the editor s perspective Holiness (4 of 4) We are a Holiness Church, and we are a Holiness People. It has been a standard borne by the holiness crowd down through the years. We believe in a second distinct work of grace known in the scriptures as Christian Perfection, Heart Purity, Sanctification and Holiness. These terms are all synonymous meaning the same experience. Jesus told his disciples to tarry until they were endued with power from on high. This is what they did, and on Pentecost they received the experience Jesus had promised them. It is not just for the disciples of old, but it is meant to be the pattern for every born again believer to follow. We, too, can be made partakers of a holy life. Not just having God look at us through Jesus Christ (as some would have us to believe), but because of His redemptive work of Calvary He imparts the fullness of the Holy Spirit and provides the means for living a holy life. In this final article of a series of four, we see by Holiness we mean as the original Greek signifies, holy (hagios) meaning to be sacred, (physically pure, morally blameless, or religiously/ceremonially consecrated, made holy.) We see by the scripture this experience is required, promised, provided and experienced. Search these scriptures out and study them carefully. Holiness Required 1 Pe t e r 1:15-But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 1 Pe t e r 1:16-because it is written, be ye holy; for I am holy. 1 Th e s s a l o n i a n s 4:7-For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness. He b r e w s 12:14-Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord: 2 Co r i n t h i a n s 7:1-Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Holiness Promised Ep h e s i a n s 1:4-According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Ep h e s i a n s 5:27-That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 1 Pe t e r 2:9-But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him CONTENTS November, 2009 Volume VI No. 10 Perspective 2 From the General Superintendent 3 America s First Thanksgiving 4 Home Missions Report 6 Truth for Teens 8 Story Time 9 Devotions for Plain Folk 10 From My Journal EDITOR Larry W. 3 from the desk of the General Superintendent Rev. Stephen R. Snodgrass Th a n k s g i v i n g... A Good Th i n g It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord, and to sing praises unto Thy name, O most high. Psalm 92:1 James Henry Potts said it best, Gratitude is a becoming trait. It sweetens life, cements bonds of friendship, gives cheer to fellowship, and makes benevolence a joy. Truly, it is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord. It is good for an individual to reflect on the goodness of God in the light of his own limitations. We are living in a society that believes that they can make it on their own. When mentioning one s accomplishments, God is not given credit; and the focus shifts to the individual and away from their Creator. Man-worship is splashed across the pages of this society, and the attention is always away from God. This problem is not a new one. Abraham Lincoln stated, I fear that we have forgotten the gracious Hand which has preserved us in peace, and multiplied, enriched, and strengthened us and have vainly imagined in the deceitfulness of our hearts that all these blessings were produced by some superior wisdom and virtue of our own. Intoxicated with unbroken success, we have become too self-sufficient to feel the necessity of the redeeming and preserving grace, too proud to pray to God who made it. It is time for the church to lead by example in the ministry of thanksgiving. We must remember that without God we are but dust. The churches that we worship in may have been built with our hands, but who gave us the strength to use our hands? The congregations that we worship with every week may have been shepherded by us, but who convicted the heart and drew sinners to repentance? Pastors, never fall into the trap of believing that you built your church and congregation you are nothing without the help of the Almighty! Laymen, do not listen to the enemy when he tells you that without your help and talents the church would crumble. It is time for us to give credit where credit is due. It is He that hath made us and not we ourselves. There is a popular misconception that thanksgiving is an audit or an inventory of our blessings rather than a fundamental attitude toward life. We need to ask ourselves these important questions, Is my very nature one of thankfulness? Am I as thankful in bad times as I am in the good times? When we are truly thankful we do not say, God, I thank you for this blessing or that answer to prayer, but rather, God, I thank you for who you are. We are thankful, because He is a living, understanding, personal God. This means that God knows me, loves me, guides me, and never leaves me alone. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He never changes. He is trustworthy, fulfills His promises and is everlasting in His forgiveness, compassion and love. Thank God for who He is. T. Myers wrote, We ought to be thankful to God for His fatherly goodness. He loves all of His children. Every human being is made in the spiritual image of God and He is as concerned with one child as another. His goodness shows no partiality based on superficial qualities but love each man as though there were no others to love. Thank God for Himself. This is the fundamental attitude and all other thanksgiving grows out of it. We show our gratitude by doing what He has taught us to do, by surrendering ourselves wholly and completely to His way, by telling Him in prayer of our love for Him and by serving those whom the Father loves. Thanksgiving is a position of the heart. As you sit down this year with family and friends, reflect not only on the good things that have come your way, but focus your attention on the God that loves you and makes all things possible. Reflect on His person. Remember His sacrificial love. Thank Him for being Lord in your own life. It is a good thing to give thanks unto the Lord! ~SRS

The Pilgrims and America s First Thanksgiving T he Pilgrims, who celebrated the first Thanksgiving in America, were fleeing religious persecution in their native England. In 1609 a group of Pilgrims left England for the religious freedom in Holland where they lived and prospered. After a few years their children were speaking Dutch and had become attached to the Dutch way of life. This worried the Pilgrims. They considered the Dutch frivolous and their ideas a threat to their children's education and morality. So they decided to leave Holland and travel to the New World. Their trip was financed by a group of English investors, the Merchant Adventurers. It was agreed that the Pilgrims would be given passage and supplies in exchange for their working for their backers for 7 years. On Sept. 6, 1620 the Pilgrims set sail for the New World on a ship called the Mayflower. They sailed from Plymouth, England, and aboard were 44 Pilgrims who called themselves the Saints, and 66 others, whom the Pilgrims called the Strangers. The long trip was cold and damp and took 65 days. Many passengers became sick and one person died by the time land was sighted on November 10th. The long trip led to many disagreements between the Saints and the Strangers. After land was sighted a meeting was held, and an agreement was worked out, called the Mayflower Compact, which guaranteed equality and unified the two groups. They joined together and named themselves the Pilgrims. Although they had first sighted land off Cape Cod, they did not settle until they arrived at Plymouth, which had been named by Captain John Smith in It was there that the Pilgrims decide to settle. Plymouth offered an excellent harbor. A large brook offered a resource for fish. The Pilgrims biggest concern was attack by the local Native American Indians. But the Patuxets were a peaceful group and did not prove to be a threat. The first winter was devastating to the Pilgrims. The cold, snow and sleet was exceptionally heavy, interfering with the workers as they tried to construct their settlement. March brought warmer weather and the health of the Pilgrims improved, but many had died during the long winter. Of the 110 Pilgrims and crew who left England, less that 50 survived the first winter. On March 16, 1621, what was to become an important event took place. An Indian brave walked into the Plymouth settlement. The Pilgrims were frightened until the Indian called out Welcome (in English!). His name was Samoset, and he was an Abnaki Indian. He had learned English from the captains of fishing boats that had sailed off the coast. After staying the night, Samoset left the next day. He soon returned with another Indian named Squanto who spoke better English than Samoset. Squanto told the Pilgrims of his voyages across the ocean and his visits to England and Spain. It was in England where he had learned English. Squanto's importance to the Pilgrims was enormous and it can be said that they would not have survived without his help. It was Squanto who taught the Pilgrims how to tap the maple trees for sap. He taught them which plants were poisonous and which had medicinal powers. He taught them how to plant the Indian corn by heaping the earth into low mounds with several seeds and fish in each mound. The decaying fish fertilized the corn. He also taught them to plant other crops with the corn. The Pilgrims had much to celebrate, they had built homes in the wilderness, they had raised enough crops to keep them alive during the long coming winter, they were at peace with their Indian neighbors. They had beaten the odds and it was time to celebrate. The Pilgrim Governor William Bradford proclaimed a day of thanksgiving to be shared by all the colonists and the neighboring Native Americans. They invited Squanto and the other Indians to join them in their celebration. Their chief, Massasoit, and 90 braves came to the celebration which lasted for 3 days. They played games, ran races, marched and played drums.

The Indians demonstrated their skills with the bow and arrow and the Pilgrims demonstrated their musket skills. The following year the Pilgrims harvest was not as bountiful, as they were still unused to growing the corn. During the year they had also shared their stored food with newcomers, and the Pilgrims ran short of food. The 3rd year brought a spring and summer that was hot and dry with the crops dying in the fields. Governor Bradford ordered a day of fasting and prayer, and it was soon thereafter that the rain came. To celebrate - November 29th of that year was proclaimed a day of thanksgiving. This date is believed to be the real true beginning of the present day Thanksgiving Day. The custom of an annually celebrated thanksgiving, held after the harvest, continued through the years. During the American Revolution (late 1770's) a day of national thanksgiving was suggested by the Continental Congress. In 1817, New York State had adopted Thanksgiving Day as an annual custom. By the middle of the 19th century many other states also celebrated a Thanksgiving Day. In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln appointed a national Day of Thanksgiving. Today we celebrate Thanksgiving by giving thanks for our nation, our heritage and the freedom to worship God. Thank You, God for Your many blessings to us. ~LWP... 6 Le a k e s v i l l e Ho m e Missions Re p o rt Leakesville, Mississippi Mission Roof project Several months ago, it came to our attention that the mission in Leakesville, Mississippi, needed a new roof. The people had the funds available for the job, and I put out a call for laborers for this project. I had several volunteer to come and help, and we set a date to meet and complete the work. Bro. Robert Jones traveled with me prior to the construction date to get a material list and lay out the work. Below is an excerpt from my journal on August 11th, Last Wednesday, I traveled with Bro. Robert Jones, his son Branden and my brother-in-law, Bebo Davis to Leakesville, MS, to roof the Leakesville PNC Mission and parsonage. We arrived around 11:00pm. Bro. Steve Robinson arrived from Shreveport at 3:30am on Thursday. Bro. Troy Truitt, along with Toya Luce, Luke and Travis Truitt and Josh and Ben Boardman arrived about 3:15pm on Thursday. They worked hard into the night and we gathered around Front row: Brandon Jones, Travis Truitt, Luke Truitt Middle Row: Robert Jones, Steve Snodgrass, Steve Robinson Back row: Bebo Davis, Toya Luce, Ben and Josh Boardman, Troy Truitt for prayer before retiring at about 11:00pm on Thursday. We were back on the roof by 6:00am the next morning and the roof was finished by 11:00am on Friday morning. I wish to say a BIG thank you to each one for your hard work and sacrifice last week in Leakesville. It was blistering hot, and I know that each of you sacrificed time and money to come. Friday morning, I reminisced about the heritage of sacrifice that my dear father handed to me. It is by the sacrifice of a few that the lives of many are touched and changed. If it were not for the sacrifice

of those before us, we would not have a pulpit to fill or a church to worship in. We must do our best to be faithful to the trust that has been handed to us through the blood, sweat and even tears of those who had a vision for the church and the glorious gospel. I also want to thank Pastor Kathy Zink and the ladies of the church who set before us wonderful meals and provided enough water and Gatorade to float a battleship. Ya ll did it right! Please continue to pray for the folks there in Leakesville, that God will continue to bless and meet with them. ~SRS Thank You!! We send a gigantic Thank You! to all of you men and boys who sacrificed time and money to come roof our church and parsonage here in Leakesville, MS. All of you worked so quickly and efficiently. Even in the high August heat and humidity, you just drank plenty of cold water, pop or iced tea and kept right on working. Every meal, you all did justice to the plentiful, delicious food our ladies brought in. At nightfall, you brought out the big spotlights and kept the shingles going on. We also thank you, Bro. Steve Robinson, for checking out some plumbing issues for us while you were here. Thank you also, Bro. Steve Snodgrass, for organizing and coordinating this roofing project. We appreciate the special trip you and Bro. Robert Jones made just to get measurements and compile a materials list. May God bless each of you who came and helped us! We will never forget your kindness. ~ Kathy Zink, Pastor Sis. Zink, Mrs. Sharon, Mrs. Linda, Mrs. Hunt, Sis. Hillman

Tr u t h for teens Walk In the Light few days ago I had the privilege to take my son and two of my nephews on a A hunting trip. As we were walking into the woods before the sun came up, it was very dark. The boys were very excited and whispering among themselves, yet I realized that they were noticing how very dark the woods were. There were also lots of strange noises and sometimes crashes in the trees and thickets nearby. As I had already been down that particular path before, I was prepared for the noise and also for the unevenness of the trail. I knew that there were little hills and dips in the path. I knew that there were also places where the grass was long and hung over the path. Knowing that these obstacles were there and that I had three boys following me, I pulled out my flashlight and turned it on to show some light on the pathway. I did not want them to fall or trip over and obstacles in the path and hurt themselves. I found myself shining the light on the trail behind me and on the path right in front of them, just to make sure that they could see. Later, in thinking about the events of the day, and in particular, that trip through the woods in the dark, my mind went to another time and another path. The path of life with all of its pitfalls, dips, mud holes, and sometimes it just seems like it is covered over by all the underbrush. It was like all of those obstacles that the enemy puts in the pathway to try and trip up the weary traveler. It seems that there really may not be a way through, but that is when we find that we are not alone-if we have turned our heart and life over to God. You see, just as I held the light for three boys to keep them from falling, so the Blessed Holy Spirit will do for the child of God who will follow him and obediently walk in the light. You see, the Bible tells us that He has walked this way before us. He knows the way that we take. He knows the dangers that we are going to encounter. He is prepared to help us through them all. He does not want His children to fall and fail. Young people, walk in the light. Do not allow the enemy of your soul to lead you away from the light, and into the darkness. Walk in the light that God is shining on your path. Be obedient to God s will. Allow Him to lead you in your life. Remember Jesus is and always will be the best Friend you will ever have. God bless, Robert Jones Rev. Robert Jones is the pastor of the Pleasant Grove, Alabama, Pilgrim Nazarene Church

God s Ways are ALWAYS Be s t Katrina had the misfortune (or blessing whichever way you wish to look at it) of being the only girl in the family with FIVE brothers. Did you know boys like to tease girls? You say, Grandma D, everyone knows THAT! Well, it was a rainy Saturday in late Fall and the boys were bored stiff with nothing to do or so the saying goes. They thought it would be a great time to harass their dear sister. Let s make a list of things that girls can t do, said Joseph, the oldest son. They all agreed that would be a great thing to do. Here is part of their list: Girls don t 1. Play tackle football; 2. Climb trees; 3. Build tree houses; 4. Play cops n robbers; 5. Shoot BB guns Katrina was playing house with her dolls and trying to ignore the boys teasing, when Mother came into the room. Mother, she asked, could we trade in a couple of boys for sisters? Mother laughingly assured her she did not know of any store where such a transaction could be made. She would just have to tolerate being the only girl in the family. Besides, Mother assured her, there were some things girls could do that boys did not do such as playing with dolls, having tea parties, and doing needle work. God made boys and girls different for a reason. They each have their proper place in God s great and wonderful plan. By now the rain had stopped and the sun was shining brightly. Mother assured them there was one thing both boys and girls could do that was helping her with the yard work. While they were working in the yard, Katrina let out a blood curdling scream SNAKE! Her brothers came to her rescue, killing the varmint. They teasingly asked her what she would do now if they were all girls. Later in the day, Katrina and her mom were baking cookies when the rowdy boys burst into the kitchen. Famished to the point of death! at least this was Jacob s evaluation of his tummy s condition. Mother poured a glass of cold milk for each of them and placed a plate of warm cookies on the table for them. It was Katrina s turn now See bothers, girls do have their place. Who would help Mother make sugar cookies and even do your dirty laundry? So Katrina and her brothers called a truce, realizing each has their place in God s perfect plan. November is the month we celebrate Thanksgiving. My little girlfriends, be THANKFUL God made you just like YOU are. And my little boyfriends, be THANKFUL God made you just like YOU are. God has a special plan in life for each of you one that is just right for YOU! Remember, God s ways are always best! with love, Grandma D Mrs. Dorothy Tiethoff is Grandma D. 10 Rev. Larry W. Pettit O give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever. Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness and for His wonderful works to the children of men. Psalm 107:1 & 21 After the first verse, the Palmist declares four times, Oh that men would praise the Lord, it is almost as though the Lord is trying to get a point across to mankind. God loves to hear the voice of thanksgiving and praise from His children. We have so much to be thankful for and so much to give Him praise over and about. The birds of the air have need of two wings before they are able to become borne aloft into the folds of the invisible air. Too often the child of God tries to live in victory and in a close relationship with the Master using only wing that is made available to him. Using only the wing of prayer leaves us too prone to ask and seek and knock and never give any time or thought or effort to praise. Praise is the other wing that is meant to work in conjunction with the wing of prayer. How long has God been waiting to hear the songs of sweet praise from your lips? To praise takes effort, but oh, the rewards! You will find that God in His glory shall answer even your praise. Is there a hardship, trial, or sorrow of heart? Praise God, He has counted you worthy to bear it. There are lessons to be learned, graces to be exercised and character to be refined in all we face. God uses all things to form and fashion us as vessels fit for the Master s use. Take your stand in the congregation of the strong and praise Him. Tis the true saint of God that finds praise in every situation of life. Spread both of your wings-spread that wing of prayer and pray as you never have before, spread that wing of praise in unison and see that together they will lift you to new heights of unknown close communion and fellowship with the Father and with the Son, Jesus Christ. It is here that a prayer life takes on new depth, it is here the heart truly learns the height of love and the magnitude of His mercy. We have so much to be THANKFUL for. Won t you take some time and express this in real praise to the God of the Heavens above and the keeper of our souls. ~LWP

From my journal... September 14 - October 13 September 14th found Connie and I on the road from Davenport, Iowa, headed home from revival. We were refreshed in the Lord and rejoiced over the good meeting that we had been privileged to be a part of. We arrived home around 6pm and it was good to be with our girls and home again. My mother had moved into our home for the week and stayed with our daughters and they had good time together. Thursday, the 17th, my family traveled with me to Houston, Texas, where I would make application for my visa to India. We stopped for a late dinner, in Westlake, LA, and the Ken Adamsons came and met us. It was good to see them again. They were tired but happy grandparents. We congratulate Kenny Ray and Heather on the birth of Connor. We arrived at our hotel in Houston around 1:00am, and I was back up at 6:00am to go to the airport to pickup Bro. Steve Robinson. We arrived at the visa office a little before they opened, and the Lord helped us to make application quickly and without event. After we made our application, I took Bro. Robinson back to the airport and returned to the hotel to wait for the applications to go through. At 6:00pm I was able to pick up both Bro. Robinson s and my visas. We thank the Lord for His help in making this process go so smooth and quick. Since it was so late, and the Houston rush hour traffic was in full swing, we stayed in Houston for the night. We were able to have some family time, and we had a good evening together. Saturday morning, the 19th, we traveled up to Shreveport, LA, where we were to spend the weekend with the Steve Robinsons. We had a great time in Shreveport. It was good to be among so many old friends and the Lord s presence was in both of the Sunday services. Bro. and Sis. Robinson made my family and I feel right at home, and it was a very relaxing weekend. Monday morning, we were on the road, headed home for a few days. We were able to attend a few nights of revival at our home church in Pleasant Grove, AL, where Bro. Tony Ross was the evangelist. On Wednesday, the 23rd, I had lunch with Bro. Ross, Bro. Harbison and Bro. Jones. We had a great time of fellowship together. I try to take advantage of every opportunity I get to glean from the from wisdom and experience of these men. Saturday, September 26th, my family traveled with me again, to Sherman, Texas, where we were to start revival on Sunday morning. We had a good meeting and enjoyed being in the Taylor s home. They were so gracious and we were able to relax in the country, for a few days. The Lord is helping in Sherman, and I was excited to see new faces in the crowd and people minding God. We thank the Lord for victories won during the meeting. Also while in Sherman, we were able to spend some time with our friends the Chucky Dodds. One day during the meeting I tagged along with Bro. Mike Yancey at his job in Denton, Texas, and we had a great time together. It was good to have the Mike Covingtons, Bob Whatleys, Jim Dunegans and the Todd Gardners as visitors in the meeting. On Saturday, Bro. Taylor and I traveled up to Durant for a church meeting. Please pray for God s guidance as they pray for a pastor. Monday morning, my family and I left the Taylor s home around 4am and made it home around 4:30pm. I was home for one day and then off to Mount Pleasant, Iowa, for a revival meeting with the good people there. We started the revival on Wednesday, the 7th of October, and there was a wonderful spirit of unity throughout the meeting. Thursday, I had an appointment at the Travel Clinic at the University of Iowa, in Iowa City to get my shots for the trip to India. I was glad to get that behind me. I had a great time in Mount Pleasant, and the Wendell Conners were wonderful hosts. Bro. Wendell and I visited with Bro. Orin and Sis. Sally Shaffer who has been moved to an assisted care home. Please continue to pray for Sis. Shaffer who is suffering from cancer. As I left Mount Pleasant Sunday night after the service, I felt that the Lord helped us to encourage the saints and we rejoice over the testimonies of up-to-date victory. I arrived back home on Monday morning, the 12th, and immediately began to repack for a trip we were to take the next day to Jackson, Missouri. My family traveled with me to Jackson, on Tuesday, the 13th, and we arrived just in time for the first service of revival at the church where Bro. Troy Truitt is the pastor. I will share with you the results of that meeting in next month s entry to my journal. May God continue to bless each of you and don t forget that the battle is His!
