1 Oak Hill United Methodist Church Where everyone is a minister Our Hebrew Roots Oak Hill UMC s Next Sermon Series The foundation of the Christian faith lies in our Hebrew roots. Jesus was Jewish and his faith heritage is the context in which most of his words and actions take place. The month of September celebrates two Jewish High Holy Days as well as the season of Sukkot. For the next 3 weeks we will delve into the richness of these days. Sunday, September 13th Rosh Hashanah: Jewish New Year Sunday, September 20th Yom Kippur: Day of Atonement Sunday, September 27th Sukkot: Festival of the booths. Remembrance of the 40 years wandering in the desert living in temporary shelters, and the abundance of God. Volume September 4, 2015 Walk A Mile in My Shoes: Poverty Simulation Thousands of our neighbors in Austin struggle to meet basic needs of food, shelter and clothing due to financial insecurities. Living in poverty is a daily concern for nearly two out of five single-parent families and increasing numbers of senior citizens. More than one in four Texas children lack adequate access to food. Jesus calls us to love one another, to serve the poor and needy. What is it like to wonder if there will be enough enough food for the table, enough money for basic needs? You are invited to gain a better understanding of the daily challenges faced by many of our neighbors by participating in the Poverty Simulation. In a single morning you will experience and grow in understanding which will help you dive deeper into the love that Jesus calls us to extend. The Poverty Simulation will be for September 19th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the OHUMC Fellowship Hall. You will have an opportunity to experience the hard choices faced by thousands of your neighbors right here in Austin and learn about opportunities to make a difference. David Dunn is coordinator for the event that is jointly sponsored by Community Ministries, Youth Ministries, and Adult Ministries. For more info or to register, contact David at david77066@ yahoo.com. If you are in need of childcare, please contact Rev. Suzanne Steves at educationdir@ oakhillumc.org. The Cornerstone issue Submission Deadline September 18 August 28 October 2 September 25 Attention, OHUMC Youth! Food, Community and Christ It s almost time for Dinner Groups at OHUMC. If you enjoy food and are interested in joining a group for the upcoming year, come visit our table in the Narthex on Sunday, September 27 or Sunday, October 4 to sign up! Not sure of what Dinner Groups are or do? Well, here s the scoop: 1. Dinner Groups are a group of adults (8-10 people) who meet for dinner. 2. Why? It s a great way to meet new people. So help us by encouraging new visitors to sign up! 3. How many times do they meet? It s up to you, but monthly is the general goal. 4. Where do they meet? In people s homes, restaurants, or wherever else you want to gather. 5. Will it be structured? We will be recruiting Lead Hosts and Hostesses that will start the dinner group and organize scheduled meeting times. 6. If my house is too small to host a gathering can I still participate? Yes, of course! We recommend that you look on Yelp. com to find a restaurant that has a small private room or alcove to gather so that you can hear each other. Look for places that have round tables for a more personal dining experience. Also, consider eating out at less crowded times like 4 p.m. on Sunday. 7. Does it cost a lot of money to do this? Once your group gathers, express your concern about cost. Potluck is fun! And, you can share your favorite recipe. 8. I have more questions; who do I call or ? Pastor Pam will be happy to answer any questions you have! Her contact info is pam@oakhillumc.org and
3 Caring for Those Who Sacrifice for Us to the Family of Christ at Oak Hill! There is a group in our church family who we often forget: the young men and women who are serving in our Armed Forces. Please keep these members and their families in your prayers - Matthew Mohr, Travis Barton, Kenneth McDaniel, John Richardson, Ashley Veek, Alex Gower, J. C. Vernon, Nick Vasquez, and David Arriola. If you know others who should be added to this list, please contact cornerstone@oakhillumc.org. There is another group made up of special women, organized by Sandy Wilkerson, who need your prayers and thanks. They meet weekly to make Hugs a.k.a. neck coolers, among other things, for our military. If you d like to join them, they meet in room 203 of the Adult Education Building at 10 a.m. every Thursday. They are a small group that accomplish BIG things. If you are unable to join them on Thursday, but would like to support the mission by donating things to include in the boxes they send, they would be greatly appreciated. Some of the things most needed are self-care items, such as shaving cream in a tube (NO Aerosol cans allowed), toothpaste, tooth brushes, unscented deodorant, shampoo in trial size plastic bottles (NO big bottles), wet wipes, and white crew or tube socks. Other items our military enjoys are: crossword puzzle books, granola or protein bars, individual powder drink mixes to put in water, and decks of cards. There will be a collection box in the Narthex for these items. Of course, with postal rates so high, the group is always glad to receive money to help cover those costs. Checks made out to Oak Hill UMW (with a note at the bottom that it is for HUGS) can be left in the name tag folder of Sandy Wilkerson. Please do not place these checks in the offering plate. Thank you for your prayers and support! Paul and Geri Mechler joined our congregation by a transfer of membership from Round Rock FUMC on August 23rd. Matthew and Jenny Patterson joined Oak Hill after their daughter Alice Claire Violet Walberg Patterson was baptised during worship on August 23rd. Young at HEART Please join us for food and fellowship on Sept. 10th at 6:30 p.m. We will meet at the Olive Garden at 3940 S. Lamar. RSVP to either Emily Vasquez at or Jan Ramsey at Men s Walk to Emmaus This is a reminder that Men s Walk 1803 will be happening October 1-4, 2015, at CYJ. In order for this Walk to make, we need another 8 to 10 pilgrims by September 16th. If you have any questions, you can contact Lay Director Myles McKemie at Myles@austinemmaus.org.
4 United Methodist Women News Book Club Our September UMW Book Club selection is Torn: Rescuing the Gospel From the Gays-VS.-Christians Debate by Justin Lee. The author describes with great humility his struggle to reconcile his homosexuality with his Christian faith. Our next meeting will be on Thursday morning, September 24th, at 10:00 a.m. at Panera Bread on William Cannon. Please contact Diana Goodloe at or if you have questions. Mary Martha Update The Mary Margaret Circle of the Oak Hill United Methodist Women begins the fall/winter season with a luncheon meeting in the Fellowship Hall Monday September 14th at 11:15 a.m. The hostesses have decided on a pot luck lunch - THIS IS A CHANGE - with the hostesses providing desserts. A $2.00 donation is requested to cover miscellaneous expenses. Sue Sidney will talk to the group about the history of the UMW, as well as current missionary projects. Sue has a long history of being active in UMW from her home church to the conference level. All women of the church are encouraged to attend. Also, you will have the opportunity to welcome Dana Werner as the new Co-chairwoman of Mary Martha as you sign in. Thank you Dana for taking on this job! Rada Sale It s Not Too Early to Think about Christmas The United Methodist Women will be holding a fundraising sale on September 13th in the Narthex between worship services. The products are fantastic and all proceeds support the UMW s mission projects. Think Christmas! Think Missions!

As Methodists we learn that grace is a gift. Even before we recognize its need in our lives, God extends us favor. This nine-week study in the Companions in Christ series explores the Gospel of John and, specifically, how divine grace is at work in our lives today, just as it was in the lives of biblical characters 2000 years ago. Participants in this small-group study will explore the central stories of John, focusing on people who discovered God s grace through their encounters with Jesus. The class will meet on Thursdays, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., beginning September 17th and concluding November 19 in Room A201. Feel free to contact the church office or me with further questions: Steve Reese, (512) , steve.reese@utexas.edu. Interested in a 24-Week, In-Depth Study of the Bible?
