2 perspective Insulation vs. Isolation T rying to outsmart the heat of an Alabama summer, a group of us set out to insulate our local church last week. This building is the oldest standing commercial building in Pleasant Grove and had no insulation in it. With the increasing heat matching only to the energy bill, we decided something had to be done. The assignment that I was handed was that of feeding the hopper. Anyone who has had the privilege of being a hopper-feeder knows what this is all about. It may not be the cleanest job, but it is definitely the coolest. While standing there loading bags of insulation (70 in all), I began to think about this matter of insulating the church. To the drone of the hopper motor, my mind wondered to St. John 17:15, I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. I believe that the desire of the heart of the Master was very clear. Keep them from the world, but let them stay in the world to proclaim the glorious message of salvation and live as an example of the holy life. I fear that instead of the Church being insulated from the elements of the world, many today are trying to isolate it. Segregate it. Detach it. I m reminded of an article that was placed in a denominational paper some time ago that was titled, Cut Them Off. It encouraged the practice that if someone did not believe like you or the beliefs of the church, you should cut them off. Even if they did not agree with you or the beliefs of the church; you should cut them off. If civilization were to adopt this same mentality, the healthy population would not minister to those who are sick. But on the contrary, we take the precautionary measures and do our best to help that one who cannot help themselves. What we find in the High Priestly Prayer in John 17 is a plea for the Father to protect from the evil one and his wicked devices. That is why sanctification of the heart is so important. We are no match for the enemy without a holy heart. There is a great job to do. In verse 21 He prays, That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And again in verse 23, I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. The directive is clear, we must be insulated from the world and its effects, but in order to complete the Master s commission, we can never be isolated from the world. If we, as a body of believers, are to (Continued on page 6) August 2007 Volume IV No. 7 FEATURES DEPARTMENTS Perspective 2 The Keynote Address 3 Friends of Missions 5 Devotions for Plain Folks 7 Truth for Teens 8 Grandma D s Story Time 9 Pilgrimaging 11 EDITOR Stephen R. 3 Keynote Address DOERS OF THE WORD REV. DALE N. HAYFORD GENERAL SUPERINTENDENT But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed (James 1:22-25) T he only way man can know what God wants him to do is by a careful attention to the Word of God. We know Moses gave the law at Sinai, and there was also the ceremonial law so scrupulously practiced by the Jewish nation. Paul referred to the law in Romans 7:9, For I was alive without the law once: but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. James here refers to the "law of liberty" which surely must mean the gospel. The gospel places obligations and also prescribes a way of life. Included in the gospel are rewards for the obedient and punishment for transgressors. Any demand made by the gospel is justified simply because God said it. In addition, this is the only source of true liberty for mankind. always came back to her master. However, on one occasion another eagle flew over and the two did battle in the sky. Fearing they would kill each other, the man flew in his small plane up to the battle sight. He made several sweeps and dives as near the eagles as he dared, intent on distracting them and breaking up the fight. All to no avail. They were so focused on driving each other away from what each considered personal territory that nothing could divert their attention. Such is what James is endeavoring to convey to all those who would be doers of the Word. Focus your attention upon the Word of God with such passion that nothing will be able to distract you from your purpose of knowing the will of God. The gaze looketh and must not only be concentrated, but consistent, if any benefit is to be received. The Greek rendering of the word "looketh" gives an idea how important it is to fix our attention upon the Word of God. It denotes stooping down and looking into with an intense interest. An illustration of this is found in Luke 24:12 where Peter stooped down to look into the empty tomb of the Lord. Another illustration is found in Peter s first epistle where he mentions the angels desiring to look into the activities of the ministers of this gospel as they preached under the Holy Ghost's direction. It is the exact opposite of going away and relaxing the attention. Of course, the result of this kind of regard for God s Word will be a revelation of truth that will have a definite personal application. Revealed truth always has a practical relevance in the life. Some feel that when the preacher talks to them about plain duties he is not preaching the gospel or else he is meddling. Not so! If your understanding of the Christian life does not include the conscientious rule for your life style, I would submit to you that you have not stooped down and gazed into the mirror of God s Word in an undistracted manner. I once read the story of an eagle who had been raised in captivity. The eagle's owner had a permit from the state of California to keep the eagle for the purpose of research. The great bird was released several times but What you see in the mirror of God's law will impose upon you certain restrictions that you would never want to violate. It would be profitable to consider a few of the things that are found in the Word of God that will August 2007 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald 3
4 be disclosed to every sincere soul. Without doubt the Sabbath question will be settled. Acts of mercy are not forbidden on the Lord's day, but, on the contrary, are encouraged as a part of our worship. However, the man who works at secular employment because he is afraid it may cost him his job is not performing an act of mercy. He is merely demonstrating his lack of confidence in God's ability to keep him in what could prove to be a very trying circumstance. The wearing of gold is not a question to be left for the individual, for it is plainly forbidden in the Word of God. Paul the Apostle gave clear requirements concerning long hair on ladies and short hair on men. These are not debatable issues. To the one who conscientiously looks into the law of liberty, the resolve is made to avoid anything that would impair the holiness testimony and influence. It does no good to excuse people's borderline and sometimes even wicked behavior. The fact is these kind have not stooped to behold the law of liberty. The exciting thing about this law is that we are not only made aware of what we are to do, but we find the power to do it. It becomes a matter of nature by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. Obedience is a delight and the natural result of this fixed gaze into divine things. The implanted word carries an enduring kind of authoritative power. One may go through all the forms of religion without spiritual life, but you cannot have spiritual life and not go through the forms. Our activity becomes the very principle of life. James emphatically states that the man who complies with his inspired direction shall be blessed in his deed. This is the greatest reward sought by the possessor of liberty s law. This blessed soul does not have to be pressured to partake in evangelistic and soul winning efforts. It is part of the nature the principle of life. This man does not need public recognition in order to be a doer of the work. I remember as a boy how surprised and pleased my father and mother were when the owner of the company where my father was employed gave him a large bonus check as a reward for labors beyond the ordinary. I was also aware of the fact that this check had no bearing on my father's future behavior. He intended to do his best for the company that employed him because it was a principle of life. How much more the cleansed soul who has become absorbed with the Law Giver to the point that his highest motivation is working for Him, and his pure heart is consumed with the desire to please God. He seeks no higher reward than the Well done of the Master. To the one who has gazed into the law of liberty, there is no blessing comparable to communion with God. This one will see, as he gazes in the mirror, the reflection of the smile on Christ s face. No award could exceed or even equal that. -DNH Dear Brother Hayford, Thank you so much for the opportunity to share what God is doing through Gospel Publishing Mission with your people at the camp in Texas last month. The commitments to prayer and the generous offering are deeply appreciated! May the Lord richly bless you as you labor for the Master. Truly, we are laborers together with Him. Overcoming through Christ, Joe and Gay Taylor Dear Members and Friends of the Pilgrim Nazarene Church, We want to take this opportunity to express our sincere appreciation for the wonderful offering we received during Camp meeting. This truly was a demonstration of the outpouring of prayer and support that has been extended to us. For this we are sincerely grateful. Thank you so much. We also want to thank each individual and each church that has sent cards and offerings directly to us. All the phone calls and s have been an important daily encouragement which we look forward to. Thank you for each one. Rev. & Mrs. Bryan R. Shields & Family 4 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald August 2007
5 The Great Commission FRIENDS OF MISSIONS Dear Friends of Missions, C ampmeeting for 2007 is now history, but the wonderful songs and inspiring messages will stay in our memory and be talked about around our tables for months to come! It was so refreshing to meet two more wonderful men of God, John Parker and Mark Cravens. How God did help them to preach from God's Word in a way that brought conviction to most people there, but at the same time encouragement and a challenge to be at our best for Jesus. We lost so much across the years by not knowing and using wonderful preaches from other denominations! Thank you men for the way that you touched my heart and challenged me to be at my best for Jesus! Much was accomplished in our missions committee meeting and then approved by the General Board. We have stepped out to do much more this year over last year. I am so thankful to a group of men that love missions, and love the people around the world that need to know desperately about the love of God. It seems that God has entrusted the Pilgrim Nazarene Church with the leadership and support of a holiness work in India through a very capable field coordinator in Brother Johnpaul Pinapati. Much is being done there to carry out the Great Commission. I am so thrilled at the way that you people have responded again and again. Thank You from the bottom of my heart! I will list for you the changes that were made in our last General Board meeting on July 14, We raised the pastor's support monthly from $40.00 per month to $50.00 per month for married pastors and $40.00 per month for single pastors. The exciting news is that we have increased the number of mission churches and pastors from 40 last year to 46 at the present with another 5 pastors on probation, seeking to be approved as a pastor for us there in India. I say "Praise God." In less that 10 minutes during the mission service at camp, you people and pastors spoke for 45 of these pastors and families to support for this coming year. I am so proud of you! I will be getting the new pictures and packages to you just as soon as possible. 2. We raised the orphanage budget from $ per month to a maximum cap of $ per month with the goal of finding a larger home to house our children, as well as increasing the number of children that we take care of. Please remember to announce this at the beginning of each first Sunday march offering for the orphans in India. 3. We increased the car expense budget from $ per month to $ Our helping hands department has taken on the responsibility of challenging you people to raise the funds necessary to provide a new P.A. system for every mission church in India. I know that you will come through again as you always have. (continued on next page) REV. STEPHEN E. 6 FRIENDS OF MISSIONS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 5. There are a number of special projects that we will be undertaking with a tour offering this fall, from new tin roofs for the churches to concrete floors. There are special needs at every mission church. I know that we will make a tremendous difference this year. Keep up the good work. 6. Your foreign mission's giving is being used in a wonderful way this fall again, because we are sending a team to hold a special preacher's meeting for all of the pastors. October 8-15 will find Brother Tony Ross and Brother Mike Covington in India holding services twice a day. Please pray for them as they seek passports and visas. I will be setting up a fall tour for foreign missions and will be letting every pastor know as soon as I have it completed. I am looking forward to being in as many of your churches as I possibly can! Again let me say from my heart how much I appreciate all that you are doing to spread the gospel to precious people who need to learn about Jesus Christ! -SER INSULATION VS.. ISOLATIONI CONTINUED FROM PAGE 2 convince the world of the glorious gospel of Jesus and that He came to save to the uttermost, we cannot be tucked away in a shell. When thinking about this, my mind also went to a common problem we sometimes have around Christmas time. I have spent long, fruitless hours searching for that one little bulb in the entire strand of Christmas lights. One break in the wire or one little bulb that has flickered its last and it affects the entire program. I learned a little bit about electricity from my father, who is the best that ever was that s right, father and electrician. A few basic facts about electricity teach that for a current to flow it must have a source of power, a call or demand for power, and a conductor to connect the two. Without the conductor, the source of power is wasted and the call or need for power is helpless. I believe that the Church is the conductor, God is the Power, and the world is the need. If the Church isolates itself from God, it is powerless. If the Church isolates itself from the world, many are lost and God s plan fails. Everyone is aware of the fact that it is a very good thing for wire to be insulated. If you haven t already learned this, no doubt you will sometime very soon. I have seen live wires go up in smoke when they are not insulated properly. Likewise, I have seen professors of Christianity go up in smoke when they were not insulated properly. I feel that is why we can sense the earnest tone in the words of Jesus as He prayed, And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Remember, there is a world that lies helpless and powerless. We as Christians, must connect to the Source of our Salvation and carry it to those who need it. Begin to search you heart today, and ask God to revive you burden for the lost. Keep in mind, that while it is good to be insulated from the world, we will never carry the light of the Blessed Gospel if we are isolated from it. -SRS A VOICE FROM THE PAST C. W. RUTHR GOD S FULLNESS And of His fullness have all we received, and grace for grace. John 1:16 No experience of grace should be regarded as a finality; as though we had received all; rather, every experience should be recognized as a stepping-stone to higher altitudes of grace. Grace prepares us for the reception of more grace. The grace of justification prepares us for the grace of entire sanctification. Entire sanctification prepares us for glorification. No matter what our present experience, there is always more to follow. It is better farther on. He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think. 7 Devotions for Plain Folk Rev. Larry W. Pettit So teach us to number our days that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalm 90:12 H ow fast the time flies where did the day go? The Psalmist was aware of how fast the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, and the months into years. When we are young we have no concept of time. We have nothing to base time on or to measure time by. As we grow older and have some milestones of life, such as a number of birthdays or graduation, we then begin to compare time by length and duration. We begin to realize the speed at which life is traveling. We begin to look ahead to the end and not just see the beginning. That should make a responsible soul to stop and look at life, make some vital realizations and to make some wise adjustment, needed changes, or value the importance of the days that lie before you. Thus the Psalmist sought wisdom, he wanted to make his life count, and he wanted an aim, a goal, a purpose and reason for his existence in life. There are three questions that all are faced with in life; where did I come from? What am I doing here? What will happen when I die? God is the One Who can give us wisdom to face the questions of life and impart an aim, goal, and purpose to life. He also tells us about what happens when life is over. God will reveal Himself to the honest, open, and believing soul. Seeing how fast last year has passed, face this new year with a prayer of faith, believing God, and ask for His forgiveness through the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ. He will make Himself real to your heart pray believing. As He does, life will take on new beginnings and new prospects. God has a purpose for you. He loves you, He wants you to know this and He wants you to seek His wisdom that will help make your life count for His purpose and glory. Face each day of this next year with thanksgiving for another day to live and love the Lord. Make this day count for God and His kingdom; He has promised strength, grace, and His presence, see what you can do together with Him. 8 Truth for teens MAKING A DIFFERENCE REV. TROY TRUITT Sunday School and Youth Evangelism Chairman (573) BY: R : REV.. ROBERTR JONES troytruitt@pilgrimnazarene.org youth@pilgrimnazarene.org F or the church to survive, the church must have revival. We have all heard this statement made many times. Revivals, campmeetings, rallys, times of refreshing have come and gone, and revival is still the cry of many hearts today. Today more than ever God s church needs revival again. We need a fresh outlook, new souls being saved, and a desire for the things of God put upon our hearts and lives. How will this happen? It will happen when God s people began to seek revival with all of their hearts, and when the things of God become important once again. So how does this relate to young people? As a young person what can I do to help my church have revival? Revival is personal in that it is sought individually and won individually which spreads collectively. This is why we have the illustrations of one, two, or Revival is personal, in that it is sought individually and won individually which spreads collectively. three people banding together to pray for revival determined to pray until they saw God move in their midst. Young people can carry the burden for revival. They can make a difference in their local church, and I believe that if the youth in the Pilgrim Nazarene Church would unite in their respective churches; we could see a mighty move of God in our general church. Young people can make a difference. God wants to use you in His cause. He wants to use you to help His cause go forward. So how about it? Are you up to it? Will you accept the challenge, and take up the banner for holiness, and make a difference in you local church for God? 9 Grandma D s Story Time Vacation Bible School P astor Curt s greatest passion was working with the children and youth of his church. He organized a bus ministry and was very faithful picking up several noisy little rascals every Sunday morning. Dwight, one of the children on his bus, was quite a trial to him and his Sunday school teacher. He was hyperactive, rude and pretty mouthy at times. Besides that, he smelled bad. The other kids would move as far away from him as possible on the bus. In Sunday school, Dwight would not sit still, he talked when he was supposed to be listening, he pulled the girls hair and shot spit balls at the boys. His teacher told Pastor Curt she would not teach that class anymore if Dwight continued to attend. However, it was time to organize their annual Vacation Bible School and Pastor Curt was not about to turn away any child that wanted to attend VBS. When the calling team arrived at his home to invite him to VBS, Dwight met them at the door, and it was obvious he did not want them to see inside his house; so they talked to him on the porch. He seemed quite excited about the prospect of attending VBS. When they asked to talk to his mother to get her permission, Dwight told them she was not available. They later learned that she was an alcoholic. Dwight, who was only eleven years old, seemed to be in charge of the household fixing meals for himself and his little sister, doing whatever housework that got done, and getting them ready for Sunday school. Some of the ladies in the church took it upon themselves to take clothing and food to them and try to be of help whenever possible. Dwight was really happy for this, and they slowly began to see a change in his behavior. When the bus picked Dwight and his sister up on the first day of VBS, they were dressed in their new clothes and even smelled better. During the Bible lessons, Dwight was very well behaved, and when his teacher told the story of The Three Lost Items, he listened very attentively. (You boys and girls can read that story for yourself in the 15 th chapter of Luke.) He especially liked the story of the lost lamb. The Holy Spirit, Who is faithful to children as well as adults, showed Dwight that he was like that lost sheep. For the first time in his life, he realized that Jesus loved him and he, in turn, wanted to love Jesus. Sister Anna, his teacher sensed the way God was dealing with Dwight so she asked the children, Do any of you want to ask Jesus, the Good Shepherd to find you if you do, kneel by your chair and we will pray with you. Dwight was quick to kneel, and with the help of Sister Anna, he prayed, telling Jesus he was a sinful boy but wanted to be Jesus boy. He asked Jesus to forgive him and to help him to be a true Christian. Pastor Curt was one happy pastor when he heard of Dwight s conversion. In the years that followed, Dwight was not the only bad boy that Pastor Curt loved and brought to Sunday school on his bus. Also, many of these boys and girls gave their hearts and lives to Jesus and became members of his church. Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. (Matthew 19:14) How about you have you let Jesus find you? 10 The Integrating Power of Holiness J. B. Chapman E. Stanley Jones tells of a Chinese who answered the question, To what religion do you adhere? by saying, Confusion (meaning Confucianism). And Dr. Jones remarks that there are many whose religion could well be described as confusion. Many who strive to serve the Lord Jesus Christ find, like Paul, that they have divided hearts and are unable to choose and do what in their deepest souls they desire to choose and do. When they would do good, evil is present with them; and what they would not do, that they do. There is help in the domination of a noble purpose, but not help enough. Consecration adjusts the will, but there is need of power to purify the affections. Example is insufficient we need power to follow the example. Sin disintegrates, and we need something that will integrate. Sin and carnality divide and defeat. We need something that will unite and give victory. A house divided against itself cannot stand. Although a pagan untouched by the light of dependable revelation, Socrates hungered for integration. At the conclusion of Phaedrus it is recorded that once he went into the temple and offered this p r a y e r : Beloved Pan, and all ye Consecration adjusts the will, but there is need of power to purify the affections. gods who haunt this place, give me beauty in the inward soul, and may the outward and inward man be at one. May I reckon the wise to be wealthy, and may I have such a quantity of gold as none but the temperate can carry. Anything more? That prayer, I think, is enough for me. Justified Christians have prayed, Now rest my long divided heart. Well, the grace of entire sanctification is the answer to the prayer. In this blessing the purpose of the heart is established, and the affections are purified and alienated from sin and the world and exalted to supreme love to God. The outward and inward man are reconciled, and rest of soul is found. The grace of God in full salvation is the best psychiatry (Greek psyche mind, and iatreia healing ) in the world. In scientific medicine, diagnosis is but the beginning. After the disease has been detected, the remedy must be prescribed. If Justified Christians there is no have prayed, Now remedy, the rest my long divided whole purpose of diagnosis heart. Well, the has failed. grace of entire sanctification is the answer What does it matter what is wrong with to the prayer. one s body if there is no cure for the malady? And it is like that in the therapeutics of the soul. It is not enough to ferret out sin and enlarge upon man s unhappy state. The remedy must be prescribed. And thank God, there is a remedy. Cold orthodoxy will not meet the need. Activity of the human powers is not enough. But there is a fullness in the Holy Spirit that meets the full demand in us. There is holiness for the soul, just as there is health for the body. And although the conditions for bodily health may not be possible to all, holiness for the soul is offered on conditions which we all can meet. 10 The Pilgrim Nazarene Herald August 2007
11 PILGRIMAGING WITH Brother Hayford June 16, July 10, 2007 S aturday, June 16, Sister Hayford and I returned home from Kentucky. Sunday I worshiped in our home church and preached in the evening service. After a productive week at home, Sister Hayford and I headed to Kellyville, Oklahoma. I preached there for our newest mission. Brother and Sister Brad Hall have been faithful and their labors are bearing fruit. There were several new people in the service that I had not met. A young lady who was recently saved rendered a special song. In the evening service we were in Guthrie where I preached to a full house. Brother and Sister Bill Thorn s love for souls is so apparent. God is blessing their faithfulness. I used the few days I had in preparing for camp meeting. Friday, June 29, I flew to Boise where my sister and her husband and the three Bork girls met me at the airport. The next day I had the privilege in participating in the wedding of Joshua Davis and his bride, Shanda. God s presence was manifested at the wedding. Sunday morning, July 1, I preached for our Caldwell church. Great food and fellowship were enjoyed at the parsonage after the service. Sister Karen Bork is a wonderful parsonage queen and a great cook. In the evening service, Pastor Rick Bork brought an excellent Bible message on The Remnant. It was good to worship with our Caldwell people. There were more in attendance than when I was there a short time before. I arrived home, Monday, July 2. I spent the remaining days prior to camp in preparation for camp and other catch up work. Sunday, June 8, my soul was fed both morning and evening, and Pastor Melvin Waters opened the Word of God. God s presence was such an encouragement as we worshiped together. God bless you each one. Allow me to challenge all to keep prayed up and maintain the sweetness of the Holy Ghost in your soul.
