Louisville, KY OCT/NOV 2012 GLEANINGS from Sandra Wayne Sayer, pastor of First UMC Frankfort, was at Resurrection for his first assignment. The following is one of his weekly devotions: One of my favorite Christian authors is Philip Yancey. Among his books that I think would benefit almost all Christians are: The Jesus I Never Knew; What's So Amazing About Grace; The Bible Jesus Read; and Where is God When It Hurts. As these titles suggest, Yancey is a well rounded thinker who has journeyed with Jesus for many years. Yancey has some keen insights on forgiveness, he writes: "When we carry anger and resentment toward someone else, the person we really hurt is ourselves. Not to forgive imprisons me in the past and locks out all potential for change. I thus yield control to another, my enemy, and doom myself to suffer the consequences of the wrong. I once heard an immigrant rabbi make an astonishing statement. 'Before coming to America, I had to forgive Adolf Hitler,' he said. 'I did not want to bring Hitler inside me to my new country.' "We forgive not merely to fulfill some higher law of morality; we do it for ourselves. As Lewis Smedes points out, 'The first and often the only person to be healed by forgiveness is the person who does the forgiveness This is to say that forgiveness is one of the best gifts we can give." Throughout my years in ministry I have seen so many people who need forgiveness. Not to receive it but to give it. Envy, anger, jealousy, hatred, broken families, split Churches, ulcers, and high blood pressure are a result. We need to remember what we say when we say the Lord's : "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." Do we believe this? Do we practice this? These are important questions always for a people who follow Jesus. 2 What s Happening At RUMC? RESURRECTION Kids Discover!! Our children s ministry is getting off to a great start and we are excited. We have all of our series planned through the end of the year. During September we went on adventures with Abraham, Jonah and Paul, and In October we are meeting Old Testament Bible heroes. We are starting with God s unlikely hero Moses; then we re learning about faithful Daniel and obedient Noah. We will end the series by introducing a young and brave David defeating a giant. We are going to count our blessings in November. Please send a family photo (standard 4 x 6) with your young Explorer the second week of November. It doesn t need to be anything fancy. In December we want to bring the Nativity to life for our kids. Each week we will dress up and introduce a different character(s) from the Christmas story. We hope to teach our little ones a Christmas song that they will sing for us one Sunday during the Christmas season. We will begin working on this song with your kids sometime in late October. In addition to our regular Sunday morning class we plan to have a Christmas craft party where the kids can make a gift or ornament and enjoy some refreshments. Moms and Dads are more than welcome to work with their kids on their project. Thanks so much for all of the help, prayers and encouragement. God has great things planned for us! GENNY S PANTRY The shelves are being filled with non perishable food items and diapers for emergency needs of people who are calling for food and supplies. Genny says we still need things like tuna, canned soup, canned meats, etc. Our pantry is a local supply where a one or two day supply of food could be easily given to someone in desperate need when they are unable to get to EACM (Eastern Area Community Mission) for food. We support EACM, too, with various supplies as they alert us to the need. Presently, EACM is in need of diapers, in sizes 1, 2, and 3, and pull ups. WHAT IS A UFO?!?!? In this case, it is not an Unidentified Flying Object! According to the women who meet on Wednesday mornings from 9:30 til Noon thirty and then usually go to lunch, it is UnFINISHED OBJECTS. These UFO s are quilts, sewing projects, crafts, etc. that have been resting in various places and now have been brought out of the closet to become something beautiful and useful. Ask Trish and Margaret working on heirloom quilts, Cathy and Becky doing crafts for gifts, Darlene working on a cross stitch piece, and Genny, using her spiritual gift of baking goodies for the group to enjoy. Better yet, come and see for yourself! Stay for lunch with the girls who are planning on visiting some exotic restaurants. WE RE "STEPPIN' OUT" NOV 10! We are planning a fun night out having dinner on November 10 at Mitchell's Fish Market in the Summit, and we're hoping everyone at Resurrection can come and bring a guest. This dining out experience is to be shared so that others can get to know our Resurrection family. Child care will be provided, if needed. More on it later as it gets closer to time to go. Be thinking about it. Margaret is our coordinator for this event, so make sure you let her know if you re coming and how many people you ll bring! Her number is at home or her cell is AND WELCOME HOME, MARGARET!!

3 REACHING OUT.. WELCOMING NEW RESIDENTS September 30 following the service, we will be taking welcome bags to the new neighbors in the Brookfield Subdivision right across Highway 60. Bags will contain a loaf of bread, a brochure of the church, cards announcing the counseling service and the children s ministry, pieces of candy, and a magnet with Sandra s business card. We have 22 loaves of bread baked, so if each church member takes one bag with the house address already on it and delivers it to the home of this new neighbor, we could contact 22 homes in about 10 minutes after church! Detailed instructions for the faint of heart: 1: Pick up the bag in the gathering space. 2: Ring the doorbell of your assigned house. 3: Hand the bag to the person who opens the door. 4: introduce yourself and say you are from Resurrection and that you are welcoming them to the neighborhood. 5: Say God bless you. 6: Leave with a smile. Now doesn t this sound like Fun?!!! FIFTH SUNDAY EASTWOOD CHURCHES Sept 30, Long Run Park, 4:30pm. Resurrection will be providing the Food: brats, hamburgers, and hotdogs grilled to perfection by Marty and Carl. The rest of us will bring side dishes. The other churches will come as our guests. We ll enjoy corn hole, music, great food, and NO PREACHING!!! Come for the fun and the fellowship!! Bring lawn chairs. REPORTING... FROM THE TRUSTEES: Our trustees have continued their work at RUMC. In the last two months we have applied round up to the parking lot and playground, we have painted the ramp railings, we have removed and trimmed shrubs, and we have set up Carol's counseling office. The metal roof on the sanctuary and annex will be replaced in mid October at a cost of $13,600, plus the cost to replace some rotten wood under the old metal roof. The next major project is to pressure wash the ramp, steps and sidewalks and then apply concrete sealer. Thanks to Bob, Buddy, Becky and also to Dale and Marilyn for all of their help. In Christ, Marty Your Grin for the Day.. An atheist was walking through the woods. Suddenly, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look and saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could along the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing on him. He looked over his shoulder again, and the bear was even closer... and then... He tripped and fell. Rolling over to pick himself up, he found the bear was right on top of him, reaching towards him with its left paw and raising the right paw to strike. At that instant the Atheist cried out, Oh my God! Time Stopped... The bear froze...the forest was silent...a bright light shone upon the man, and a voice came out of the sky: "You deny my existence for all these years, you teach others I don't exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?" The atheist looked directly into the light. "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?".. a pause... "Very well," said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. The bear dropped his right arm... brought both paws together... bowed his head & spoke "Lord, bless this food, which I am about to receive. Amen."

4 Growing Together... We currently have two opportunities for small group participation: WEDNESDAYS at 6:30 We are studying the book of Genesis with Jack Brewer. This is part of the Disciple series and will run through November 14. Popcorn and soft drinks are on the menu, and we have a time of prayer together after the study. You still have time to be part of this enjoyable discussion group! SUNDAY MORNINGS at 9:30 Our Adult Sunday School curriculum for October and November is a DVD driven study by Chip Ingram called True Spirituality: How to be a Romans 12 Christian. In this study, Chip presents a profile of an authentic disciple as described in Romans 12. It isn t about being religious, keeping rules, self actualization, or spiritual formulas for success. It s about taking inventory of our relationships and helping us find Biblical answers to five of the most important questions in life: How do I give God what He wants most? How do I get God s best for my life? How do I come to grips with the REAL me? How do I experience authentic community? How do I overcome the evil aimed at me? JUST A THOUGHT about being blessed... I am blessed to be part of Resurrection and consider that we are all part of this counseling ministry. Like Sandra has been preaching, we are all part of the body of Christ! You have painted walls, moved furniture, hung pictures, bought curtains, brought accessories, and prayed to make this place ready for service. Thank you for all you have done! Being commissioned, again, into this Resurrection counseling ministry is a step of faith for me. I ask you to pray that Jesus will be lifted up and that His heart will be blessed by all that takes place in the room that you have provided for me. I ask you to pray that the Holy Spirit, who is our Counselor, provides help and hope for those who come. Now we entrust it to our Lord Jesus! Love n blessings, Carol SAVE THE DATE! This study serves as a launching pad toward becoming a Christian who lives like Christ. Carl Schumann facilitates the discussions, and they are always lively! The coffee pot is on, and there is room at the table for you!
