3 ST. PETER DAMIAN PAGE 3 Jesus brings the beauty of Hebrew Scripture to perfection in God Some Christians erroneously assume that we do not need the Old Testament. Actually, we need it to understand Jesus. We see that in today s Gospel, Jesus himself uses the Old Testament. St. Augustine wrote, The New Testament lies hidden in the Old, and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (#121), referring to Vatican II s Dei Verbum (#14), teaches, The Old Testament is an indispensable part of Sacred Scripture. Its books are divinely inspired and retain a permanent value. To avoid the idea that the Old Testament is out of date, we can use its other name, Hebrew Scripture. The principle An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth (Ex 21:24, Lev 24:20, Deut 19:21) has much beauty. Many cultures have stories about revenge. For example, there is a Chinese martial arts story that says: since you killed my dad, I will kill your whole family. Given the common practice of revenge, this Hebrew Scripture wisdom limits the revenge: you can t go further than the harm done to you. The underlying value is even more impressive: all people are equally valuable, regardless of rank. The king s eye is no more valuable than a commoner s eye. Once we understand that the law was already fair, we are startled by what Jesus teaches by using examples in people s daily life. Don t practice An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. When people slap you on the right cheek, using the back their right hand, they insult you, but let them slap and hurt you on the other cheek, too. People have two layers of clothes: the tunic inside, and the cloak outside. The latter protects you during cold nights, but Jesus wants us to give it away, too. And so on. Frankly, Jesus teaching is counter-cultural, and not fair. He points to the perfection of divine love that is beyond human rational grasp, So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. It leads to the cross, but only by following Jesus through death that we have life. That is the Paschal mystery. There is no other way for life, but it is beyond our ability. Only the Spirit can lead us that way, but we must first open our heart. 4 ST. POLYCARP PAGE 4 Know Love Serve PSA 2017 We have all received from others the opportunity to know, love, and serve God. We have received the gift of faith from our family, friends, coworkers, or whoever it was that helped us to live our Catholic more. Most importantly, we have received it from the generosity of our God who always seeks to gather more people in faith. This week, we continue with our Pastoral Services Appeal (PSA) message so that we can be help others to know, love and serve God. To pass on what we have received so that the faith continues to grow and we can be a part of something much bigger than ourselves. At all the Masses, we are showing the PSA video that our bishop has made and the video explains a lot about what the PSA and what it does. The video can explain the PSA in ways that words can t because it puts a face on those that we help when we give to support them and their faith. You can see their face and hear their voice. You can feel the impact that we have and their gratitude. As the video shows, there are many different aspects of Catholic life that are supported by the PSA. The video features students of Catholic schools that are supported by the PSA. We listen to them as they explain why Catholic education is important to them. Also featured in the video is Restorative Justice and Detention Ministry that ministers to people who are currently in jail. We see them offer one another the sign of peace at Mass, a peace that only God can bring. Catholic Charities is also featured in the video and it serves the material needs of so many people throughout our diocese. We sense how much it means to people to have their basic needs met through our generosity. Lastly, we see that our parish churches benefit from this campaign. There are many other groups who benefit from the PSA and if you would like to see them all, simply visit Orange- CatholicFoundation.org/psa. There you can find all the information, as well as the video featured at Mass. We know that our goal is to raise $250,000 during the year for the Pastoral Services Appeal. Of that money, $112,000 will go the various projects that the bishop supports through the PSA. As mentioned, our parish will benefit from the PSA by receiving 100% of the funds we raise in addition to the money set aside for the bishop s projects. This means that $133,000 will help make our parish a better place to know, love and serve God, as well as one another. I have gotten some questions about what exactly the money would be used for and I am happy to explain that here. Along with several parishioners, we have identified three priorities. The first is to make our property more secure so that the many children who attend school and faith formation classes here, and all of us, will feel secure when we come here to worship. The second is a priority that the recent rain revealed to us and that is to fix the leaks in our aging buildings. Thankfully, however, our new Parish Center withstood all the rain! Our last priority is to provide air conditioning in the church to make a more comfortable experience in our beautiful church. Paying attention to all the property s needs is important as we want this place to stand for generations as a place where everyone can come to know, love and serve God. 5 SÉPTIMO DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO PAGE 5 Jesús trae la belleza de la escritura hebrea para la perfección en Dios Algunos cristianos asumen erróneamente que ellos no necesitan el viejo testamento, de hecho, lo necesitamos para entender a Jesús. Vimos eso en en el evangelio de hoy, jesus mismo uso el viejo testamento. San Agustín escribió el nuevo testamento se encuentra escondido en el viejo, y el nuevo testamento se desvela en el nuevo. El catecismo de la iglesia catolica (#121),referida al segundo vaticano Dei Verbum (#14), enseña el viejo testamento es una parte indispensable de la sagrada escritura. Sus libros están divinamente inspirados y mantienen un valor permanente para evadir la idea de que el viejo testamento esta fuera de tiempo, nosotros podemos usar su otro nombre, escritura hebrea. El principio ojo por ojo y diente por diente (Ex 21:24, Lev 24:20, Deut 19:21) tiene mucha belleza. Muchas culturas tienen historias acerca de la venganza. Por ejemplo hay una historia de artes marciales chinas que dice: porque mataste a mi padre, yo voy a matar a toda tu familia dando la practica comun de la venganza, la escritura hebrea sabiamente limita la venganza: tu no puedes hacer mas daño del que se te ha hecho. El valor entre líneas es aun mas expresivo: toda la gente vale lo mismo, no importa el titulo. El ojo del rey no vale mas que el ojo de un campesino. Cuando entendemos que la ley ya era justa, nos sorprendemos de lo que Jesús enseña usando ejemplos de la vida diaria de las personas. No practiques el ojo por ojo diente por diente. Cuando la gente te abofetea en la mejilla derecha, deja que te peguen en la otra mejilla también. La gente tiene dos capas de ropa: la túnica de adentro, y el manto de afuera. El manto te protege durante las noches frias, pero Jesús quiere que la demos a alguien. Francamente las enseñanzas de Jesus son contra la cultura y injustas. El nos guía a la perfección del amor divino que es fuera de nuestro entendimiento. "Así que sean perfectos, así como vuestro Padre celestial es perfecto". Nos guía a la cruz, pero solamente si seguimos a Jesus atraves de la muerte tenemos vida. Este es el misterio pascual. No hay otra manera de vida, pero es fuera de nuestra habilidad. Sólo el Espíritu nos puede guiar en esta manera, pero necesitamos abrir nuestros corazones. Conocer Amor Servir - PSA 2017 Todos hemos recibido de otros la oportunidad de conocer, amar y servir a Dios. Hemos recibido el don de la fe de nuestra familia, amigos, compañeros de trabajo o quien sea que le ayudó. Lo más importante, lo hemos recibido de la generosidad de nuestro Dios que siempre busca reunir más personas en la fe. Esta semana, continuamos con nuestro mensaje de la Campaña de Servicios Pastorales (PSA) para que podamos ayudar a otros a conocer, amar y servir a Dios. Transmitir lo que hemos recibido para que la fe siga creciendo y podamos ser parte de algo mucho más grande que nosotros mismos. En todas las misas, estamos mostrando el video de PSA que nuestro obispo ha hecho y el video explica mucho sobre lo que es el PSA y lo que hace. El video puede explicar el PSA de maneras que las palabras no pueden porque pone una cara a los que ayudamos cuando damos para apoyarlos y su fe. Usted puede verles la cara y escuchar su voz. Usted puede sentir el impacto que tenemos y su gratitud. Como muestra el video, hay muchos aspectos diferentes de la vida católica que son apoyados por el PSA. El video presenta a estudiantes de escuelas católicas apoyados por el PSA. Los escuchamos al explicar por qué la educación católica es importante para ellos. También aparece en el video el Ministerio de Justicia y Detención Restaurativa que ministra a personas que están actualmente en la cárcel. Vemos que se ofrecen mutuamente el signo de paz en la misa, una paz que sólo Dios puede traer. Las caridades católicas también se presenta en el vídeo y sirve las necesidades materiales de mucha gente a través de nuestra diócesis. Sentimos cuánto significa que las personas tengan sus necesidades básicas satisfechas a través de nuestra generosidad. Por último, vemos que nuestras iglesias parroquiales se benefician de esta campaña. Hay muchos otros grupos que se benefician del PSA y si desea verlos todos, simplemente visite OrangeCatholicFoundation.org/psa. Allí se puede encontrar toda la información, así como el video presentado en la Misa. Sabemos que nuestra meta es recaudar $250,000 durante el año para la campaña de Servicios Pastorales. 6 PAGE 6 Chúa Nhật Thứ Bảy Quanh Năm ngày 19 tháng Hai năm A Lêvi 19:2 Các ngươi phải thánh thiện, vì Ta, ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của các ngươi, là Đấng Thánh." Chắc có lẽ ai trong chúng ta cũng bị sốc khi nghe người ta nói "Đạo Công Giáo không phải là đạo dạy ăn ngay ở lành." Tôi trước đây là một người theo đạo thờ ông bà và thường đi Chùa để nghe giảng đạo. Từ đó tôi được thấm nhuần đạo Phật là đạo dạy người ta ăn ngay ở lành để được giác ngộ. Sau này khi theo Đạo Công Giáo và gặp lại những người bạn Đạo Phật và tôi nói với họ rằng Đạo Phật cũng giống như Đạo Công Giáo cũng dạy người ta ăn ngay ở lành, cho nên đạo nào cũng tốt. Nhưng sau khi nói như vậy thì tôi giật mình suy nghĩ nếu đạo nào cũng giống đạo nào thì tại sao tôi phải vào Đạo Công Giáo để làm cái gì? Tại sao mỗi Chúa Nhật tôi phải đi lễ? Chẳng những đi lễ, rồi còn tham gia hội đoàn này, hội đoàn kia, làm việc bác ái xã hội, có người còn đi truyền giáo ở những vùng xa xôi hẻo lảnh để rồi cuối cùng phải bỏ mạng. Tôi thiết nghĩ nếu ngày Chúa Nhật tôi không đến nhà thờ thì cũng có ảnh hưởng gì đến việc ăn ngay ở lành đâu. Vậy thì chúng ta phải đặt lại câu hỏi: "Có phải Đạo Công Giáo là đạo dạy người ta ăn ngay ở lành không?" Để trả lời câu hỏi trên, chúng ta hãy cùng nhau suy niệm câu kinh thánh trong sách Lêvi 19:1-2 ĐỨC CHÚA phán với ông Mô-sê rằng: Hãy nói với toàn thể cộng đồng con cái Ít-ra-en và bảo chúng: Các ngươi phải thánh thiện, vì Ta, ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của các ngươi, là Đấng Thánh. Đạo Công Giáo không dạy chúng ta ăn ngay ở lành mà dạy chúng ta Nên Thánh vì Thiên Chúa là Đấng Thánh. Ăn ngay ở lành là xuất phát từ ao ước "Nên Thánh" và đó cũng CÓ THỂ là một cách để nên thánh. Con đường nên thánh của mỗi người, mỗi khác không ai giống ai cả. Đức Hồng Y Nguyễn Văn Thuận có nói trong Sách Đường Hy Vọng rằng muốn trở nên thánh chúng ta phải chu toàn bổn phận của mình để làm theo ý Chúa. Song bổn phận hiện tại không phải là thụ động, nhưng là liên lỉ canh tân, là quyết định chọn hay chối Chúa, là tìm nước Chúa, là tin ở tình yêu vô bờ của Chúa, là hành động với tất cả hăng say, là thể hiện mến Chúa yêu người, ngay trong giây phút này (Trích Đường Hy Vọng 26). Cho nên chúng ta phải tự hỏi: Bổn phận của tôi ngay bây giờ là gì, và tôi cần phải liên lỉ canh tân điều gì hay thay đổi điều gì để trở nên thánh? Một người công nhân ở công sở cần phải canh tân cái gì? Một bà mẹ không đi làm, ở nhà trông con thì cần phải canh tân điều gì? Một em học sinh cần phải canh tân điều gì? Một anh lính trong quân đội cần phải canh tân điều gì? Một phó tế hay linh mục cần phải canh tân điều gì để trở nên thánh? Con đường trở nên thánh không phải là dễ vì muốn trở thành một vị thánh chúng ta phải chết. Chết con người cũ và mặc lấy con người mới trong Chúa Ki tô ngày chúng ta chịu phép rửa. Như Thánh Phaolô nói trong sách Galat 2: 20 Tôi sống, nhưng không còn phải là tôi, mà là Đức Ki-tô sống trong tôi. Chúa Kitô lúc nào cũng sẵn sàng sống trong chúng ta, nhưng chúng ta có sẵn sàng cho phép Chúa sống trong chúng ta không? Có lẽ trong chúng ta không ai có thể dám thốt ra câu nói ấy như thánh Phaolô nhưng ít ra chúng ta có thể nói "tôi cố gắng để Chúa sống trong tôi" bởi vì cuộc sống này ai cũng bị chi phối bởi bốn chữ cơm, áo, gạo, tiền. Cho nên muốn trở nên thánh là phải cố gắng hết mình. Cố gắng liên lỉ để làm tròn bổn phận của một người Công Giáo giữa một xã hội mà dường như con người ta muốn đẩy Thiên Chúa ra ngoài cuộc sống của mình. Ở học đường người ta không dám nói gì đến Thiên Chúa, nơi công sở người ta cũng sợ nói đến Thiên Chúa, dần dần chúng ta đẩy Thiên Chúa ra khỏi cuộc sống của đời này. Khi Thiên Chúa không còn trong đời sống thường ngày của chúng ta thì chúng ta không thể nào làm tròn bổn phận của một người Công Giáo là trở nên thánh. Vì thế hơn bao giờ hết câu kinh mà người Công Giáo chúng ta đọc thường ngày cần được ý thức và áp dụng triệt để. Đó là Cúi xin Chúa sáng soi cho chúng con được biết việc phải làm. Cùng khi làm, xin Chúa cho mỗi kinh, mỗi việc từ khởi sự cho đến hoàn thành điều nhờ bởi ơn Chúa. Amen. Để chu toàn bổn phận của một người Công Giáo, chúng ta cần phải biết kết hiệp với Chúa từng giây, từng phút trong cuộc đời của mình bằng việc xin ơn Chúa để chúng ta biết việc phải làm và ở bên cạnh chúng ta hướng dẫn chúng ta. Nói cách khác, chúng ta có mời Chúa cùng làm việc với chúng ta không? Khi ăn trưa ở công sở, chúng ta có dám cầu nguyện để mời Chúa chúc lành cũng như ăn chung với chúng ta không? Khi đi ngủ, chúng ta có mời Chúa đồng hành với chúng ta không? Vợ chồng có xin Chúa chúc phúc cho tình yêu của mình không? Có người hỏi: Làm thế nào để các vị thánh có can đảm ra pháp trường dõng dạc tuyên xưng đức tin? Xin thưa rằng các thánh phải nhờ đến ơn Chúa mới có can đảm đó. Vì thế chúng ta cũng phải nhờ đến ơn Chúa để trở nên thánh. Chúng ta phải nhờ đến ơn Chúa để chúng ta có thể chu toàn những gì Chúa dạy trong bài Phúc Âm hôm nay: Các con hãy thương thù địch các con, hãy làm lành cho những kẻ ghét các con, và cầu nguyện cho những kẻ bắt bớ và vu khống các con. Và đây chính là một lời thách đố dành cho tất cả chúng ta, và với ơn Chúa chúng ta sẽ làm được bởi vì chúng ta được kêu gọi, Các ngươi phải thánh thiện, vì Ta, ĐỨC CHÚA, Thiên Chúa của các ngươi, là Đấng Thánh" (Lêvi 19:2). QŨI MỤC VỤ - PSA- BIẾT CHÚA YÊU CHÚA PHỤC VỤ Chúng ta nhận được từ mọi người cơ hội Biết Chúa, Yêu Chúa, và Phục Vụ Chúa. Chúng ta nhận được ơn đức tin từ gia đình, bạn bè, đồng nghiệp và bất cứ ai giúp ta sống đức tin Công Giáo. Quan trọng hơn nữa chúng ta nhận được từ Thiên Chúa, Đấng luôn qui tụ nhiều người trong đức tin. Trong tuần này chúng ta tiếp tục tìm hiểu về Quĩ Mục Vụ để giúp nhau biết, yêu, và phục vụ Chúa. Chúng ta truyền lại cho con cháu đức tin để chúng ta trở nên thành phần của một điều lớn hơn chúng ta. Trong các Thánh Lễ, chúng ta sẽ xem cuốn DVD do Đức Giám Mục thực hiện để giải thích những gì Quĩ Mục Vụ đang làm. Cuốn DVD này trình bày những gì lời nói không diễn tả được đối với những người được Quĩ Mục Vụ giúp đỡ. Anh chị em cảm nghiệm tiếng nói tiếng cười và sự ảnh hưởng trong cuộc sống của họ. Có nhiều khía cạnh trong đời sống đạo được sự giúp đỡ của chương trình Quĩ Mục Vụ. Các học sinh nói lên điều quan trọng của nền giáo dục Công Giáo cho các em. DVD cũng chiếu sinh hoạt của những tù nhân. Chúng ta nhìn thấy họ trao cho nhau dấu chỉ hoà bình mà chỉ có Chúa mới ban cho họ được. Chúng ta cũng thấy rằng chính giáo xứ sẽ nhận được phúc lợi của chương trình gây quĩ này. Chúng ta cùng đóng góp cho đích điểm năm nay là $250 ngàn. Từ số tiền này, $112 ngàn sẽ phải gửi lên Toà Giám Mục. Hi vọng giáo xứ sẽ dùng số tiền $133 ngàn cho ba đề án chính: máy lạnh cho nhà thờ, hàng rào bảo đảm an ninh trật tự, và sửa những chỗ dột của nhiều toà nhà của giáo xứ.
