Welcome to Church Membership Aaronic Blessing Liturgy of the Lord s Supper The Apostle s Creed (An Historic Statement of what Christians Believe) I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. Celebration of the Lord s Supper During the serving of communion the band will sing As the deer pants for the water and Thank you for the cross. Please take the opportunity to reflect on the words. You can this information to raymond@fisherwick.net or give it to Raymond at the Sunday Services or at the Church Office. Simply place your gift in these and you can place them into the offering plate over the next two Sundays or post directly to the Church Office. Thank you. PRAYER DIARY At the end of today s service please take this order of service home with you. Through the week, pray for each of the church organisations and through the events listed. Also, pray for those in our congregation family who you know are in need of prayer and each day pray for one of the prayer requests from the Presbyterian Church in Ireland s Mission Ireland and Overseas Prayerline. We especially remember our students who are studying for exams in January. Thank you.
MISSION OVERSEAS From MISSION OVERSEAS PRAYERLINE SPAIN Steve Anderson reports that the council of Torre del Mar Evangelical Church (TDMEC) have found a property to rent which they hope will provide the congregation with a suitable base for services and outreach, (the congregation currently meets in a hotel room on Sunday mornings). They have paid an initial deposit on the property and are hoping to take occupation by the end of January. Pray for the continued negotiation process regarding the rental of the property and give thanks for the Lord s leading in this. Remember TDMEC s Church Council as they meet next Tuesday (13th) to plan for the year ahead. Pray for wisdom, discernment and direction. Pray for the new season of Bible Studies and Sunday Services that they will be centred on Jesus. Pray for wisdom, courage, and the ability to make grace tangible when dealing with local community organisations and individuals. PORTUGAL In December, James and Heather Cochrane invited the members of their English group for a Christmas meal in their home. Sitting around a table and sharing a meal offered a relaxed atmosphere in which to get to know each other better. We took the opportunity to thank the group for their friendship over the past number of months, we very briefly explained the importance of the birth of Jesus as a sign of hope for all of us and we said a very short prayer of thanks for the food and the lives of those gathered. It was encouraging that even such a simple prayer struck a chord with one of those present offering a further opportunity to explain who we are. On the Saturday before Christmas, in an attempt to break the ice with their neighbours, we knocked on the doors of the other eight apartments in our building to wish our neighbours a happy Christmas and offered them home-made edible gifts, as well as Christmas cards. Give thanks for Christmas time and for the opportunities James and Heather had to build on relationships with others. Pray that they will have ongoing opportunities to engage with their neighbours. Give thanks for the encouraging response they have received from the Watch this Space project which will enable them to rent a space in early ROMANIA The Veres family enjoyed a time of rest and relaxation in N. Ireland over Christmas. Csaba and the children have returned safely to work / school in Romania. Ilona is staying in Ireland for the month of January and is engaging in deputation in various congregations.
Give thanks for time of rest Csaba and Ilona had in N Ireland to reflect on their ministries and also for the opportunity to spend time with their home congregation, friends and family before Christmas. Pray for Csaba as he meets with leadership at the Diakonia in early January to discuss setting up the new outreach mission programme of the Reformed church in Cluj. Pray for Ilona undertaking deputation in Ireland in January and that she will have a safe journey back to Romania at the end of the month. DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC of CONGO Maud Kells, a member of Molesworth Presbyterian Church, Cookstown, serving as a missionary with WEC International in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was shot and injured during an attack by bandits in the village of Mulita, in the North East of the country earlier this week. She is currently recovering in hospital. Maud has served as a missionary in DRC since 1968 and was awarded the OBE in the New Year Honours list for her services in DRC. Maud now aged 75, spends around half the year serving in the Congo in medical mission and church work, and the other half at home in Cookstown. Pray that Maud will know the Lord very near to her at this time, and that she will have a full and speedy recovery. KENYA Stephen and Angelina Cowan who serve in the Tuum area of northern Kenya, report that local people are awaiting having access to the mobile telephone network as the new mast gets closer to being finished. Many think this will bring great changes, but the biggest difference will be that Tuum will not be as isolated, as it will have better communication with the rest of Kenya and beyond. Pray for the start of the school year to go well, as teachers are striking. Pray for students as they prepare for Form 1 at Secondary School. Tuum Primary School scored a higher mean score this year, so more boys and girls are eligible to go to secondary school. Continue to pray for the Christian witness in the village of Seren. A young man named Joshua is filling in for Samuel as he sorts some issues at home. Pray for the visit of a team from Shore Street congregation, Donaghadee, as they visit Tuum and spend some days at Seren. MALAWI Volker Glissmann reports that Theological Education by Extension in Malawi (TEEM) are holding an important staff meeting at their office in Zomba from 13th January to 16th January, for all their staff from their three Regional Offices. They need to discuss major changes to the way TEEM promotes and administers their lay training courses. Pray for the preparations for the staff meeting and that it will be led by God. Continue to pray for safety in travel, especially for Lina Glissmann s commute to school in Blantyre.
PAKISTAN Following the attack on the school in Peshawar in December in which 145 people were killed (mostly school children), all schools, colleges and universities in Punjab were ordered by the government to close on 19th December until January 9th, including Forman Christian College in Lahore. Ron and Hilary McCartney returned to the UK shortly before Christmas on home assignment. They will be engaged in deputation as planned from mid-february to late May. Give thanks for Ron and Hilary s safe arrival in the UK and remember them as they begin to prepare for deputation. Pray for the bereaved families in Peshawar and for the people of Pakistan, that, as they wait upon God, their hope will be renewed. Pray for wisdom for the government, the police and the army as they seek to protect the public. Pray for a change of heart by those committed to using violence. Pray for the smooth conduct of the examinations postponed by the early closure of the College. NEPAL Stephen and Laura Coulter, members of Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church in East Belfast, were commissioned for service with United Mission to Nepal (UMN) last Sunday (4th). Following a period of language study and orientation, Laura will be taking up the role of Peace-making and Medication Advisor for UMN, and Stephen will be taking up the role of Mental Health Advisor within UMN and to a wider mental health network. Give thanks for Stephen and Laura s willingness to serve the Lord in Nepal. Pray that they will have a safe and trouble-free journey to Kathmandu. Remember them over the next few weeks, praying that they will settle in well to a new home and life in Nepal. The first draft of Nepal s Constitution is due to be ready by 22nd January If the deadline is missed, there are fears there could be riots and protests in the country. Pray that the political parties will be successful in this task and will agree on the draft peacefully. SAT-7 SAT-7 PARS has been celebrating Christmas for the last month, from 7th December to 7th January, with special live shows on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year s Eve and 6th January (when the Armenian Church celebrates Christmas). The packed festive schedule was designed to compensate for the absence of public Christmas celebrations in Iran. The special live broadcasts featured wellknown Iranian pastors explaining the significance of the Christian festival, times of worship and live music from two popular Iranian musicians, Roozbeh and
Faraz. On Christmas Day itself, viewers were invited to share how they have been blessed in Before Christmas, Nikoo Ordodary, SAT-7 PARS Deputy Executive Director, commented: Many of our viewers are the only believer in their family so won t be able to celebrate Christmas with anyone; they won t even be able to speak to anyone about Christmas. That s where SAT-7 PARS live shows come in; when they watch our programmes, they can share in a collective celebration and that is really special. On 1st January, Smile Magazine, a new programme for 8 to14 year olds, premiered on SAT-7 PARS. It has been developed from the extremely popular Smile programme for younger children. Meanwhile, SAT-7 TÜRK produced a cartoon of the Christmas story for their younger viewers, filmed children from different churches singing Silent Night, and broadcast a large Turkish Christmas gathering. Pray for the refugee children who took part in SAT-7 KIDS' live Christmas broadcasts; that the gifts and attention they received will have revealed something of God s love and care for them. Pray for isolated believers in Iran and Turkey; pray that SAT-7 s Christmas programmes will have brought them joy and encouragement. Pray for the new Smile Magazine show as it launches on 1st January. Give thanks for the popularity of Smile from which it has developed and pray that the Magazine version will prove to be equally engaging. As we enter 2015, pray that the Lord will bless SAT-7 s ministry over the year ahead; pray that He will guide the channel s directors and producers to create programmes that will have an eternal impact.
EVENTS COMMITTEE As most of you know, Fisherwick Church runs and hosts many events during the year. These can be organised by PW, GB/BB, Wednesday Club etc., We also host External Concerts managed by the church office (which involve agreements and help generate income). These will continue and be further developed during the coming year. In addition, we want to build on this existing programme by running a couple of events that will give further opportunity for all ages to build relationships. David McCalmont has agreed to coordinate this committee and we are now looking for those interested in being involved. If you would like to discuss this further and what involvement would be required, please speak to David. All the current events will continue to be managed by the church office and relevant organisations. Kids Club Kids club will be running this summer 17th-21st August Please plan for your children to attend (for all primary aged children) Also, we need people to help with all sorts of tasks, from putting out chairs and filling cups with juice, to being involved in dramas, games and worship. If you want to volunteer please put your name on the sheet at the back of the church or at this stage speak to Michael or Gary for further information
