic species (cattle, buffalo, goat, pig, horse, ass and dog), eight wild mammals (gaur, nilgai, sambar, spotted deer, four-horned antelope, blackbuck, wild pig and wolf), reptiles (Gharial, Indian Sawback turtle Turtle skeletal element from Pakkakot and Ganges Soft Shell Turtle), and a freshwater fish species (rohu). Some of these animal species identified from 2012 material are different than those found in 2011 material. 2. With an invitation from the BHU, Varanasi, faunal material from the site of Bahola Khalsa in Karnal district of Haryana was examined in August The site of Bahola Khalsa in Karnal district of Haryana was first documented by Suraj Bhan (1975: 125). He described it as having Late Harappan and PGW phase occupation. The archaeological site at Bahola Khalsa is relatively small in size. It is readily visible on the flat landscape of Haryana. The site is located in the middle of agricultural fields. Bahola Khalsa was excavated on a small scale by the Dept. of Archaeology of Banaras Hindu University and University of Cambridge in 2012 as a part of the Land, Water and Settlement project (R.N. Singh, personal communication). Two 5 5 m trenches were excavated. The depth of cultural deposit was variable, ranging from 200 to 280 cm, with the natural soil sloping from east to west. The site revealed presence of the Late Harappan, Painted Grey Ware (PGW) and Early Historic occupation. The faunal remains from all the occupation phases were analysed (n=417). The faunal material of the Late Harappan cultural phase revealed presence of domestic cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, dog, wild pig, four-horned antelope and hare, besides a species of bird- Anas crecca (Common teal). A few skeletal elements were modified to make objects such as tools by polishing and cutting with sharp instruments.
